Overcoming the Odds

Everyday we are faced with challenges, the choices that we make on how to deal with them effects our lives and the others around us. Inspiration is a driving force that which we can use to accomplish anything and overcome the greatest of odds.

I would like to share with you one of my sources of Inspiration...my son.

At the age of 32 and at a point in my life where I was "Starting Over" from a difficult divorce, job change, and multiple other stresses, I was going to have another child.

WOW! what do I do? So many choices but I knew what I had to do...I would soon be welcoming another life into this world.

During my first trimester I was informed that the odds of my child being born with Down's Syndrome was in the 80th percentile. Faced again with hard choices I made the only one possible, I was going to have a special needs child.

So the date was set that we would welcome my son into this world, April 4, 1995.

Little did I know, that this would be one of many challenges that my son would overcome. He was born with no physical signs of Down's Syndrome or any other birth defect, he was perfectly normal.

During the early years he learned to walk and talk a "little behind" schedule but every child progresses at there own pace and the doctors said there was no need to worry.

At age 5 it was time to start school and that's when things started becoming noticeable, there was a problem.

For the next 2 years we went through every diagnosis from ADHD to Autism, and finally the public school system saying he was "unteachable" and needed to be placed in an alternative school for the mentally retarded.

I was livid to say the least, my son was not mentally retarded, he would go to school and graduate, he would lead a happy and productive life, and I was not going to give up on him.

I took my son out of that school district and entered him into another public school district and found out the truth...my son was severely dyslexic, one of the worse cases they had ever seen. At least now we knew what we were dealing with and it was time to make a plan of action.

The next 10 years was filled with some of the most awesome educators on the face of this planet and they saw what I saw...All his potential!

On May 17, 2014 Midian Gage Mabry graduated Cum Laude 3.7 gpa, he is my inspiration that anything is possible.

You did it! Now it's off to college and your next great success!

This is big brother leaving it up to little brother to carry on the candle for next years graduating class of 2015!

Every time I need that extra push I think of my son, all the times he was told you will never do anything, All the times that other kids teased him and called him retarded, he never gave up!

Because of you I will never give up!

You can search key words for rankings but writing from the heart is the best tool I have found.

Here's to all at finding there inspiration to overcoming the odds and becoming all that you are!

Thank you for sharing this, what an inspiration your son is. Kudos to you for sticking it out and standing up to the school system and fighting for finding out what your son really was struggling with. A powerful example for all of us mother's who see our children struggle with one thing or another everyday.

Thank you so much for your caring support! Children are often diagnosed incorrectly and unnecessarily medicated. I hope that in the future our medical professionals will come up with better screening methods.

Thanks Darlene! Congratulations! Such an inspiring story. How often do people get ensnared by ignoramuses, follow stupid directions and ruin lives the lives of those they love. So happy you persevered and found a way!
