As you can see so far, all of these questions that Google has provided for us with websites, has to do with content. Content! Content! Content! There are many reasons why they claim Content is King. Google takes the quality of our content seriously when it comes to rankings.

PRESENTATION & PRODUCTION

  • Is the content free from spelling or stylistic issues?
  • Was the content produced well, or does it seem sloppy or hastily produced?
  • Is the content mass produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
  • Does the content have an excessive amount of ads that distract from or interfere with the main content?
  • Does content display well for mobile devices when displayed on them?

Above we see why it is important that your content is well written as best as you possibly can and that it does not have a lot of advertisements within the content. Google is not talking about ads in your sidebar or footer. All of the above contributes to a good User Experience.

    IS IT COMPARATIVE

    • Does the content provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?
    • Does the content seem to be serving the genuine interests of visitors to the site or does it seem to exist solely by someone attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?

Again the above is about content and the User Experience with that content. All of these questions to consider when creating your content Google is using to determine where you should rank after they perform one of their many Core Ranking Algorithm Updates.

My friend who works for Google told me that the more of these question guidelines you can address positively with your website content, the better off you will be in maintaining your rankings. Typically after a Core Ranking Algorithm Update, your rankings will drop.

If that should happen it is suggested to go back into the content with the problem and update your content to better achieve what these guidelines suggest. Then once you have made updates to your content go into Google Search Console and request reindexing.

I hope I was able to be as clear as possible in my explanation of these guidelines. It took me a while to wrap my own mind around these after my friend explained them to me. So if you have had steady rankings and then a sudden big drop, a Core Update is most likely the cause.

Very informative post, Rob. These guidelines should be followed by us all. Thanks for this timely reminder.
Just one thing, though: If a website's rankings fall, doesn't it follow that another site's ranking will rise?
Maybe these updates are actually helpful to those of us who publish quality, useful articles.

Yes it is possible for websites to rise when others drop and new better website content gets added. If a website post rises then the content is of high enough quality.
