Don't Let Perfect Get in the Way of Good

This is a lesson I have to learn over and over again.

As some of you may know, I'm currently creating a 12-week training course to be called Happy, Fit and Slim, to be hosted on a website here at Wealthy Affiliate.

There's so much to be covered in the course that I could spend forever creating and "perfecting" it.

And never actually launch it.

And so never actually make any money from it.

Instead, I'm going to pick a launch date, create a week long series of launch emails and videos, followed by opening the course registration on the website.

As I'm going to drip-feed the course lessons one week at a time, I only need to have the first 2 week's lessons complete before launch. I can then prepare the rest of the 12 week's lessons a week in advance, in time for the next drip-feed.

Having a fixed launch date will force me to have the course ready.

It won't be perfect, but I'm determined that it will be good.

You should apply this strategy to every aspect of your online business, including your blog posts.

Make them good:

  • Correct spelling and grammar
  • Useful content that's on point with the title
  • Keyword rich

But they don't have to be perfect. It's much more important to get them out there and go to work on the next one.

You can always go back and make it better.

That's what I intend to do with my second and subsequent launches.

Excellent advice, Phil! Perhaps we become 'way too ego-centered when we think that we must be perfect. Who is the judge? How many of us actually are perfect? Isn't it better to do our best and see what we can offer to those around us, instead of not offering because we have not attained perfection? I certainly agree with you...if I'd waited for perfection on any endeavor, I think I'd still be waiting! It seems to me that reaching perfection is a learned process, and if we don't accept that we'll make mistakes getting there, we'll never arrive...and if we don't ever arrive but have given it our best shot, haven't we accomplished quite a bit anyway?

You said it all much better than I could, Fran. Thanks.

I think that many are afraid of making mistakes fran. So they either don't try, because you can't be seen to have failed if you do nothing. Or they try too hard so that others cannot criticize anything they have done.
Either way, the person is paralysed into inaction.
Do something, for goodness sake, and let's sort the rest later.
Excellent comment Fran. Thought provoking.

I like your statement, "Do smething and let's sort the rest later." Life is to be lived, not just to be looked at and allowed to pass by.

Definitely Fran.
Take care.

This is so true. I am not perfect by any means, but I am a perfectionist and my own worst enemy. In my quest for the ever-elusive perfection, I fail to realize that good is just fine. I really have to force myself to stop tweaking and trying to improve. I've always been this way, so old habits are hard to break.

Me too but it's a habit that's hard to break. You can always come back to something and improve it, but not unless you've first put it out there.

Being perfect doesn't exist in my opinion Phil, we all may strive for it at times, but... it is a myth!!

Just do the best job that we can then move on!

If we want to be perfect in everything we do, we will not get very far I'm afraid!!

You've got this my friend! :-)

Absolutely. It simply results in not moving forward.

A great response Nick. A perfect analysis.

You're spot on there Phil!

Much appreciated Bux, I tell it as I see it my friend! :-)

That's the only way. You me both.

👍👍🦏

Thanks, Nick.

And we all appreciate that.

You're most welcome Phil! :-)

10 0% in argremeent Phil. Speeling is impotent.
In fact, it's a pet hate of mine. So many people cannot spell, or don't check their work.
Lack of books, lack of reading skills. Easy things to put right that will make a difference. To be honest, Phil, if I see a poorly written work, I pass it by. If they haven't the time or inclination to spell properly, make it interesting and used a good mix of words, then why should I waste my time on it.
Yes, totally in accord, Phil. A good one.
Bux

I feel exactly the same way, Bux. If they can't spell (or, worse, not even notice that the spell checker has red underlined a word) how can I take seriously whatever else they are telling me?

Exactly. There are professional standards that we should strive to meet. Does spelling matter, well, yes it does if you hope to make money out of it.
Once again, Phil, a good post.

Back in another life, I had a company that promoted a software product that I'd created. Pre-internet, so we and our competitors advertised through full page ads in trade magazines. Whenever a competitor had a spelling mistake in an ad, I could say "If they can't get their English right, how can you trust their (much more complicated) software".

It was an effective argument.

Wow. So right Phil. They were just advertising their incompetence.

Good plan, Phil. It’s so easy to get weighed down in perfecting our work.

Susan

I find the way to fixing it is to commit to deadlines.
