Open Q for Kyle or Carson: Will Prem mmbrs ever get free SSL for their SiteRubix-hosted subdomains?

As it says in the SitePlus+ section of SiteManager: "Encryption is favoured by search engines and keeps visitor data safe".

Favoured ("favored" to us Yanks) :)
Based on the reading I've done here at WA, I believe, in this instance, "favoured" means:

  • search engines give more trust to https sites than they do http sites in the same niche; and
  • search engines (generally) rank https sites higher than they do http sites in the same niche.

I've no doubt there are outliers, but I believe both statements to be true in greater than 50% of the cases. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

As paying members, should our SiteRubix-hosted domains and sub-domains not be given the trust and ranking boosts that come from having SSL?

Visitor Data Safety
Protecting our visitors' data is a big contributing factor for why many of us upgraded from a free WA account to a Premium one.

As paying members, should we not be able to provide the same protection to all the visitors of our SiteRubix-hosted sites, whether those sites are domains or sub-domains?

Why I'm Asking Now
This is something I've been thinking about, off and on, since I first found out Premium members don't get SSL for their SiteRubix-hosted sub-domains. Finally, I took time from the seemingly-endless list of "things to do" to start the conversation.

What motivated me to put that list aside long enough to make this post was (mostly) this: I think knowing the answer will be helpful to the community.

Given WA has 800,000+ members, it's unlikely I'm the only one wondering if we Premium members will ever get free SSL for our SiteRubix-hosted sub-domains.

As of today, neither Kyle nor Carson seem to have had an opportunity to comment yet. It's understandable: they're busy, it's the holiday season and the annual Black Friday event is in full swing.

This section isn't directed toward them anyway, though they're welcome to read it. It IS on their site, after all, lol.

It's for my fellow members. Especially for those, such as myself, who would use some of the 25 sub-domains we're given with our Premium WA account - IF we could be sure visitor data would be protected on them.

Beyond using them as 'theme & plugin testing sites', I can think of several reasons we would want to build sub-domains not tied to the domains we have hosted here. I'll bet many of you can too.

In my opinion, every site we intend to have visitors on, whether it's a domain or a sub-domain; monetized or not; just for friends, family or for the public, NEEDS to protect the data of those visitors.

This section may help clarify why I think it's possible for WA to provide free SSL to the SiteName.SiteRubix.com sub-domains of members with Premium WA accounts, even if they continue not to provide it to members with free ("Starter") accounts.

If my memory is correct, WA members with free accounts don't get the following for their SiteRubix sub-domains;

  • SiteSpeed
  • SiteProtect
  • SiteSSL
  • SiteComments
  • SiteFeedback
  • SiteSupport

Once we upgrade to Premium WA accounts, those very same sub-domains - that didn't get any of those benefits - immediately get all but one of them 'switched on'. That "one" being SSL.

I took this screenshot today, from Certification Course 1, Lesson 4. It seems to back me up, but let me know if I'm wrong. Building Your OWN Niche Website

The grey section is text I added.

It doesn't matter if no one else does it.
Are there any other platforms that give users free sub-domains and free hosting for them and free SSL certificates for them? I don't know: I've never checked.

Even if there aren't, WA wouldn't use that as justification for not doing it. Every year, WA out-does the competition and what they, themselves, did the year before.

I have great faith in WA and great hope that we may some day get free SSL for our SiteRubix sub-domains.

What's your opinion?
Would you like free SSL added to the 25 sub-domains of WA members with Premium accounts?

Hi, Tania.

You're welcome.

It doesn't affect you yet?

I don't understand. I see you've completed cert course 3: did you not create a free SiteRubix sub-domain in course 1?

very smart!

I can't answer for Kyle or Carson but I would think that the answer would be "no". It costs around $14 a year to own your own domain name and you can then have subdomains on your own dot com so you don't need to use SiteRubix subdomains.

The subdomains on your own dot com can have free SSL certificates too.

Helloooooo, Marion!

You're amazing and I love you.

I'd forgotten we could add sub-domains to our domains. Thank you for the screenshot and for linking to your training.

Still, I think we Premium members should have free SSL for our SiteRubix sub-domains.

One of the selling points of the Premium upgrade is that we get 25 free sub-domains, not just the two that come with a free membership.

How great is that selling point if visitor data isn't protected on any of them?

I know - the domains we host here - up to 25 of them - all come with free SSL. That's an astounding bargain all by itself.

So, why bother including 23 additional sub-domains? I just don't see the point, if visitor data isn't protected on them.

Sharon

They would probably have to make it a blanket deal and provide SSL certificates for all Site Rubix subdomains not just for premium members.

Maybe. But they're capable of some truly incredible things.

I'd bet - if there were challenges to offering SSL on some sub-domains, but not others - Kyle and Carson would be the people to figure it out.

I'm already in awe of all they've been able to do, so I don't think my faith in them to figure this out is misplaced.
