WordPress 5.0 is Here

WordPress 5.0 is Here

There's a new version of WordPress which incorporates the Blockeditor. It's a new way of adding and editing your content.

I love it.

The WordPress YouTube channel have published a little 1 minute video for your entertainment at YouTube

Before You Update

Please follow these steps:

  1. Don't panic.
  2. Backup your website using FTP and/or a good plugin such as WP Clone or Updraft Plus
  3. Save the files on your computer, not the server.
  4. Install and activate Classic Editor plugin in case you don't like the new editor experience.
  5. Tweak your Settings > Writing to default to the blocks editor. This is a new setting which is added by the Classic Editor plugin.
  6. Type Gutenberg into the dark grey search box at the top of the page and you'll find lots of videos and blogs, mostly from me, to help you with the transition.

Update

After You Update

Don't panic.

Your website's dashboard is going to look somewhat different but everything you need is still available.

When you need to edit an existing post your content gets converted into a Classic block. Classic blocks allow you to edit the content in them in exactly the same way you're used to. You can keep the old stuff in the Classic block and even add some new stuff in the middle of it.

There's also an option to convert the Classic block into blocks. I suggest you get used to adding new content using the block editor before you convert the old stuff.

This weekend using the content Site Content Platform, published two post and both times was not able to modify the post in WordPress block format.

It took me straight to the classic editor, which does not look like the new format.

The way I addreesed the issue was to delete the post and creat a new one in WordPress so that I could make all the changes I wanted too.

Think some of the problem is my Theme, the free version does not allow the options I want; so, I've been getting it done another way.

With the block format you have to change the color and size of the fonts on each block.

That is time consuming, and when pasting from a MS Word in every block there is two or three missed spaces in every block as well.

Is anyone else having this issue?

WordPress converts the Site Content article into a Classic block. You can edit it in the old way or you can click on the three dots and convert it to blocks.

Tried that but it did not work, does that have anything to do with the Theme?

Just upgraded the Theme to the premium version and that fixed the issue of the colors.

Then posted a test from the Site Content Platform and it worked!
There was a couple of updates today also.

This is going to save so much time!

Thanks Marion, "The WordPress Queen". I have just completed a content with WP 5.0, at first it seemed to be a bit of a pain but quickly got used to it and now love it.

I have 2 questions though:

1 - When typing, it takes a while for the letters to appear, there is like a delay, which is really annoying and it takes much longer to complete an article. Is anyone experiencing this?

2 - Something that I cannot do as in the previous version, is to write a text, then upload an image and wrap the text around it, either left or right.

It seems to work only the other way around: first upload the image then type the text. Which is annoying because I usually write my content then when finished I add images that will match the story and placed where needed.

Anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks,

John

There's a Media and Text block to place images and text side by side but I prefer the Columns block. You can also use a Classic block to emulate the old TinyMCE editor on a block by block basis.

About the delay thingy. Check your browser extensions, some of them don't play nicely with the new editor.

Thanks Marion. I am discovering little by little that there are a lot of options to arrive to do exactly to what you want to do. I think that the version 5.0 is great.

Having the same problem, never had to "check my browser extensions" so really do not know how to do this and what it means, can anyone help here?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
With Chrome, click on the 3 dots top right then More Tools > Extensions. If you use a different browser then ask Google.

will do

Are there any extensions in particular that you are aware of that might be a problem? I do not know what to look for here.

Grammarly is one extension that can slow things down. Just check what extensions you have and try turning them off to see if it makes any difference.

Grammarly is one of the extensions I favor but I will turn it off to see what happens. Thanks for the advice. I am a terrible speller.

Yesterday, WP had an update and after updating my problem of having some sort of delay in typing content seem to have vanished. So, all okay now.

Cheers,

I am calling December 7 Marion Balck day!

Yu have been soooo helpful over the past 8 months preparing us all for it. So much so you ought to have an honorary place as an ambassador in regards to the hard work and training given all out of the love for this community and your heart.

Thanks Marion..I was sh*tting bricks about using such an editor previously, but your training helped so much I am now using Thrive! Page editors so easy to use!.

