Today, 8th August 2015, heralds the start of the 2015-2016 English Premier League Football season here in the United Kingdom.

For a bit of fun, let's find out who everybody supports regardless of where you are in the world.

Tell us who your team is, why you support them, who your favourite player is, favourite memories from the past and what your hopes are for this season.

I know that the EPL is popular everywhere these days so come on, give us your thoughts.......also, why not let us know if your favourite sport is something else, who your team is and why.

If you're lucky, I'll put my thoughts down on my favourites too.

Have a bit of fun.....and good luck whoever your team is!

I have to say I am really a rugby fan but I have been to Chelsea, QPR, Charlton and even Millwall things I get talked into lol

You've done the rounds of a few London clubs then Katie, only Spurs, Arsenal, Fulham, Palace, Wimbledon, Brentford and a couple of others to go!!

lol did live in London for quite some time in my many travels, been to Wimbledon but that was for the tennis and the rugby, back home in Scotland now so a few clubs this end

One or two Katie!!

the usual Celtic , Rangers oh did go to St Mirren my grand dad used to say it was a case of spot the spectators lol do prefer the national games always good for the debate since the family consists of many nationalities these days

I too have Scots blood coursing through my veins Katie...Dad and Grandmother born in Glasgow, still have rellies up there but not seen them in decades.
Also lived near Edinburgh for a couple of years as a bairn!

small world eh, I am a west coast girl lol

"Mull of Kintyre, oh mist rolling in from the sea........." LOLssssss

lol love that song

My team is Manchester United, has been since 1967 so I'm not a glory hunter!!

20 top division titles, the most in England, including 13 Premier League titles in the last 23 seasons.
11 FA Cup wins, 2nd only to Arsenal.
3 European Cups (yes... I know you Liverpool fans, you've got 5)
Myriad other cups and trophies....too many to mention.

I support United because they had George Best playing for them in the mid 60's and he's been my favourite player.

My favourite memory is the European Champions League Final in Barcelona in May 1999 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winning goal with virtually the last kick of the match to beat Bayern Munich 2-1......the most dramatic win in the history of the competition!
Shivers down the spine every single time I see it!!

Hopes for the season, I'd like to win the FA Cup again and either win the league or come a strong 2nd behind probably Chelsea.

My other sport is speedway!

Mark

Chesterfield FC for me!

The Spireites...like the leaning tower of Chesterfield!!

Good result today Roland...3-1 against Barnsley!

Pleased to see that for you Roland, hope you have a great season!
Mark

Excellent result Mark.

Current champions Chelsea held 1-1 at home to Swansea City..Chelsea had 'keeper Tibault Curtois sent off and the Swans equalised from the penalty spot.

Leicester City beat Sunderland 4-2 and find themselves at the top of the league after 1 match.

Aston Villa won 1-0 away at new boys AFC Bournemouth.

Manchester United win 1-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a fortunate Spurs own goal.

New boys Watford earned a good 2-2 draw away at Everton.

Last of the new boys Norwich City lost 3-1 at home to Crystal Palace.

Just a few highlights from the first Saturday of this new season with Arsenal and Liverpool getting their season underway on Sunday and Manchester City on Monday 10th.

Actually I'm more of a rugby premiership gal than a footie fan, if I'm honest. I support Notthampton Saints.

My hubby supports Man Utd! And so at this time of year, I once again become a football widow!! Haha!

I did have a brief spell of supporting Liverpool in my childhood days - but I grew out of it, because it was actually more to do with the fact that my brother supported Man Utd and to have something (else) to fight with him about! That said, I did buy the single that they brought out (a really sad rap song - ("sad" as in "bad" rather than gloomy!) and later in life, as a flight attendant I was on a flight with John Barnes who was heading to sign with Newcastle (I heard it first!!) and got his autograph on a sick bag - classy lady! I also remember he had on very stylish shoes!! ;-)

But my dad as a Scot (ps so am I by birth but I only lived there for a year so I guess I'm really English) doesn't have a team in England. He followed Man Utd because of my brother. And I only found out on a trip home earlier this year that he also follows Liverpool because of my brief interest in them! Which is quite sweet really, considering my fickle support but also the fact that I always felt he wasn't that supportive of my interest in football!

Nice thread! Who do you support, Mark?

