We are told:

Follow your passion.

Write about something that you love.

Something that interests you.

You’re going to have to write hundreds (if not thousands) of articles on this topic, so choose something that allows you to do this.

Hmm, sounds great in principle.

But, I’m pretty sure I don’t love anything.

I’m almost definitely sure that I’m not passionate about anything.

I know, I’ll choose a topic (or niche if you will) that I have personal experience in, and something that I have researched for my own personal interest.

And that my friends is how my Wealthy Affiliate journey began.

Here I am some 113 days into that first, initial website journey.

Regular content - check (84 articles with 144,419 words)

Regular social interaction - check (Pinterest, Twitter, WA comments, Blog commenting, etc.)

SEO principles followed - check

Regular traffic - check

Sales - check

So, What’s The Problem Partha?

To be honest, the only thing causing a fire in my belly is last night’s Jalfrezi (and not in a good way you understand).

Don’t get me wrong, I am not deserting this site... I mean, GOSH, I can’t.

All that work.

All that effort.

However, I can still request site comments a few times a week, and I can add ONE article a week, no problem. I can update an article here, an article there, add a video, a new image.

You are still in my thoughts my dear, beautiful Original Site.

What About That Other Site You Have Partha?

(You Had To Bring That Up, Didn't You?)

Ah yes, the site about possibly my main interest.

Well, it’s now 3 months old.

It only has a Privacy Policy, an About Me post, and 1 article.

However, to prove EVERYTHING you know WRONG.

That one article is ranked number 9 in Google (although a mere 38 visits in the last month).

Thank you Jaaxy.

Thank you EXTREME low hanging fruit.

But, to be honest, even that site isn’t making me sing and dance.

This needs a little rethink.

What Now?

So, I decided to start a new website (I haven’t forgotten the others, they’re just on the back burner for a bit), and for once, I decided just to write.

Okay, I guess there is a specific niche.

But, in truth, my new website is just getting whatever comes into my head down on (proverbial) paper.

So, I started this weekend.

I have a few articles already written for the new site, but I’m saving those for the future (who knows why?)

I decided to write about something that I discussed recently with someone else (Here at WA).

However, there was a factual answer to the initial question, so this required a little research.

To be honest, I researched the subject for hours and hours, 7 to be precise. And eventually I started to write this article based on the research I had done.

I had completed 946 words by the time I decided to call it a day last night, but I knew precisely what I was going to write today.

However, this was going to be a humdinger of an article, a pillar post if you will. I mean, I’m thinking 4,500+ words, I mean all the bells and whistles, this is going to be the authority post on the subject.

I’m thinking “Featured Snippets” on Google, I’m thinking I’m gonna own Google with this one, in fact if I was partial to an affair, Google is gonna be my side-chick when it comes to this article.

I made sure to check the front page of Google - yeah guys and gals, great information and all that, but I'm pretty sure I can do better.

However, it was time to sleep on it.

Now I will admit I am one for strange dreams every once in a while, but I have to say I never imagined I’d ever dream about Wealthy Affiliate, Jaaxy QSR, KQI or SEO.

Yep. Clearly I’ve hit a new low in my life.

I woke up today and this dream played on my mind.

BUT NO, stick to the plan Partha.

I set about continuing to write my heavily researched article and got about two-thirds of the way through it. We’re talking a healthy 3,000+ words of detailed content.

However, like most dreams, there she was again.

So, I did a quick bit of research on Jaaxy.

My dream had realized a keyword that showed the following statistics (Do not ask me which one - the one with the four most important search results revealed):

Well I never.

So, I decided to write.

No research.

It was a subject I knew well and I enjoyed.

So just write Partha. Don't even think about it, just write

I set a timer for 45 minutes (and before anyone says it, others have often commented on my writing speed, no names mentioned, Neil and Jeff. Yes, men too can type quickly and we can multitask as well).

1,700 words later and I’m nowhere near finished on the article, but it was an absolute pleasure to write.

There wasn’t even a single morsel of research involved.

I just wrote about my own experience and I wrote from the heart.

This is not a subject I would ever consider that I was “passionate” about, but it is something that forms part of my daily life (but then again, so did "ONE article website number 2").

However, writing this article today did really ignite a fire inside me and I enjoyed every single millisecond of those 45 minutes.

In fact, I felt a real sense of loss when that timer went off.

MY QUESTIONS TO YOU

Are you really writing about a subject that you LOVE?

Have you REALLY put ALL thoughts of money to one side and just write from the heart?

Can you really write 1,000+ articles on your niche without EVER getting bored?

I’m not entirely sure if any of the above is truly possible. Sometimes you just have to work through the bad times.

However, for that 45 minutes earlier today, I believe that this is the first time (in many years) that I did absolutely NO RESEARCH and just wrote from the heart.

I’m not going to lie - IT FELT REALLY GOOD.

