What is a Google Featured Snippet?

Featured snippets attempt to immediately answer a user's question eliminating the need to look further. Hence, they're also often referred to as "answer boxes". You achieve additional brand exposure if your post is featured in Google search results.
Naturally, I've seen many featured snippets in the SERPs. You often hear the position referred to as position zero. But i was not entirely comfortable with the question, what is a Google featured image?
