Interesting Take On Duplicate Content By Google

Hi everyone!

Thanks to all of you who have wished me a happy birthday today, it has really lifted my spirits!

I was in chat and Leo posted a link on duplicate content in response to a question asked about copying content from one website to another.

The link he posted:

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ca/2008/09/demystifying-duplicate-content-penalty.html

And this is the link I really liked, which the above link also linked to:

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/12/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content.html

This is really informative and I just thought I would share it with you all in my network but is is a bit older. I looked up some more recent info, and you can find that below:

http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-duplicate-content-wont-hurt-you-unless-it-is-spammy-167459

Thanks Leo and thanks to Kathy331 who asked the question, and thanks Dom for pointing out the dates of the first two links, sometimes we miss the simplest stuff.

Happy Birthday, Shawn!

Thanks so much :)

Happy Birthday, Shawn! M

Thanks so much :)

Well done for sharing this, so many people think that they have to publish totally original content all the time its all over the internet and its completly false
Just think how many news sites have the same content and all the information is duplicated
Most of the web is content curation not content creation

Barry

True, but I do bet Google will know where the original was posted and rank accordingly.

On this link:

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ca/2006/12/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content.html

where the paragraph titled "What does Google do about it?" is shown, why does Google in most cases, choose the "less desired" version of a page?

Also, why does Google show the long version of a link rather than the pretty or short link?

That is a good question, and I would have to guess that they will do that as a deterrent from using duplicate content rather than penalize the site rank wise. It does say Google would rather hit you this way then with ranking.

Thank you Shawn and Happy Birthday to you.

Thanks so much :)

Thanks for these Shawn, having read both articles it's still not 100% clear to me what google considers duplicate content and what they do about it, so I just make sure all my content is original. Happy birthday by the way.

Thanks so much. In a nutshell they do not do much if anything at all, and if you keep it original you will be fine :)

Thank you Shawn.
Ken

You bet!

good job. I have two sites That both publish information on computers. Some of the content is duplicated, but now I won't worry about it anymore

is it an exact duplication?

Glad to be of service :)

Ye s ...in some cases, and I am moving all of the window 10d information to the new Site. but wordPress has a built-in facility for moving that content.

ok. so, I guess it's ok. thanks

Thanks, Shawn. I've been wondering about this and I would appreciate your feedback and others on my situation of managing multiple sites.

There are times, for me, when the content can cross over from one site to another. And in those situations, I do not simply paste it. I actually re-work it to be specific to the other site. This is done by adding practical applications and illustrations. For example, if I write something general about life in one site (www.javaforlife.com), I can see how it applies to marriages and relationships. And so, I re-work that content with practical applications towards marriage (www.oppositestyles.com) This re-working obviously adds new material and even changes the wording. And in the end, you have one article that is posted in two places and looking very different.

I hope this is ok.

Yes, I think you will be fine with this.

so, my main concern is about the use of my OWN material in two different places. As I said above, I do re-work it. What you do guys think? Thanks

ok. thanks for the quick response.

I was hoping you'd blog about this Shawn, am glad I asked the question now! Very illuminating, now I can stop fretting about how I do my research, seems I've been doing it right after all. :)

Thanks for reminding me it was you who asked the original question. I thought this was too good of a read not to share.

Definitely Shawn. :)
