Hi, Who?

I see it so many times when I want to leave comments on other websites.

I like to add that personal something by saying "Hi and the name of the person who owns the site," but there are allot of websites of people that already went through the training that still says admin.

Changing this gives your website a personal and trustworthy feel.

If you take yourself as someone who has to trust other websites. You don't know the people who are behind the article and if they are called admin, would you trust them?

How do you change it?

Take a look at this training from Course 2, lesson 8.

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/building-...

It's quick and easy to do and when you do this, your site will have so much more personality.

If you wait too long before you do this, you will have to change allot of posts and pages, so rather do it before you write your next post.

Real name or pen name?

Even if you want to use a pen name, if is fine, it would sound better than admin.

When I started working online, I didn't want my real name all over the place, but in the end, I learned for personality and branding, it is better to use my personal name. And I'd have to open new social media accounts in someone else's name and what about the picture? Would I choose to be a cat, a lion or a dog?

I get it, sometimes we don't want to expose ourselves too much, but even Ramsay of Blog tyrant started using his own picture after a year (or two) and when he did, his followers tripled.

Facebook scams

While we're on the topic of who to be and just to show you how much this can bring distrust, do you know about the facebook scams going on all over (and I've seen it on Google+ too). I've heard about it and seen it myself. Luckily I'm always sceptical when someone contacts me.

The person who creates the profile adds a picture of some kind of army veteran with a name (Corporal ....-whoever).

They invite you to be a friend and as soon as you accept, you get a personal message from that person. They tell you that they are in "Afghanistan" (or somewhere) fighting for their country.

When you ask them about how it looks there or the weather, they ask you about your economic state to find out if you have allot of money.

If you give the impression that you don't have money, don't worry - they won't bother you anymore.

But if you give the impression that you are well off and making allot of money or working a full time job with a great pay - they will start telling you how bad it is going with them and if you wouldn't mind giving them some money, because they are fighting for their country after all. If you start giving small amounts, they will ask for more and so the cycle will continue. They will make allot of promises and in the end - they're not really who they say they are.

So, according to this story, do you think it will be to your advantage to stay an unknown?

What's your opinion?

Do you trust someone who wants to sell you something and you don't even know what they look like?

What is your opinion, real name or pen name?

What pictures should we use if we decide to use a pen name?

Keep moving forward

I wish you the best of luck in your online journey blessings in abundance!

Thank you for sharing the link.

My pleasure, I do know that the training can be overwhelming, add that to creating a website for the first time in your life and you've got allot of stuff to learn all in one gulp. Can be overwhelming as well as confusing.

Linda, you're so right. We just have to keep learning and moving forward.

Yes, everyday something new.

I never thought 'd use this expression lol! You are making an excellent point LPretorius but commit the same "sin" Amongst all the names on this forum, I cannot remember yours either but just the one I find here that is very impersonal! Some of the "handles" are obvious, like mine, Mike1942. At least people know who to address, right!?
But you made an excellent point here that I had on my mind for quite some time and did;t know how to bring across without sounding rude!
Hey I just found your name in the post by Rita, Linda! I kind of knew that it was Linda but didn't trust my memory!

That is so true, when I signed up at WA the name Linda was already taken, so I went with my initial and surname, but haven't got a clue whether I can change it and if I can, how.
I hope my post didn't come across as rude, because if there's on thing I don't want to be is rude, just straight forward.

No, no Linda, that is quite alright. I just thought that when your 'handle" isn't clear on how you want to be addressed it would be nice if you sign out with "Linda", so everyone knows how to start off a note to you! This goes for many of the members here!

Great post, Linda
This topic has crossed my mind a lot. As a newbie I wondered what to do about this and you're right, it feels vulnerable to expose yourself to the world. But I think it's best in the long run to be genuine and use your own name.

Thanks,
Rita

Yes in the end, according to me, it's the best and it becomes easier as time goes on. If you look at G+ for instance, how are you going to setup your name and profile if you're trying to do it as someone else. How are you going to prove to Google in the end that you are who you say your are?
Just things that came across my path that made me decide to rather post as me and not someone else.

Wow! You are fantastic. Thanks for sharing. I have to follow you now.

Thank you for that compliment, I hope I could help.
The best of luck on your website and keep moving forward, you'll see everything fall into place.

Hi Linda

Thanks for this blog, I enjoyed reading it and I think the content is valuable especially for newbies.

I've always believed in using my own name even though I really didn't like the idea when I first started publishing online. So I do understand that some people take a while to feel comfortable using their name.
But as you say, personality and branding are important.

I was interested in your mention of the Afghanistan 'thing'. I got caught for that in my 'greener' days, not so long ago actually. These people really know how to get to the uninitiated when it comes to scams.

Thanks again Linda.

Best wishes

Valerie

Hi Valerie,
Thank you for your input.
I didn't like the idea too, I started out my website with a pen name and then later had to change everything, because the further my site grew, the more I realized that I can't be that person, I am Linda. How do I answer questions addressed to someone else. It was difficult, but I believe in the end it is worth it.
Yes, Afghanistan - another scam exposed, I hope everybody reads that.
