What do those orange circles mean?

Updates!

A friend has been adding the content to one of my websites and I hadn't visited it recently. Ooops! I logged in today and saw that the plugins, themes and even WordPress itself needed to be updated. So I decided to video the update process to share it with my Wealthy Affiliate friends.

If you have orange circles in your dashboard then it's time to update your plugins and themes and maybe WordPress too. Please remember to back up your content before making any changes.

This short video will show you how I updated one of my websites which had been suffering from neglect.

Thanks for watching.

Marion, I read one of your other training posts and asked a question about backing up a website that needs updating, but isn't published yet. I don't know if this video answers my question or not. Your help is always appreciated.

Thanks, Marion. That was very easy to follow and helpful, as usual. It's kinda funny because I'm such a technoidiot, but when I was doing my new Privacy Policy last night, I noticed the circles and updated everything while I was there. Also did the back up I learned from your previous video as well while I was at it. Carol

Great tips Marion on what to update first (plugins), then proceed with the "Tools Export" to backup all content and then update any new "Wordpress Version", verify again if any plugins need to be updated. Do I have this correct?

Would I also implement the same process if one of my themes also need to be updated?
Reply
littlemama Premium
I think this is correct with both questions you have.
Reply
phildora Premium
Thank you for confirming. I wasn't certain if I had to update a theme that I would follow the same process.
Reply
littlemama Premium
I think themes are okay to update whenever they are available, if Marion reads this and thinks differently then I'm sure she can offer you better advice. :)

Just wanted to help in the meanwhile.

Before any updates I backup. Most updates to themes, plugins and WordPress are to plug security holes but even those can break a website. Backing up doesn't take long so don't hesitate.

Hi Marion! After I read your articles on what and how to backup, you better believe this will be process number 1(filed under critical)!

Thanks again for great advice and training!

Thank you for the excellent blog today. Since I am a newbie and just learning I have a question: Kyle said our websites on WA are backed up everyday. Why do we need to back them up?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Sometimes things can go wrong My websites are too important to leave for others to back them up.
Reply

Okay I understand now. Thanks, I will go follow you video and backup my site. You are awesome!

I have never backed up my WP content ever, before updating WP itself. I have never had any issues. Guess what I will be doing going forward?

Thanks for giving me the link to here on my blog today!

The last major update didn't seem to cause any problems except that it came with security issues. The previous 2 both broke a number of websites.

Thank for stopping by Daniel. I know how busy you are.

So, by exporting the files, the Database is backed up, too? Good to know...
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Weeelll, sort of. There's a plugin that I use called WP Database Backup which backs up the database properly. It's especially useful if you're moving your website from one host to another.

Thanks for your reply but I have posted a question asking about the automatic backup done by WA. So I will wait until I get some response to the question before going any further. I don't really see the point of manually backing up if it is being done for me.

It also sounds complicated I can do without complications here.

Hi C&C,

Backing up your content takes just a few clicks as shown in the video.

WA's backups are for when your website 'breaks' and should only be used in an emergency. Complete manual website backups need both Tools==> Export and FTP to include all your media, plugins, themes and settings. If you're happy to reinstall your plugins etc. then just do the content backup. Personally, I backup everything.

Thanks Marion. I watched your video but did not see anything that referred to what you call FTP. What is this please?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
FTP = File Transfer Protocol. It's a way of uploading and downloading files between your computer and your website. If you're using WA hosting you don't need it yet, you're still on a steep learning curve. When you're ready for FTP I've done some training on using it

Hi Marion!

It's great to forge ahead and write new articles, be socially active, etc., but it's also necessary to take care of the underpinnings of the site.

Nice nudge!

Hello Marion. Thank you for the reminder and for showing us how easy it is to do. I was wondering if the WordPress update is safe to do since I've seen some comments about it breaking sites. I'm holding off until I know that it's not going to create more work for me after downloading it. Have a fabulous Sunday! Angela

MarionBlack Premium
That's why I recommend backing up. If you're hosted at WA they keep backups for you but you should also do it yourself to be safe.
