Google Will Not Penalize AI Generated Content

A recent official announcement from Google included these statements:

"At Google, we've long believed in the power of AI to transform the ability to deliver helpful information. In this post, we'll share more about how AI-generated content fits into our long-standing approach to show helpful content to people on Search."

Google is about "Rewarding high-quality content, however it is produced."

"Our focus on the quality of content, rather than how content is produced, is a useful guide that has helped us deliver reliable, high quality results to users for years."

"The helpful content system was introduced last year to better ensure those searching get content created primarily for people, rather than for search ranking purposes."

"When it comes to automatically generated content, our guidance has been consistent for years. Using automation—including AI—to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies." (Emphasis added).

This is in line with how we've always thought about empowering people with new technologies. We'll continue taking this responsible approach, while also maintaining a high bar for information quality and the overall helpfulness of content on Search.

"... it's important to recognize that not all use of automation, including AI generation, is spam. Automation has long been used to generate helpful content, such as sports scores, weather forecasts, and transcripts. AI has the ability to power new levels of expression and creativity, and to serve as a critical tool to help people create great content for the web." (Emphasis added).

"... however content is produced, those seeking success in Google Search should be looking to produce original, high-quality, people-first content demonstrating qualities E-E-A-T."

Use Tools Like ChatGPT Wisely

So in summary, by all means use tools like ChatGPT to generate article content quickly.

Just make sure that what you're producing is aimed at your human visitor, rather than attempting to manipulate the search engines.

I know! What seems stupid is someone saying that the use of new technology is banned from one thing or another...good luck. i thot we are supposed to embrace new technology because there's always a leak. like, it takes the right prompt to get certain answers. So it still takes another form of talent to creat e supreme content.

All good and valid thoughts, Jeanine.

This is how I understood it, Phil.

I certainly use AI for ideas and have used it to write passages, but I tend to rewrite, mostly in my own hand before publishing. The main reason I do this is that it is important for our own personality to come out in our writings.

Many thanks for the information.

Richard

Exactly the right attitude, Richard.

It looks like Google is providing us with a little
'wiggle room', but still warms us that it continues to be our responsibility to assure to check the validity or our resources.

Appreciate your passing that along, Phil.

How were you able to receive that verbiage from Google? Is there an info subscription we can subscribe to and receive Google updates?

Thank you,

Steve

Good to hear from you, Steve. Here's the original link: https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content?__s=mimhj8t0sg8bo8k982sw

Thank you, Phil... much appreciated.

PS: Joined Medium.com, lots of great info.

You're welcome, Steve. I'll have a look at medium.com now.

Hi, Phil

I believe that AI will help raise the bar for what is considered complete but succinct and well-organized content.

However, niche experience and expertise may become more essential than ever to produce content that is unique enough to stand out from the rest.

It should be a win-win for search engines and their patrons.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to the organic search traffic of low DA sites after Google implements Bard.

Great comment :)

Thanks, Abie! 🙂

I agree, Frank. The bloggers that will rise to the top will be those who learn how to use (not abuse) this powerful research tool.

It's funny how since the beginning I said this and was shot down on this platform for saying so.

People out of nature will always fear change when it comes to their livelihood until it is literately plastered in their faces proving otherwise.

Glad people are waking up from the stone age and embracing this new era for all us content creators. Now go out and embrace it.

It always takes some time for new things to be accepted, JR. Google's statement will certainly help.
