Life is a Bowl of Oats
When I say oats, I mean the porridge. I hate oats. Since my childhood I could not stomach a bowl of oats. I never liked it and I have refused to eat it for more than 30 years. As a young child I had no choice but to eat it, when it was served. I never liked the slimy look and the taste with the milk and sugar.
I CANNOT Eat This
Then something strange happened recently. I visited a friend and she asked me to cook her some oats she bought.
Instructions
1 cup of oats added to 2 to 3 cups of boiling water. I added 2 and a half cups of water and let it only boil for 3 minutes as per the instructions.
I took the pot from the stove top and left it on the side. It was left there for about 45 minutes before my friend ate her oats.
The Outcome
The texture looked different. More firm and not so watery and slimy. I asked her if it was okay and she said she loves it, what did I do?
For the first time in 30 years someone convinced me to have some oats. With doubts I dished a small bowl added only honey, a lot of cinnamon and a small dollop of butter. It was delicious. Needless to say I have eaten a bowl of oats every second morning for breakfast for the last 2 weeks and will continue to do so.
This I CAN Eat
What Happened?
This made me think. What has changed? Why do I love it so much now?
- Less water was used than I can remember as a child.
- The cooking time was reduced from 20 minutes to 3 minutes.
- Instead of eating it immediately, the oats had the chance to absorb all the excess water, which gave it a lovely firm texture.
- I replaced sugar and milk with honey and cinnamon.
Moral of the Story
Sometimes you only have to make small changes in life to change a hopeless situation into a wonderful experience. Be open minded to new possibilities. Even if you just take something and tweak it a little bit to make it better.
My biggest motto in life is: There is a solution for every problem.
This made me realise how true that really is.

I can apply this to my Website, Writing Content and everything else. If there is something you don’t like or that is not working, instead of just starting over with something new, maybe you can just tweak it a little. You will be surprised what results you can achieve.

I think you have eloquently described the fact that a solution to any problem often just requires a different perspective and approach...Good stuff...
I eat oats sparingly too since as a kid my Mom made me eat it every day before school...I also now eat it in different forms and dishes/soups and find it quite tasty...
Cheers!

Thank you Jimmy. I like spaghetti, but for me, it is best if cooked really soft. Should not be chewy at all. Maybe one day you will find your perfect spaghetti dish:)
Love it! The wisdom AND the recipe! :)
Now I can't wait to try butter on my oats, I never have any milk!
This is one of the lovely things about WA, the little extra tips we can pick up from people's blogs! I still have an image of rice with raisins and homemade jam that someone posted recently as a snack from the forest!
I surely needed this one today. I don't ever plan on quitting and agree that there is a solution for every problem. Sometimes that solution is hard to find. Thank goodness for the community here to help on those occasions.
Thank you Rika !
Thanks Mark. And sometimes the solution is right in front of us, we are just looking to hard:)