Thanks!

Is it better to use a plugin for backups? I’ve just been using the export function in my back office to save it to my desktop.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes. Tools > Export produces an .xml file which only contains text. The text includes links to the image files, but not the image files themselves. To back up your images, themes, and plugins you'll want to use the plugin.

There was a moment of concern when I first updated and it was not obvious how to fix it; but it was late and decided to sleep on it.

The next day after work; came back to the new 5.0 WordPress and soon realized that once you get used to where everything is, it is nice to see the post in edit mode as it is in your Theme.

Played with it a little and it changes if when you switch Themes, much better, I agree it seems like a big improvement.

Wish I would have known to backup the website, glad nothing happened... will have to learn what that is.

I do back up my content in Word Documents, but sounds like you referring the website itself.

Thanks for the Post been waiting for someone to address it!

It's a good idea to keep your own backups on your own computer. You never know when you're going to need them.

Thanks Marion. When I watched the video first time, I thought it was for the old version. But it seems it still apply to the new version. I managed to update it without having any issues. Many thanks again for that.

OK, I pushed a post live today through SiteContent, but I had trouble editing in the new editor. For instance, I wanted to add a "More" tag, but I couldn't get it into the content that was already posted. It would only add it in a new block after my post.

Same with converting a line of text into a header. I couldn't do it in the actual content, it would add a header in its own block after the original post.

This is probably just me not spending enough time to get used to it, but it could also be an issue with SiteContent? I guess time will tell!

I added the Classic Editor plugin and went back to normal for the time being.

Click on the block where you want to add the read more tag then look for a + symbol just above it. That's where you can add a new block in the position you want it to be. Use the up and down arrows on the left-hand side of the active block to move it up and down.

OK, thanks Marion! I'll give it a try. I'm sure I just need to get used to it!

Just wanted to share a really great walkthrough video I've just watched. It talks you through what's changed and how to use it. Super helpful.

https://youtu.be/6-VxFv1AJVE

The video mentions a "classic wordpress" plugin you can activate if you want to upgrade to WordPress 5 but you're not quite feeling ready for Gutenberg.

Hi Marion, is WP clone still the best plugin to use as a backup. Was just going to install but I see it hasn't had an update for 2 years and is one of the ones that says untested with current version of WP. Is that a problem as I guess I should make backups anyway with some degree of frequency.

Thanks as always for your help

Kevin

I still use WP Clone 3 times a week and I also use Updraft Plus every day. And FTP once a month.
Reply
kevin928 Premium
Thanks Marion, so either WP clone or Updraft Plus then, do you recommend a daily backup if you have added additional posts/pages etc
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I do daily backups even if I don't write anything new. It's routine now.

Hi, Marion thank you for sharing your wisdom, it kind of feels a little scary and online there seems to be a little bit of apprehension.

Taking your advice backing up and adopting a steady as she goes approach and everything should be fine.

Working in blocks is different but it is actually quite fun and adds a new dimension to our content creation.

Thank you, Marion, for all your training on the subject it has been so helpful.

have uploaded Updraft plus but it can't perform backup because

Warning: The scheduler is disabled in your WordPress install, via the DISABLE_WP_CRON setting. No backups can run (even "Backup Now") unless either you have set up a facility to call the scheduler manually, or until it is enabled. when clicking on the go here link it says to remove something within WP settings.
copy of this is here. https://updraftplus.com/faqs/my-scheduled-backups-do-nothing-backup-now-stops-midway/#disablewpcron/

how should I go about disabling? don't want to stop the WA automatic backups from happening.
can you help?

Contact Site Support, RoseAnn. I have my sites hosted elsewhere so I have Updraft Plus set to run daily backups.

I have to admit when I read an article yesterday from Wordfence.com that WordPress would be updating to v. 5.0 TODAY I did panic - but only a little.

I routinely schedule a back up of my site every Sunday and from a tutorial or two from you and / or Smartketeer, I learned how to save the files on my computer so my mini panic was short-lived :-)

My next stop is the YouTube video from your link above.

No panic attacks here!
