Living in the Philippines - How I'm Able To Survive Financially

For the past year I've been over here in the Philippines with my wife, because her family and friends live here. In fact, I've spent nearly a total of 2 years here in the past 3. Each time I've been here I've just been visiting on a tourist visa which I keep getting extended. I can't legally work here even if I wanted to, so how do I survive financially living in the Philippines?

Through making all my income online.

Working online has no physical boundaries. I don't earn any money from this country, so I'm not breaking the conditions of my visitor visa.

Affiliate Marketing

Running an online affiliate marketing business has played a major role in making this lifestyle possible, and I learnt what I needed to know to achieve that through the training here at Wealthy Affiliate, asking questions of the community, and also doing some further research and learning outside of WA.

Affiliate marketing means I can take my business with me when I travel and earn an income online anywhere I choose to go.

Not everywhere in the Philippines looks like the photos in this post. You have to travel far and wide away from civilisation for the most part to see places like these. But there are certainly some beautiful parts to this country for sure, if you can access them.

Other Things I Do To Earn Money Online

  • Sell eBooks
  • Sell and license music
  • Write content for clients

My point is, if you can make money online through affiliate marketing and/or other sources, you literally can travel to and live anywhere you want.

There's nothing better than that!

It sure is a great place.
Spent the best part of three years living between there and NZ.
When I was living down in the Visayan provinces we had inconsistent internet and constant power outages which made it a bit of a challenge to be on line. Doable....but challenging. Decided to just go diving all day instead....not an overly difficult choice I must say.
Had to make a choice for our little girls future ultimately, so ended up back in NZ.
Go back regular as, like yourself, have family to visit there.
Like you say, working online has no physical boundaries and that in itself is a great motivator.
All the best and enjoy it all.
Steve

Internet drop outs and power outages are still common in most places here. We experienced both just today.

Going diving all day is a great option. Unfortunately where I am at the moment, it's nowhere near any nice diving spots.

These pics sure look nice to me! I spent 6 months on and off with a project I was a consultant for and we stayed in the Shangri-La in Makati (Manila)...

It was lovely, and I was lucky enough to see other places like Cebu, Boracay, etc. too while there between the work periods. I loved iy and swore I would be back...

I am a retiree, so I can get a permanent VISA as such and can start a business, which is our intent. The reason is that labor costs are low, the people trained and skilled, and the weather...

This will give me a reason to go again and again hehe, and of course, we will hire a staff and management that can use Skype so I and the partner can communicate from Germany, Thailand, Dubai, etc.

The pictures show clearly WHY I am interested in this, but there is more....The food, the people, the ambiance in many places there draw us in...

Cheers and thanks for sharing!

Dave : )

Thanks Dave. There are nice places here for sure, and some that are not so great.

You may want to see how this martial law thing pans out for a while first before making any firm decisions. Today it's being said that martial law might be imposed nationwide for a year or more, and what the details of what martial law entails this time around have yet to be released to the public.

In this country, anything can happen.

Yeah, Darren, that worries me...Civil rights go out the window, and there are some vigilantes that can use this as cover for doing bad things (I have been in such situations and it is really dangerous)...Let's see how things develop...Thanks for the heads up!

No Problem. I'll keep you posted. I'm in Mindanao, so I should get the head sup fairly quickly on any new developments...hopefully.

you get the best of both world beautiful surroundings

No, most of this country looks terrible. It's only when you get well away from where any people live that there is nice scenery.

it's a 3rd world country with little industry to speak of, so little money or talent to grow industrially

Awesome! I would like to. Keep your success and be in China as my Wife from china but am not sure if I can do what you are doing and make it happen - live life on term.

You can make it happen. Trust and believe.

Happy for you and hope you can scale your business with time:)

All the best !

I'm working on it. Cheers :)

Yup that's why I like it too. Me being pretty much a man without roots it is the best option for someone who is not a billionaire and owns half of the world anyway.

It's a great option.

Darren, I think you can get a Residence spouse visa which would allow you to stay in Philippines. It's my intention to eventually work on my business full-time in the Philippines too. No hurry for that, but hopefully within the next year or two.

I don't want to stay here though. I just want to get back to Australia soon. There is a lot of paperwork to get the visa you mention, as well as having to leave a hefty amount of US dollars untouched in a Filipino bank account in order to be granted that visa.

Okay I didn't read the replies below :)

Great post .. well done Darren! Cheers, William.

Thanks William :)

Well-said and I agree with you, there is nothing better than the location-independence and financial freedom that working online can offer!
Out of curiosity: do you still need to be on a tourist visa and keep extending it even after you married a Filipino?

Yes. I have to apply to become a resident here if I want to change that status. That's something I don't want to do. I don't want to live here.

Truly, you have a wonderful life. And you have the internet tools and savvy to live life on your own terms. Wishing you continued success. Thank you for the recommendations.

No problem. try to inspire others to go after their dreams. It's not easy, but it can be done.
