Why Do I Talk To Myself Out Loud?
Actually there are a few reasons for why I talk to myself out loud but mainly it's because it helps me stay FOCUSED and keeps me MOTIVATED.
I find that when I have a lot of work to get through and am limited with my time I tend to get rather anxious. No matter how well organised I am or how many 'to do lists' I have written out, I begin to panic and can very easily lose focus (I think it's in my genes)... so here's where the talking begins. I don't talk very loud (or too quiet actually as that can be borderline crazy territory), but just gently talk myself through what I am doing or need to do and before I know it I am calm and focused and breezing through my tasks. It's really quite liberating to motivate yourself through your chores when you are struggling and look back proud at the end product with a smile, knowing you got through it despite your difficulties.
Some other benefits I personally find when talking to myself are:
- It helps me clarify my thoughts as I hear myself speak
- It makes be feel good and gives me a mood boost when motivating myself
- It helps me make difficult decisions when weighing up the pros and cons out loud
- It helps me remember things I feel I may forget
And last but not least...
- It helps lower my stress levels, A LOT.
Does anyone else benefit from talking to yourself?

Yes, I do too! My boss makes me wonder...he mutters quietly or silently to himself. I see his lips moving and he seems very animated...I don't do that, I don't think! He is a wonderful man and boss though!
I think I talk to myself like you do!
Swangirl thats exactly the type of 'talking' i try to avoid as others nearby will most definately think i am losing my marbles.
What helps me is to write out things. Once I have it down on paper, then it is no longer rattling around in my head. And sometimes, I talked things out with my husband. We have used each other as listening posts.
Also, it helps me to WALK things out, if I feel stressed or need to think things out, a good walk helps me sort out my thinking.
Anything to help with de-stressing, staying focused and motivated is a good thing.
So, go ahead and talk to yourself. If you wear a bluetooth ear piece, then you can pretend you are talking to someone on the phone and nowadays, everyone thinks that is normal. :)
I also write a lot Myra and it most definately helps too. But the talking gives a different kind of motivation and focus.
I'll admit to you that I talk to myself, but that's because you raised the subject! Lol !!
I must admit it would probably worry my family if they knew how much I talk to myself but, as you say Nezaket, it helps lower the stress levels, among other things :)
Valerie i think my family would also be quite concerned if they knew the half of it, but as you said whatever helps.
It is a natural communication internalizing mechanism which I have done. If there is a stigma jus keep a brick of a cell phone nearby and pretend to talk into it. LOL
I think a lot of people do but are afraid to admit it. I am no longer ashamed and will happily admit and talk about whatever helps me get through the things i need to do and whatever makes me happy, and this just happens to be one of those things.
Thanks for the comment and the like.

Well hoorah, the word is out now so I can join in. I talk to myself and I talk to my dogs. I sometimes do it out loud but often just a bit under my breath but it helps destress as you said and it helps me brainstorm and put things in order. I do it a lot in the car and I found myself doing it in the grocery store and thought---oo-oo, not good. So now I catch myself in the store-- I hum. It makes me laugh and then people really glance at me funny. Ya, just can't win but this is a crazy world we live in anyway so I figure I will be my own kind of crazy and I love it. Now my kids....that is most likely a different story but .............. €:) s
