Avoiding Mistakes With Your SEO
If you have a website then you already know the importance of traffic. Traffic is to Internet Marketing as location is to real estate. It's the only thing that really matters. If you cannot generate targeted visitors to your site, you will not make any sales or commissions that’s for sure.
The chief ingredient in generating traffic is of course relevant keywords for the search engines. Of course, you can use advertising as a way to generate interest, but it's going to cost you. Using the search engines is the tried and tested way to generate targeted traffic and is the least expensive method.
Unfortunately, many of the WA members who have become website owners for the first time do not understand the importance of search engine visibility, which leads to traffic. As far as I can see they are placing far too much importance on creating a "pretty" website. This in itself is not a bad thing, but it really is secondary to search engine listing and ranking. Hopefully not making any of the following five common mistakes made by many of them will help them get the visitors to their sites if they are ever to make any money from their efforts.
Mistake 1. Not using keywords effectively
This is probably one of the most critical areas of site design. Choose the right keywords and potential customers will find your site. Use the wrong ones and your site will see very little, or no traffic at all.

Mistake 2. Repeating the same keywords
When you use the same keywords over and over again (stacking) the search engines may very well downgrade the page or site or skip it altogether.
Mistake 3. Robbing page content from other websites (Plagiarism)
How many times have you heard or read that "this is the Internet and it's ok" to steal icons and text from websites to use on your site. Don't do it. It’s one thing to learn from others who have been there and another to plain copy their work. The search engines are very smart and usually detect page duplication.
Mistake 4. Keyword stuffing
Like keyword stacking mentioned above, this means to assign multiple keywords to the description of a graphic or layer that appears on your website by using the "alt=" HTML parameter. If the search engines find that this text does not really describe the graphic or layer it will be considered spam.
Mistake 5. Forgetting to check for missing web page elements
Make sure to check every page in your website for things such as missing or broken links, graphics without Alt text (keyword), etc. There are sites on the web that will do this for free - http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/
These are just a few of the methods and techniques that you should be avoiding folks. Do not think for a minute that these methods will work for you because believe me they will do more harm than good.
If you do practice these methods then you will not only spend weeks of wasted effort, your site could end up being banned from the search engines forever.
The solution - Invest a little time to learn the proper techniques for increasing search engine visibility and your traffic will increase, not overnight by any means, but certainly over time.
One thing more thing that you should do - read my extremely helpful blogs lol.
Enjoy your day or evening and if you leave a comment I will reply.

I'm great Robert. And you?
I'm going to try. It's not so bad going back and making adjustments since I have less than 30 posts. Just need to make sure it's as it should be. I'll get there ;-)
Thanks Robert and have a great day!
Liz use that Broken Link Checker. You could be surprised at the little mistakes it will pick up on.
You get stuck using it you get in touch ok.
Robert
It works first time, every time with me Liz.
Some members says it doesn't with their phone though.
Enjoy your Wednesday.

Woohoo! One broken link found and it's not even mine! It's from someone's comment. I can just leave it alone right?
The reason why it wasn't working was because I didn't remove the www. before my website URL. All good!
Thanks Robert ;-)
Hi Liz. I personally remove that link but you can edit it out and keep the comment.
Yes you take out the www and the http as well coz the http is already there at the front of the box.
Sounds like you're a happy bunny lol.
I'm going to sign off soon.

Great stuff here. Will bookmark for sure. SEO is my weak link. But I am not giving up. If I can get a certification in Cisco, I know I can master SEO!
-Kathy
Hello Kathy. Seems you've taken to reading my extremely helpful blogs on a regular basis lol
Long may it continue. Information is power Kathy and the tips and advice I give you now will surely aid you further down the line as you gain experience.
I'm puzzled though. You must live here in the UK but why do you think you need to be a member of CISCO to be an internet marketer.
That's a new one on me!
Enjoy your Tuesday Kathy.
Robert
Hey, Robert!
No, I live in the US. Cisco is a networking (think information technology) standard here. Their basic certification course is a must for all who work on corporate IT networks. It is a grueling course which requires the student know math and logic. None of those is my forte, which made getting a basic certification quite an achievement on my part.
And yes, I do read all of your posts! You seem to have a good grasp on the SEO subject, which is where I am focused at the moment.
Little steps,
Kathy
Hi Kathy. I didn't know about CISCO in the USA.
Over here its to become a paid up member of Trade Unions and you must have this Certificate before employers will hire you.
In other words you have to be a licensed Tradesman/Woman.
Good you're reading my blogs.
You will get there eventually like everything else it takes time.
Enjoy your Wednesday.

Robert once again I appreciate your tutelage. When you speak of keyword stacking, I want to make sure I am not committing that crime. I have my keyword (phrase) in the title of my blog post. I include it again in the first sentence in the post itself. After that I don't use it again. Is this appropriate and do you suggest using any other keywords throughout the post itself?
Hello Greer and thank you for your comment.
No probs with your keywords use.
TITLE
HEADING (part of)
PARAGRAPH (part of sentence)
SUB-HEADING (H2)
It should be in the first paragraph of your article/blog then again in your first sub-heading (H2 Tag) then you can use secondary keywords throughout the body of your page and your main keyword again near the end.
Just make sure its part of a sentence and makes sense then its acceptable. You can also use it as an Alt Tag.
Hope this clarifies it for you.
Enjoy your Tuesday.
Robert
No Probs Greer.
Get it right first time then you don't have to go back over it.
I would use the broken link checker I mentioned in the blog.
Enjoy your Wednesday.
Robert
I certainly intend to follow up and make use of that tool. Thanks once again and enjoy your day.
Hey Robert, the article was very good. I am still trying to get the hang of everything. I have a question. I developed keywords for my blog page but I notice that the other pages also have a short description automatically inserted in the SEO. Should I also go through those and make changes or does that really not matter since it is the post page you want people to go to first?
Hello and thank you for your comment.
If they are two separate articles/blogs it wont matter.
As for your SEO - do you mean PAGES or POSTS - there is a difference in the functionality depending on what theme you are using?
With Pages you don't get an excerpt but you do in Posts and this could contain keywords which is acceptable because its usually the first paragraph that makes up that excerpt.
I'm just about to sign off for the night so maybe catch you tomorrow if you're still stuck.
Robert
