I'm way in over my head with my travel site. I've been doing some research and I can't compete with booking.com, expedia etc... Not to mention they pay google billions to keep
Hey, sure, and it's better to change your site to travel info. Just keep the niche small and then gradually expand. You are right. You can't compete against big sites like
Booking
. Provide lots of tips and unknown places to visit:) Why would you change your domain name? If it's related to your niche, you don't need to.
Thank you , I was doubting the name but you and everyone feels like my name is suitable so I'll keep it. I really appreciate your feedback on this.
You can change your site name in Appearance >> Customize >> Site Identity.
Note that's not your website's URL, which is your site's address based on your domain name. If you want to change that, you have to register a new domain name and transfer your site over.
I wouldn't bother as long as your domain name relates to your new niche.
There's no niche "change" required. Just start writing new, relevant articles and acquire new, relevant affiliate vendors.
So changing from booking vacations, which I don't have any of yet, to a travel information blog would be acceptable ? And the name is My Choice Destination. Should I change that ? Not real sure how that sounds as a travel blog.
Yes, it's your website so you can do anything you want.
The name sounds fine to me.
The important thing is to write good travel articles. They are what get indexed and ranked, not the site as a whole (there's really no such thing; it's a collection of pages and posts).
What's the URL? I'd love to take a look.
Go ahead and take that look. I'd love any advice you can give give on this matter. I really appreciate everyone here and how yall have helped me, thank you so much
Hi - you are correct in thinking that you can't compete with the huge travel booking sites.
But that's not really what you should be trying to do.
You are not a travel agent; you are not selling vacations.
You have hit the nail on the head with your idea of having a travel information blog.
You should pick a small aspect of travel that you would enjoy writing about, and write lots of helpful information, answering the questions that people genuinely ask when searching on Google.
By picking a smaller travel niche, you will have less competition and gain trust and authority.
This is how you attract traffic.
And once you start getting traffic, you can join affiliate programs such as Expedia, and recommend their services.
Then, if somebody books through your affiliate links, you earn a commission
So, for example, your niche could be coastal adventures, and you could write about activities on the beach or in the water, and which destinations are the best for snorkelling, or surfing etc.
Awesome ! Thank you ! That's a goal that is more in my reach. I can do that, and I was thinking about incorporating things like' what every traveler should ask before going on their trip .
and about the name its My Choice Destination . Not sure if that name is suitable anymore. What do you think ?
You can. However, keep your travel and add a blog - two birds with one stone.
You can always add a blank page, call it "Blog," attach it to your menu, and then all your posts will be listed under the blog tab.
I am doing the same; however, only just starting.
I want to keep it travel related just not a site with vacations, its just too much. There is getting a agent license, and more. I really don't have the money to fund this. I've done some research and looking at other booking sites , I alone will not be able to keep up with it. So is this possible ? And do I keep the name or chang that too ?
Yes it helps so very much. Thank you again . But not understanding the URL thing. So my domain name is My Choice Destination ? Right ?
I am definitely going to do the merchant rentals, and was also thinking VPN services as well, and anything else that could be a link to what info is being published. This is definitely more at my level.
Thank you and yes it helps. And I've already done the research VPN services are under travel btw. I've seen where other travel sites have this. It's where I got the idea from. I feel like my current theme isn't for a travel blog its for vacations and touring so I feel like changing my theme would be best. I realize it's going to be a little extra work but it;ll be for the best in the end. And what is Twenty Twenty Three ?

How do I back up my site? How do I disable auto updates for wordpress?
Hi Polly, I ask site support to back up my site which you can download to your desktop, instead of installing another plugin. I have always had my plugins set to auto and never had an issue.
A laptop is absolutely fine. You can download and save it to your documents folder or the home screen.
At this point ,not real sure if I want to keep this website. It has been very overwhelming and difficult to say the least. Thinking about changing it if all possible.
I have WordPress and plugins set to auto-update on all my websites. It's one less task to do.
I always have a reliable backup on hand to safeguard against an auto-update going wrong but it's literally never happened.
Well, as I said, with 30 websites it's a big time saver and I've had zero issues over many years (even before joining WA in 2018).
I had all my plugins on auto then this warning was there telling me to backup my site before upgrading any plugin. I had already clicked upgrade for some plugins but this warning came in about the backup and didn't upgrade plugins
I would rather have them on auto, just makes more sense. Just not sure why this warning popped up.
I don't know either, but I'd rather have them in auto. The warning is now gone and I was able to update what I needed.
You need to call upon site support for backups.
All backup plugins have been blacklisted.

Abbie I was just trying to upgrade my plugins. I thought everything was auto backed up, that's why I got confused when this warning popped up.
Oh and by the way, my social media widgets are gone. I did everything exactly what I was instructed to get them for the " Follow " up on my top bar, but they didn't appear. Then the next day there they were and now they're gone .IDK what I'm doing wrong
I did call on support, I had a couple of issues going on, but they fixed it . Thank you for your guidance
Thank you again Abbie. I'm going to do everything you suggest. There is so much to learn. Are all those plugins available here through wordpress ?
WA automatically backs up your site daily. But I do my own backups after significant changes. You might find these useful: Do Your Own Website Backup and Your Website Backup Is Working, but Can You Restore?
I thought it was auto back up, was trying to figure out why that warning popped up, weird. But it's all taken care of. Thank you for your assistance
It's definitely the case that All in One WP Migration is whitelisted on all my WA sites. And, of course, there's no issue on the other platform I'm using as they never blacklisted it
The problem is members who don't use good housekeeping practices. When you create a backup file, it's stored on the server and you then download it to offline storage. But if you don't delete it from the server, they keep building up.
Foe example, I backed up two of my WA sites yesterday. One backup file was just under a gigabyte and the other was just over.
If I didn't delete them from the server, after 20 backups, they'd be occupying 40 gigabytes of WA server space. Multiply that out by a large number of members and you have an unconscionable burden on WA's servers.
But if you delete the backup file as soon as you've downloaded it (or even keep the latest but delete the previous one each time) then it's not an issue.
If you want to create your own backup with something like All in One WP Migration, that is what it will do. Create a backup file. I'm not sure what you're asking.