Great story Sarah,
I'm not much of a rugby fan to be honest and can probably name more of the Welsh team from the 70's than any of today's.
Footy is my thing, mostly Premier League and the England national team...as soon as you mentioned the Anfield Rap my first thought was John Barnes and he also rapped on World in Motion, the England song from Italia '90... probably one of the best football singles there's been.
A Liverpool and Man Utd fan....don't see many of those around!!
I'll reveal my team and thoughts in a separate post Sarah, but it won't surprise many ;-)
Thanks for your bit Sarah....... an autograph on a sick bag, I hope it was empty...hahahaha

Mark I don't know much about European football. Soccer as we call it in the states has grown in popularity. When there is a one to nothing score I just have to think there is a game within the game that the true fans watch. Ball handling, foot work, technique and such. I see how passionate the fans are. I am a fan of American football, basketball, and baseball, both on the pro and collegiate level.I like all the Detroit pro teams,Mich.,Mi.St.and Kentucky on the college level.I do and there is a big following for our national mens and women's soccer teams. ESPN and FOX sports channels show world soccer and I think the"English Premier League".The standings are in the sport pages of news papers.....................Fun topic!...........cheers............Marty::))

Hi Marty

After last year's World Cup in Brasil, your goalkeeper Tim Howard was feted as being USA's Secretary For Defense after his impressive performances!!

Tim started his English career at Manchester United in 2003 and moved to Everton ( a team from the city of Liverpool) in 2007 and has been there ever since.

There's been a few notable USA players in the EPL, Brad Friedel, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Brad Guzan, Kasey Keller and a fair few others.

There have been some notable players going from Europe to the US in recent times, David Beckham to LA Galaxy being amongst the most famous and Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard coming from the EPL this season, Gerrard to LA who are sponsored by Herbalife and Lampard to NYC who are owned by the owners of Manchester City over here!

Thanks for popping in, Mark

Yes Beckham does adds on T.V.. I'm watching highlights of EPL now.......................I just keep getting educated in my old age.......................Young at heart..............I was working with some brother's at church and they we're talking about a church American football league.....................It sounds like fun but age brings on fragility and It takes so long to heal.............Do you call it Football or football?.....................Popping in again,Marty

It's properly named as "Association Football" Marty but became shortened over time to just "football", a noun until it is used as a proper noun!
Come back in any time Marty, hopefully there'll be plenty more to read.
Mark

... had to Google "English Premier League Football" league...

... then had to look up "football" in Google's English - English translation page...

Wait - what was the question?

Dennis

Football!!!
Football Dennis, the real thing, the world game not that gridiron stuff with body padding and helmets....tch, I don't know, some people!!
;-)

I was brought up in Cambridge Street, Derby, right next to Derby County's old football ground so was Derby County supporter up till I was a teenager. (moved to Scotland when I was 11).
In my teens I supported whatever my boyfriend at the time was supporting, so either Rangers or Celtic.
I've no interest in football at all and fortunately, neither did my late hubby!

Not far from the Baseball Ground then Kathy.....well known for terrible, muddy pitches before Derby moved out and into a new stadium.

So you went out with lads who supported Rangers and Celtic, just as well you weren't into football yourself...difficult to know how conversation would have gone!!

139 Cambridge Street a few steps away.I used to play running against the crowd every Saturday. Last to get to the other end forfeited a sweet!

You might have hated football Kathy but great memories nonetheless!!

I have indeed!

Well as Geordie I support Newcastle United don't really have a favourite player now but loved shearer and of coarse wor Kevin Keegan and favourite memory Gazza crying on the pitch and the world cup.

Great stuff Jo,
Wor Kevin....he's from Scunthorpe!!
Italia 90 eh, so near yet so far away......flipping Germans...hahaha
Thanks Jo
Mark

Wor Kev may not be a Geordie but we took him to our hearts while he was our manager and made him an honourable Geordie. Was a bit miffed when he just up and left mid season though. They were the days when a toon fan could hold their head high.

The Cockney Mafia have done you during the last few years Jo, no investment, no passion for the club and no interest other than making money from the club and supporters.
Mark

And they tried to change the name from St James Park to whatever.com arena. He had ir all repainted with the new name in the middle of the night no-one knew about it till the next morning. Needless to say Geordie fans went crazy and he had to change it back to St James Park.

Wasn't it the Sports Direct Arena or something like that Jo?

Doesn't help that he's got the hated Wonga on the front of the shirts as well.

No wonder fans wanted to lynch him!

Yes it was sportsdirectarena.com don't think so. It has always been St James's and hopefully always will and as for Wonga no comment other then he will get lynched one day lol

Have to be a hefty rope with his girth Jo...hahaha

Great start Mark, we are off and running:-)

Yes Gordon, we were top of the league for a bit but I think Leicester might be now!
Not a great performance but I would take 38 rubbish performances if we got 3 points each time...LOLss
Bring on the Villa!
