Pinging Does This Still Work?
Back in the day when setting up a wordpress one of the essential steps that "I" used to take was inserting a ping list.
Now I'm not sure if you even know what I'm talking about so I'm just going to get all basic on ya!
When we publish a post we want it to get indexed ASAP, so often we rely on a google sitemap plugin or something similar to help with that.
Wordpress also has a section in the backend that allows you to add the url's of services that you would like to let know that you have updated your blog...
If it's still available as a service available to every wordpress user and the list I use is pretty big - download it here
This method of pinging ensures that I get picked up by RSS as well as indexed.
FYI - I actually go ahead and ping direct to googleping.com most times too.

I have been wondering the same thing. I would like to have my new content indexed quicker. I may try googleping and see what happens. Thank you.
I have a list like that but am not sure if it is helping or hurting with all the changes. On one of the webinars Jay mentioned pinging Reddit. Maybe someone else can clarify.
Reddit is used by "joke farms" now - everything changes.
Informing RS feeders you've updated is no bad thing. But don't take my word for it .. best ask Jay!
I just use the one default service that is listed in the update services button. I have no problem having my posts getting indexed within a day or two.
I think the google sitemap might help more than the update services, but that's just a guess.
The 1 service listed that's listed pingomatic is coolio - Yet only 1 though and often down. Google sitemap sml works if it doesn't get it from the google rss first ;)

I don't. There was a fad for this a few years back, huge ping lists. However, many people believe it's now viewed as a spam signal. Wordpress has it's own ping service built in, they own Ping-O-Matic http://pingomatic.com and it manages it in a way that minor edits and updates don't repeatedly ping, etc. hence the end of plugins such as http://wordpress.org/plugins/cbnet-ping-optimizer/ which they now admit on that download page might never have been necessary in the first place! LOL. :D R. x
I likee cbnet - as it allows you to ping services once published - and if you make amendments too :)
