In the case of Wikimedia Commons or even another picture media site like Pixabay, the licensing agreement is normally right under the picture itself. But what would you do if the picture is on a regular website like Wikipedia, a newspaper website or some other kind of website?

In the image above I am selecting another Central Park picture but this one is not on Wikimedia Commons but rather the website of Wikipedia. I then click on the button that says “Visit Page” and the website page will be displayed as seen in the image below.

In this case the picture is right at the top of the page, but many times you will have to scroll through the page to find the picture. When you do find the picture you will want to click on it to bring up the details. In this case the licensing information will not be displayed until you click the “Details” button, as seen in the image below.

Once you click on the details button it will display all of the information you need to give proper attribution. NOTE, not all picture details screens will look the same, so just concentrate on finding the name of the picture, the date it was taken, and the name of the author. Also take note if the license has any additional terms for free use.

WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE ATTRIBUTION

If you have read my other two tutorials on where to find free pictures that do not require attribution, you will know why I prefer using these kinds of pictures. Simply put, there is no need to give attribution for any picture that falls under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) and Public Domain licenses.

I personally do not like having to go through all of the steps to give attribution to an author of a picture. If I can use a totally free without attribution picture, I will because it saves me time. If you have not yet read my tutorials on where to find 100% free pictures see the two links below.

Thank you for this tutorial, Robert. I, like you prefer to use the free images, but it's good to know how to give proper attribution if needed. :)

You are welcome Judy. It is because of the steps needed to use a free picture that requires attribution that makes me want to use the pictures without attribution all the more.

Great post Robert. It seems much easier to use the images that don't require attribution. So do you know what penalties there are for not giving proper attribution? It almost seems like it works on the honor system unless there is someone actually looking for violations.
We appreciate all you do Robert, thanks.

I agree that pictures that fall under the CC0 and PD licenses that do not require attribution are the easiest and safest to use. 98% of the time those are the ones I use.

Though it does seem like attribution is not a big deal unless someone is looking for a violation, you will never know when that violation will be filed against you. It is better to be safe than not giving attribution and having someone sue you if they desire.

Hi Robert... thank you for this tutorial! I always wonder if I'm doing things right when I get to the 'Labelled for Reuse"... Ummm seems like I need to go back to my pictures I've used and check to see if I need to give attribution... great info...!!

You are welcome. I believe many people just think that if pictures fall under the Labeled for Reuse that they can freely use the picture and not give any kind of attribution.

Only CC0 and Public Domain pictures can be used without attribution but you cannot find them on Google without looking at the licensing information first.
