This is why you shouldn't give up!

In 1997 Apple nearly went to the wall, precisely 20 years after the company was first started! That is not a typo the company which Steve jobs ran for years very very nearly went bankrupt. It was in that year that Bill Gates invested $150 million to keep Apple alive. At this time, Apple had already created the iPod, the iPhone, and the iMac. It still nearly went to the wall. In practical terms, what Bill Gates did was create a version of Microsoft Office that worked on a Mac. Twenty-one years later, Apple made history by becoming the world's first $1 trillion dollar company.

You may well ask why Bill Gates bailed out Apple? Part of the answer may be that both Microsoft and Apple stole technology from Rank Xerox. Rank Xerox was in the 70s, one of the biggest companies in the world, and it had a budget of over $1 million a year just to innovate. Absolutely groundbreaking innovations were created. Sadly they didn't patent any of them! Had they done so, they would have doubled the value of their company, but they didn't, and they went to the wall. It's one of life's little ironies that about 30 years after Apple's creation, they started actively suing people who steal their technology!

Apple succeeded because they understood that computers in the 70s were just not functional for the average person. Once Steve jobs concentrated on that fact and simplified it, then Apple became Apple rather than its predecessor, which was Apple computers! Apple built its brand by providing value for its customers. They have such a loyal customer base. People either hate Apple or love it; there is no in between.

As far as I can see, there are only three things in the world that create that polarization. Those three things are Apple, India, and Marmite. However, that's an aside. I love two of the three and hate the other. You may assume I love the first two, but you would be wrong it is the 2nd two I love.

I gave up on Apple as a result of user experience. After the Apple4, I decided that Apple wasn't for me, and I would never buy another Apple product again. I have stuck by that, and that puts me firmly in the out of Apple tribes group! As far as Apple are concerned, I am a success. I bought an Apple product and decided I didn't like it, but I did buy it. I am out of their target market forever, so it makes their marketing efforts easier. They are marketing to their tribe

Just because I don't like Apple products, it doesn't mean that I can't applaud the success of the company and how it was built.

IBM and Hewlett-Packard were the main competitors of Apple, and both of them really concentrated on the functionality of computers. Apple focused on the design the colors the appeal and how it could transform lives.

That is what you should be concentrating on with your review sites. Forget the functionality concentrate on the value of the product can give to people and how it can transform lives. Generally, people don't buy because they need something they don't buy a computer because they need more processing power. They don't buy a new television because their old one doesn't work. They buy it because of innovation and how it can change their lives.

Apple's iconic think differently adverts change the way people thought. It concentrated on the fact and the idea and the dream that if you used Apple products, you with the next thing to being a genius. Conversely, if you didn't, you were well behind the lines when brains were given out! Apple people became part of the club or a tribe. You were either with Apple or against it.

Forget the Sausage Emphasize the Sizzle

If you can create this idea in your product reviews, your halfway to success, think about the emotional benefits to your prospective readers; don't think about specifications. Don't be frightened to be innovative and change your articles and reviews as you learn more Don't give up just change the way you are thinking. Grasping marketing ideas is a concept which is quite tricky, but it doesn't mean that you can't master it one chunk at a time.

Yeah, I remember my first Apple Mac in 1984. It was tiny thing. Now I have MacBook Pro. Correct, Steve Jobs never gave up, even in the grave, his company never gave up, thanks to Tim Cook, now Apple still a great marketing tribe. I would never go back to PC again this is where I can agree to disagree with you. To each its own. I remain an Apple fan and chronic user. I have all Apple products in my home.

Giving up is not in my vocabulary.Got heart problems and Im still here. Glad my heart hasn't gave up yet. Hopefully soon I can get with the program and get this heart issues resolved. They do not know what the problem is. This is what making me unable to focus on building my site.

disagreeing Brenda you are totally agree with me that there is an Apple tribe and there is an out of Apple tribe!. I hope you get your health issues sorted you can't do anything without your health

Ok, I guess I will accept you're an out Apple tribe. Smile.

This is a very interesting read. I didnt really know much about Apple's history so I feel enlightened!
I am not an Apple user myself - simply because I can do everything I need with less expensive alternative products.

The last paragraph of your post is Digital Marketing Gold by the way!

Thanks
Dave

thank you, Dave, from you that means a lot

I think Apple mastered creating desirable products for the masses. Beautiful to look at, functional and super easy to use.

Which is the reason why I don't like them. Or I didn't used to. I'm an engineer and I have to tinker with everything I use. If it doesn't allow me to, I don't like it.

That said, as I'm getting older and busier, I'm noticing that I don't have the patience to troubleshoot my stuttering Win 10 table top that I built from scratch. I'm kinda thinking about buying a MacBook that always runs fast and stable.

But then I realize I can get twice the performance for half the price in the Pc world plus all the Macs I've used had very strange interfaces...

Jukka, I am not an engineer in fact I couldn't be further from an engineer and totally left brained but I know where you're coming from on this. A that irritated me but also it irritated me that the products had a built-in obsolescence factor. What pissed me off with the iPhone 4 was the fact you could buy a new battery you had to factor the phone away. That finished me with Apple products forever.I also know where you're coming from with the computer and I have the same reasoning and I keep being told by everybody that MacBook Pro never lets you down. I don't like the interface and marks I've looked at it and thought, really why?
It remains to be seen what will happen in the future I'm always open to change so I may well come round to buying a MacBook Pro in the end, who knows.

Thank you so much for your comments I appreciate them

That's one point I forgot completely. My desktop pc is built from pieces that I've upgraded as necessary. I think my case is about 15 years old but I upgraded the motherboard and cpu a couple years ago and the gpu two years ago. You can't do this with a mac, not even a desktop one. They've also got caught including designed degradation in their product. I'm against overt consumerism and cant really support this.

Very inspiring post Catherine! Thanks for sharing ☺️

All the best,
Melissa

thank you Melissa I hope you found it helpful

What Apple also did well was to create an incredible economic ecosystem where all of their 'toys' play together in one little world of Apple products. It's become a model for other businesses and branding. And don't forget that Apple also fired Jobs at one point!

Evolution...adapt or die! Thanks for sharing this one. Always insightful! Christine

I may be wrong but I think he was fired twice. But as you say adapt or die and they sure are adapted. In fact if you use it as an analogy for evolution then it's better than the finches that Charles Darwin used in the Galapagos Islands!

You are quite right I forgot about the economic ECOsystem, it is genius really an absolute genius.

As always thank you for always stopping by and reading commenting on my articles is very much appreciated. Have a wonderful day
