Sell Your Online Business for a Lump Sum

Although a substantial income should be the aim for all of us, you can also create online businesses that you can sell for a lump sum.

Decide on a niche that can be monetized through both affiliate links and (optionally) e-commerce.

Register a relevant dot com domain name through Wealthy Affiliate at Websites >> Site Domains. This will automatically point the domain to Wealthy Affiliate’s Domain Name Servers.

Build a WordPress website on Wealthy Affiliate using Websites >> Build a Website >> On a Domain I Own.

Add the website to Google Analytics. See:

GA Part 1, GA Part 2 and GA Part 3.

Register the site with Google Search Console. See GSC the Easy Way.

And with Bing Webmaster Tools. See BWT the Easy Way.

Useful Plugins

Install the plugins

  • Pretty Links
  • Simple Scroll to Top Button
  • Antispam Bee
  • WP Legal Eagle
  • WooCommerce (optional; install only if you want an e-commerce, as well as an affiliate marketing site)
    • Facebook for WooCommerce
    • WooCommerce PayPal Checkout
    • WooCommerce Shipping and Tax
    • WooCommerce Stripe Gateway

Create the Pages and Menus

Create Contact and About pages.

Create Home and Blog pages. Your Home page should tell your readers what your site is all about and, most importantly, how it will benefit THEM.

Set Home page to static in Settings >> Reading.

Create Footer pages using WP Legal Eagle.

Create Header and Footer menus. The Header menu contains Home, Blog, Products, Categories, Free Stuff, Contact and About. The Footer menu contains the legal pages generated by WP Legal Eagle.

Start Writing Blogs

Write one informative blog post and schedule five more. Apply appropriate categories (don’t just leave it at the default Uncategorized) and Tags.

As each blog post is published, submit it to GSC and Bing Webmaster Tools for indexing and request comments from other Wealthy Affiliate members.

Get Affiliate Links

Apply to vendors in your niche who have affiliate programs. Possible sources include

  • ClickBank
  • CJ (Commission Junction)
  • JVZoo
  • Warrior +
  • Google [niche] affiliate to find individual vendors
  • Amazon Associates

When you’re accepted as an affiliate, copy and store the affiliate link somewhere you can easily retrieve it from.

(In the case of Amazon, it’s an individual affiliate link for each product. You get it by finding an Amazon product you want to promote and then getting the link from the SiteStripe bar).

Create Landing Pages

See Don't Overcomplicate Landing Pages.

Create a landing page for each product you wish to promote, pre-selling the product and including the affiliate link. Add the landing pages as sub-menu items to the menu item Products.

Find keywords that people are using to find either the reward a particular product promises or the pain point it relieves. Write blog posts addressing such keywords and include one or two links to the related landing page. Alternate these promotional blog posts with purely informational ones and aim for three a week.

WooCommerce

Optionally (if you’ve elected to go the e-commerce route as well), add products to WooCommerce.

There are a few guidelines to follow:

  1. It’s best not to mix Amazon affiliate products with other products. This is because Amazon requires you to place an affiliate disclosure on that page. So it’s best to keep the page just for Amazon products.
  2. To avoid confusing your customers and to give them a wide choice, group your products by category, with different products in the same category offering different features at different price points.
  3. Create a menu structure that makes it easy for your customers to find what they are looking for.
  4. Never stock inventory. Use dropshipping for physical products and source locally rather than from overseas suppliers.

Use Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console to queue pages and articles for indexing.

Get Your Visitors to Opt-in

Create a giveaway related to your niche and an opt-in form connected to an autoresponder such as AWeber, GetResponse or ActiveCampaign. Use it to build your email list. As well as having good prospects to market to, an email list is a real asset that enhances the value of your business.

One of the easiest ways to create a giveaway is to buy high-quality, relevant PLR and rewrite it to your own personal style, create a new cover and claim authorship.

Put your opt-in form on your home page in a right-hand sidebar and include it under the Free Stuff menu item in your Header menu.

Value Your Site

Get the site to $100 a week in profit = $433 a month = $5,200 a year and list for sale at $15,000 with Store Coach or Flippa.

Incentives

Sell 2 sites and buy a car

Sell another 8 sites and fund the deposit on a house.

Of course, you could do a lot better and get there a lot sooner.

Thank you. I've had in mind for many years the idea of flipping sites so enjoyed your breakdown thoroughly. I'm also glad someone asked how long it takes for 100.00 a week to which you guesstimated in the hundreds of posts.

I need to get my first site growing and learn what actually works for me, but i plan on keeping my first site. But after that would love to build and flip and use the money from each flip to improve on that dynamic.

My eyes light up when I see you've posted again.

Regards,

Jason

Very nice of you to say so, Jason. Makes it all worthwhile.

I will be linking anyone who asks me when I tell them to flip sites to come here as well, Phil.
,
The time for me to buy a car is around the corner - well, time to consider the options on who wants to buy at least two of my sites

Excellent blueprint

Thanks, Chris. Good luck with it all.

2

Thanks. I intend to grow them to at least a minimum monthly traffic and earnings before selling

2

That's the best way to maximize your return, Chris.

Hi - excellent advice as always!

I plan on selling two sites later this year and will be using Motion Invest to facilitate the sales.

However, they do require that 50% of the traffic be from the US, and one of my sites doesn't have that, but I'm working on it!

Thanks, Diane. Useful information.

Amazing information here Phil!

Thanks, Maria. I was worried that it might be a bit much (or alternatively not enough!)