Thank you for reading

Partha

Great post Partha.

Having a passion, I know where you are coming from.

My passion would be fishing but not a great niche for making any dosh, which at the end of the day is what we are trying to do.

1,700 words in 45 minutes, you got me there!

With over 7 billion Google keyword searches each and every day and all with potential to become a niche. So you'd think it would be easy finding that great niche wouldn't you?

I guess it is for some who have experience as an affiliate marketer.

I just know that if I'd tried to be clever that I would have ended up calling this a day.

Cheers

Mick

Hi Mick,

Always good to hear from you.

Tbh, it was never something that I considered to be a passion, in fact as I've alluded to Doug just below, the new site is just a personal development journey for me.

Just a way to document different things that I have tried (and succeeded or failed at) while trying to "improve myself".

However, I didn't realise how much I enjoyed certain aspects of this "self-improvement".

Look, we spend enough time on each other's sites, so you know my initial niche site is based on experience and then pure research. I'll always continue to update and add content, but it's not something that really get's me going.

I guess more than anything I just enjoy writing, so rather than just sticking blindly to one particular subject, it feels good to cover a wide spectrum from a personal perspective.

Probably not great from a Search Engine ranking and affiliate marketing point of view, but I think I'll work more on the new site than the others for the rest of this year and just see what happens.

On a different note:

Funnily enough, back in day when ranking and affiliate marketing was a lot easier than it is now I promoted a Bass Fishing guide. I knew absolutely nothing about it, so done a little research, threw a load of half-baked articles at the affiliate link, and I did happen to make a fair few sales for a number of months (but times have changed).

You'll know better than me - but do fishermen buy equipment online or do they prefer to visit a shop and see the "goods" for themselves before commiting to a purchase?

It may not be an interest of mine, but I have many friends who have spent thousands of pounds on equipment, etc.

Perhaps something to look into.

Cheers

Good morning Partha,

Thank you for your very comprehensive and interesting blog post.

I always tell the people to find a niche that they are passionate about! I can't think of anything much worse than writing about something that you have no interest in, even if the money is good. It's good to be able to write freely and easily, regarding your niche.

I believe that 1000 articles is very possible for the niche that I am in.

Have a great day.

Roy

Hi Roy,

Thank you for your kind comments.

I totally agree, but to be honest, I'm never sure whether there is anything that I am TRULY passionate about.

Don't get me wrong, there are many things that I love unconditionally and that I hold close to my heart, but the concept of passion somewhat escapes me.

Have a great day too.

Partha

I see love for your niche as something as willing to become an expert in ,learn about it yourself, happy to write about. At the start of your website, you need to create a lot of content to build authority. And yes, I am sure at one point you will reach that moment;you going to think, hell, what can I write about now? What helps me is when I learn myself about getting better in what I have to tell (more knowledgeable) I write down some blog ideas for myself. That list keeps me from running out of ideas.
I also think (but that is an assumption as I did not reach that point yet) when you have enough traffic that converts into sales. You can adjust your publishing schedule to lesser and start a second source of income (read a second website on a topic you love too)
Thanks for this, you got me thinking on this one :-)

Hi Luc,

Thank you for your insightful comments.

I think Andy kinda hit the nail on the head below (and in his follow-up blog post - https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/yumabloggers/blog/passion-a-personal-story-of-how-i-found-my-16-year-niche)

Sometimes you don't even realise that something is your passion, but the more you do it, the passion within you grows.

My main site that I have created was based around personal experience of a topic, and I wanted to help others in understanding the subject.

However, it isn't a subject that I can imagine anyone can be passionate about (I may be wrong).

Plus, yes I agree, as beginners we focus on one site at a time, but this is our business, and eventually we can grow it in many different directions.

I am surrounded with people with diabetes. They are totally ignorant about lifestyle and health. I am trapped in a small village at this point.
So I am writing for those people and talking to them when I get a chance.
My passion is helping those who really needs them.
I am really desperate to reverse the situation by whatever means.

Hi Anusuya,

I totally commend you for your efforts - that is a fantastic thing you are doing.

Having a passion to help others is truly a great gift to bestow and I admire anyone willing to do so.

Thank you so much for your warm, loving and kind heart.

Partha

As life continues more things will enter it and you will find a longer-term passion. I had trouble deciding what I wanted to do with my affiliate marketing career and blogging 16 years ago. All I knew was I wanted to be the best at affiliate marketing just as I have always wanted to be the best at anything I do. I still write about affiliate marketing, social media, and SEO to this day because what once was a quest became my passion. May you be so lucky as to genuinely love what you do.

Andy

Andy,

Always a pleasure to hear from you.

You've actually mentioned something that I truly believe in.

We don't always start out with a passion, but as you say, "a quest can become a passion".

We don't always know what direction we should be heading, but every once in a while a path opens up to us, and then it becomes obvious - this is the path that we were truly meant to follow.
