The superlative of attention
Don't stand out.
If everyone turns their attention away from information that is as eye-catching as possible, then it sometimes works better not to be that eye-catching because it is more different.
And deviating attracts.
Our brains are now so used to all those blinking and screaming ads that demand attention. We know that they all don't deliver what they promise. They, therefore, no longer pass our filter. This is called banner blindness.
Advertisements are increasingly presented similarly as an article. And they do not stand out among the regular items. That is why these inconspicuous ads are not filtered out.
The advertisement that is presented and looks like a blog post is not filtered out by the reader and clicked more often than a shimmering, flickering advertisement.
So to get attention you can:
- Stand out
- Deviate
- Responding to the reptile brain
And if all that doesn't work you canalways try to
not to stand out.
With home made gallery ads
I faked a blog post in MSPaint and added it as a gallery in the side wide Footer.
Added an image, faked the text continue reading and posted in.
You can “fake” any advertisement and make it look like a blog post and link it to any page you want.
Newspapers do this all the time, it looks like regular news, but they are advertisements. And if this works for newspapers, it can work for our websites too.
Success with attracting attention!
Yesterday I was on a games website and almost clicked on an ad because it looked so much like the games that were being displayed.
When I'm creating thumbnails for my videos I try to make them look different to everyone else's. It's also called "pattern interrupt".
