"Time keeps on ticking, ticking, into the future...." Steve Miller Band

This post is about time, being pulled in too many directions at once, and making reasonable choices.

I don't know about you, but I feel like this guy.

What do I do first?

  • Training?
  • Write another Blog?
  • Address the SWAG tasks?
  • Watch the GoGetters videos?
  • Post on social media?

Real Life

Then there is real life, you know the things that everyone else in your family thinks you should be doing for them, And, you probably should be.

But, there is another blog to write or you forgot to post on Facebook (god forbid!).

Okay, I am going a little overboard to make my point. I've become WA obsessive and this past weekend I brought some rationality to it.

Yup, I confess! I did the unthinkable for a no-days off kind of guy. What you ask?

I didn't touch WA on Easter Sunday except to keep up with emails.

Now I did work on Friday and Saturday. Completed Bootcamp Phase 3 lessons 1-4, caught up on GoGetters videos 19-24, and watched Jay's Friday training video. But nothing yesterday.

Realistic Choices

As many of you who have followed my progress these past 57 days on this blog know, I have a schedule and I'm planning my work and working my plan. In the past 57 days I've posted 19 articles and 13 are ranked on Google.

Two articles were posted last week so they are not ranked yet. The site is ranked. I have a list of another 15 articles to write and much of the keyword research completed. But....

I have to reduce WA time this week. I have other important things I need to do like complete and submit federal taxes. Yes, Uncle Sam needs my attention and I'm even getting a little money back! Yea.

I have another document that needs to go out by Wednesday and it requires very specific formatting and 10 copies in addition to the original. This will take time to complete even though it's 90% written.

If that's not enough I just finished drafting an Onboarding plan I need to email on Wednesday for a Friday job interview.

What To Do?

I've come to a conclusion, I need to use my schedule and sometimes do what makes the most sense to me. Sometimes that is focusing on just site design, sometimes on writing, sometimes it's using the schedule as I created it.

This is not the schedule Kyle gives in the training. As an educator I understand his rationale. Keep moving from one aspect of the site to another adding one more article each time and before you know it you have 20 or 30 or more articles and the site is settling down.

Jay and Bo's schedule recommendations may work for many but not so much for me. If I need to complete a task, I need to complete that task. I can't put the box on the shelf after an hour and leave something up in the air. It will take me more time the next day to figure where I left off. I need to finish it before moving on to my next task.

And, how many of you have started something that should take an hour and then you have a problem with an image you want to use or something else which takes a half hour to fix? I know I have and I stick with it until it's fixed and then go on. Yes it adds time to that item on my list but so what.

Next Steps

The WA community is awesome. I've never seen people help each other as we do here. Thank you all very much.

I remember a lesson from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, every night before going to bed write down the 5 things you must complete tomorrow. If you don't finish the list the next day what ever is left over moves to the top of the list for the next day. It works.

Now, my intention here is to start a conversation that helps everyone.

  • Do I religiously follow my schedule or sometimes raise an item to essential and must finish today status?
  • When is finite time better than finite accomplishments?
  • If productivity is getting something of value completed then when do I sacrifice the list for the task?

This blog was just me working out some feelings for myself. If it helps others, I am glad. If it upsets, I apologize.

Like my site, I'm a work in progress finding my way in this new online world.

Thankfully I have all of you to help me stay on the trail.

To be continued.....

Please send along your comments and suggestions. Your help is always appreciated.

You write exceptionally well. Plus love the ‘persistence of memory’ by Salvador Dali painting. It couldn’t have been described better!

Thank you very much.

Hi Steven

Yes, I absolutely feel like that guy too! Paralyzed by being pulled in too many directions at the same time!

Isn't it crazy how you go to do one "simple little thing" and then it turns into a major thing that takes MUCH longer than expected?

Some days I've felt that I'm going "one step forward, two steps back" - but I try to focus and count only the forward steps! ;-) LOL!

Thanks for this post!
Sharlee (Chocolate IceCream)

Yes, I'm finding a lot of people feel this way. That helps to be honest. And, it is those little things that hang you up and a what you thought was going to 10 minutes turns into 30. So, true.

I'm glad my ranting was received in a positive way by so many readers. Thank you, Sharlee.

You are correct. Any tasks can take longer to complete than anticipated. Who knows what trouble we could run into. And being too meticulous (myself) doesn't help.

I understand your challenges. It is alright to change every now and then to suit your wants and needs.

Keep going, Steven.

Sharon

thanks, Sharon
I am keeping on

Life is a series of adjustments. Those who adjust, but keep moving it forward are the ones that I think will do the best in the end.

It is all a personal choice on what works well for yourself. For me, adjust, but don't give up on the end goal.

same here.
Thanks, steve

Hey, with life happening all around us, since Facebook was added to the Gogetters training, I find I an doubting myself at times and close to being overwhelmed. Like you, that is when I make sure I am following the work schedule. That helps!

I hear you. Thanks for the support. I thought it was just me!
Steve

Yes I feel like stretch Armstrong as well!

I need a more focused plan!

It's all about that old cliche - finding the balance! No one size fits all?

Well done Steven, you do great!

Wayne

Thank you, Wayne. I was concerned that I went a little over the top.
Steve

Yep I feel like that guy too! We have to make it work for us and look after ourselves in the process.

~Mark :)

Thanks, Mark. I agree.
Steve

It's great to see everything your doing, your challenges and your strategy for what works in your situation.

Thanks for sharing that.

Rick

but you said it much nicer than I did.
Thanks, Rick

That was more of a confession of a nearly major blunder.

But thanks anyway.

Rick

Well as a father, I understand that too. But mine is now 22 so a little of the pressure is off but only a little - but I love it!

You are completely right, Steven. You can't always stick to your schedule. The thing is: when you come up with your plan, you can only estimate the time needed for each task and usually you assume that nothing else will come in the way. But you have to make reasonable decisions that are right for the particular circumstances.

Right, Right? But you feel so pressured to do everything. Can drive you crazy. Need to find balance in the process.
Thanks, Sammy
