Defeat, Disgrace, Despair
Defeat - When the battle is lost!
We lost!
That is the ultimate feeling of failure. We are defeated!
In life, we face these scenarios everyday regardless of age.
- A boy lost that little league baseball game
- A girl lost that gymnastics competition
- Students failed their exams
- People losing their jobs
- You did not get that promotion
Defeats are more than just setbacks…
Often, they can be life-changing, making you do a complete 180 ° turnaround and wonder,
“What the heck am I going to do now??”
Including,
- Quitting your favorite sport
- Changing your major in college
- Quit your job when you did not get that promotion
“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.”
Napoleon Hill
Do Not Be Defeated!
- Try again, with a different plan
- Be constructive and learn from this situation
- Find inspiration and support from your community
Just remember, there is NOTHING wrong with YOU. DEFEAT Is NORMAL. Society creates ONE winner in every competition, battle and even the Nobel prize.
We just have to find an endeavor EVERYONE Can WIN!
“Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure. The way you think about a fact may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. You are overcome by the fact because you think you are.”
Norman Vincent Peale
Disgrace - When one becomes the laughingstock!
Defeat can evolve into disgrace and make one the laughingstock.
This will expose one to being shamed by family, friends, school, town and society in general.
Anyone disgraced will be an object of disappointment, often accompanied by rejection and humiliation.
Some consequence of disgrace include
- Exclusion and Isolation
- Oppression
- Limitedness
- Lack of inspiration
“It isn't a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for.”
Benjamin E. Mays, Disturbed about Man
Overcoming Disgrace!
- Untangle what you are feeling
- Unhitch what you do from who you are
- Recognized your triggers
“Looking back, the biggest mistake I made was feeling ashamed of it. Acne is part of life. You do not need be embarrassed of it.”
Cameron Dallas
“It is not a disgrace to fail. Failing is one of the greatest arts in the world.”
Charles Kettering
Despair - When one feels hopeless!
Defeat and disgrace will end up in despair.
The ultimate feeling that nothing matters anymore, only anguish, unhappiness and pain.
There is no hope.
People in despair often feel,
- Hopelessness
- Powerlessnes
- Forsaken
- Alienation
“One of the greatest dangers of great dreams in your youth is waking up to despair as an adult.”
Tice Davids
Conquering Despair
- Stay young, keep dreaming
- Use your talent and skills to help someone
- Try something new or something you have always wanted to do
- Hang out with the cheer squat, like here in WA
“Despair is the price one pays for self awareness. Look deeply into life, and you'll always find despair.”
Irvin D. Yalom
“The road that is built in hope is more pleasant to the traveler than the road built in despair, even though they both lead to the same destination.”
Marion Zimmer Bradley

You can’t feel, if you don’t quit.
If you’re moving forward, and you fall flat on your face, at least you’re moving forward. LOL
That is a good title. It had me from the first moment! Yes, from time to time we feel defeat, disgrace and despair. The thing is not to remain in these state of mind because that is actually what they are! Lift ourselves up and fight on. Food for thought.
