Have unique content that is easily shareable, likeable, and uses bulleted or numbered lists. Create How To articles, historical information, reviews, etc. These are awesome for creating editorial reviews and gaining quality backlinks from website within your niche. Search engines LOVE this.

Have diverse backlinks from other related and authority websites that not only point to your homepage, but to your key inner pages as well. This gives your website DEPTH and is a large SEO ranking factor.

Don't BUY backlinks to your website.

This can be a very dangerous practice as you generally don't know the quality of the website your backlink will be placed. You don't want someone linking to your hard work from a spammy website. Google and the other search engines will notice this negative association and likely "devalue" your website because of it. Hang out with the trash and you're liable to get some on you! ;-)

Don't gain backlinks that come from pointless, irrelevant websites. This is a simple time waster.

Don't create link networks on your website. This is easily detected and again will hurt you more than help you.

Remember, 5 good quality links is much better than 100 crappy links.
