What are the Laws of Social Media Marketing?

As a Wealthy Affiliate member building our your websites and growing your affiliate marketing business, you will no doubt need to dive into the world of social media marketing. This, for me, was a struggle when I first joined Wealthy Affiliate. When I joined Wealthy Affiliate in April 2015, I had a Twitter account but had not touched it in years. I had not paid much attention to my social media sites at all before joining WA and I had not even heard of Pinterest, but since starting with WA, I have discovered the value of social media marketing. Now I have 10 boards and nearly 200 pins and gaining more followers everyday.

I have outlined some basic laws involving social media that I have learned. Please feel free to add more in the comment area if I neglect any, because I do not profess to an social media expert, but I am learning.

Here are some laws:

1. The Law of Value - If we spend all of our time promoting Wealthy Affiliate and our various niches on social media networks, our followers will become annoyed and stop looking at our content. You need to provide value to your content. Give your followers something that is meaningful and build those relationships.

2. Law of Compounding - When you write high quality content, your followers will share that content with their followers and thus, you get more traffic. So, be sure to not just focus on quantity, but rather quality.

3. Law of Influence - Find online fluencers (if that is a word) within your chosen niche and follow them and learn by their example. See what they are doing and what they are posting and don't be afraid to reach out to them and build relationships and ask questions.

4. Law of Patience - This can be hard one, but remember with building a business, it takes time and lots of patience. It will not happen overnight. The social media world is huge and will take time to get recognized.

5. Law of Focus - This one I know can be debatable and I surely open up any healthy debate on this issue from the rest of the WA community, but yes, being a jack-of-all-trades can be a good thing, but when it comes to branding yourself online, I think it is best to focus on one thing and become really knowledgeable in one thing instead of a mediocre so-so kind of guy in a number of different niches.

6. Law of Quality - I touched on this earlier in this WA blog, but quality is far more important than quantity. Make sure those articles and pages you write have quality over quantity. This helps to build trust from your followers.

I am working on learning more about social media marketing, but it is taking me some time since it is not all that easy. I know that just putting stuff on Facebook is not going to get me conversions, but I am trying to learn.
I picked up a site that has helpful information on social media marketing; now I just have to apply some of the great information.

I'm into all that jazz. Since January 1, I've had 94,000+ viewers of my 43 boards and 662 pins. I also have 2100 followers (all that since May). I get an average of 4000 views on my Google+ page and I don't really know whats going on with Twitter and Facebook, although most of the visitors to my site seem to come from Facebook or Twitter. I need to get those Pinterest and Google+ folks to make the walk over to my site. I think things will begin to work themselves out then.

WOW! I am super impressed with your statistics. 2100 followers and all of them since May. You have inspired me to really start pushing more on Pinterest+. I am guilty of not doing as much as Pinterest as others and I should start paying closer attention to it. Thank you for the inspiration and sharing your experiences.

Also remember I follow 4800, more than twice what I get back. I followed you today.

I had a twitter account which I rarely used and which had a mish-mash of followers and followees. Ten days I overhauled it. I changed the handle and put my website link. I removed random followers and held on to just a handful with whom I had "tweeted". I decided to be ruthless and only follow people who either have a business and/or website in my niche (motorbikes) or are motor bikers (as stated in their profile).

The effect has been amazing. I have had people making direct contact with me. People have given me feedback on my site. One person is sending me free copies of her niche-related books to review - so I get free books and great content and quality outward and inbound links. Some potential sellers have said I could be an affiliate for them eventually. And I only spend about 60 - 90 minutes on Twitter every 3 days.

I have started a Facebook Page - but I don't get along with Facebook. I find Twitter much more intuitive and responsive.

I also love G+ and have a personal and business G+.

PS - I also created a hashtag which is the url of my site. I add it to every tweet, reply and retweet. When people reply to me or re-tweet me (as a surprising number have) my hashtag gets pushed "out there". Apparently, this could be good in the long term ..... oh, and some people who have visited my site via Twitter have signed up to my (as yet) non-existent newsletter). I tweeted them to thank them and explained that it may be a few weeks before the first newsletter is produced. They ALL then replied and said that was cool.

I feel the same way about Facebook. I do not care for FB as much as I do Google+ and Twitter. I have random followers too on my social media platforms and I need to go through and unfollow those too that are not really appropriate. I need to re-vamp those social media sites too. I have made some progress with it but I need to devote more time on it.

This is awesome. These are tips you should blog but in a WA blog. I never thought of creating a hashtag of my URL. That is a great piece of advice. You have some incredible insights that you should share along with the experiences you have. I would love to read a WA blog on your experiences and success story with social media marketing.

I don't have any experience - it was my daughter who explained to me what a hashtag was a few months ago, before I started my website. The idea of creating one of my URL just popped into my head. It costs nothing - and might have some effect in the long term. From what little research I've done I've learned that hashtags are particularly effective on Twitter and G+

I've written a blog to post here on WA. But am limited to one a day for another 2 months. So I'll post it tomorrow;

I am glad you found some real value with this post Rae Anne. I too had not done much with social media marketing until joining WA, so I totally understand what you are saying.

I've heard conflicting opinions since joining WA about whether or not social media actually helps. Your post shows you believe it does. I have a fb and twitter account that I have had for years. Should I start new accounts specifically for WA?

Thank you Alexander and you are right about the idea of sell, sell and sell not being the most effective way to succeed in the world of social media marketing. It takes time and it takes patience and building those relationships is also so important too.
