What's An Acceptable Bounce Rate?

First of all, we need to define what bounce rate actually is.

As usual, it's Google that controls this.

Under the previous Google Analytics metric UA (Universal Analytics) Bounce Rate was defined as "The percentage of single page sessions in which there was no interaction with the page."

So, if a visitor lands on your page, reviews your content for several minutes, and then leaves, the session counts as a bounce.

However, UA was replaced by GA4 some time ago and the new definition is "The percentage of sessions that were not engaged sessions."

An engaged session is a visit that lasts 10 seconds or longer, has one or more conversion events, or has two or more page views.

So, if a visitor lands on your page, reviews your content for more than 10 seconds, and then leaves, the session does not count as a bounce.

So I'm not over happy with these figures from a fairly new (a few weeks old) site:

These are for the past 30 days.

The bounce rate of 62% is high, but it's useful to compare it with industry standards.

A "good" bounce rate is defined by Semrush as 40% or lower, but the industry average for Blogs is 65% to 90% and for landing pages is 60% to 90%.

It also varies with traffic source, with the highest (worst) bounce rates resulting from display ads and social media and the lowest (best) from email marketing.

Nonetheless, I'm determined to reduce that bounce rate.

My first effort will be to determine the metrics for individual pages and then to modify the page to more closely align to the keyword/search term (i.e., increase the relevance) and to make the headline and image more attractive/dramatic (i.e., increase the stickiness).

I'd be very interested in other members' experience and tips in this area.

I'd say a reasonable bounce rate is under 40% Phil, but... for a new website the rest of the figures here look great!

Nice going my friend and with a few tweaks I am sure that bounce rate will reduce! :-)

Thanks, Nick. Yes, I'm pretty happy with the other figures.

And so you should be Phil!

Have a fantastic weekend my friend! :-)

Over 70 on my mailing list now.

Great going my friend! :-)

100 is my immediate aim.

I'm sure you will pass that very soon Phil! :-)

I see a lot of green on the screenshot, so that’s a good thing I think.

These measurements and statistics are always so strange to me.

What if a bounce rate is high, because they are bouncing from your website from your “Buy Now” Button? 💰💰💰

Thanks, Brad. I've attached the current figures.

The website doesn't have a "Buy Now" button. It's purpose is to add visitors who are interested in my upcoming Happy, Fit and Slim training course to my email list. There are two landing pages, one for visitors to register their interest and one for a free lead magnet. I have 70 people on the list so far.

I'm sure you will improve it, Phil!

Thanks, Jeff. I hope so.

Knowing your tenacity, I am sure that it will, Phil!

Jeff

I think it's rather interesting, Phil. Great information.

Thanks, Myra. I'm working through it.

This is some excellent information. I look forward to reading more information about this.

It will be interesting to see what others come up with.
