Hey Wealthy Affiliate fam,

So, here’s this week's challenge....simply share your “why”with us!

Step 2: Give us the backstory! Describe how this motivation keeps you going, especially on the days that feel tough. Let your personality shine through.
Step 3: Check out what others are sharing and like your favorite “why” stories. You can like up to 3 different entries.

3 weeks ago, my husband and I were reminiscing about our honeymoon. We checked out the cost of the same trip and found out it costs 20k now with two kids.
I went onto chatgpt and asked, how do I make 20k in a year?
Thanks to my previous experience, I can set up websites and write content. Chatgpt told me I could build websites for small companies to earn my 20k.
But I felt I needed my own website first. To do that, I'd have to buy my own domain and ideally be in WA. While I was playing around in the hubs, I found a niche i might be able to build on.
Now my why is to earn the trip plus share my niche knowledge. And also help others build their websites in the AI age!
This motivation drives me to post one post a day. It also drives me to earn my capital from another online platform that I do work for.
It gets discouraging earning money from there, because it's not steady. But I treat every payout as God given and my skills as God given. I am grateful I actually could start on this journey.
Hey there, and thanks for sharing!
Love that you and your husband set such an awesome goal...recreating that honeymoon with the kids sounds incredible. Combining your web skills with some clear success goals (and of course ongoing effort), can be a path to achieve your $20K mark and far beyond.
And building out your website will serve a foundation of your business, and then helping others do the same is spot on, especially with how AI is changing the game. You could effectively promote WA here and earn sizeable commission in the process.
Keep it up, and know that trip is totally within reach, and your future "YOU" is totally within reach. Keep working towards your WHY!
I ended up here at WA when I was searching the internet for the best learning platform that will teach me how to create my own website / blog without all the technicalities. Not for the MMO reason.
I wanted an "all-in-one package" that takes care of domains, hosting, emails, technical issues. I wanted a comprehensive learning platform.
My motivation at that time was to create my own online space for my voice, leapfrog barriers and connect, find healing in blogging, and to support my local activism and spiritual journey.
My motivation today - after a decade - is that WA is constantly evolving with the technological changes. I have so much to learn that I still dont find enough time to do so.
Although I'm not earning from online affiliate marketing, I have been able to utilize the 50 websites hosting for Premium Membership to build websites for local clients. I am satisfied with the income I'm earning from hosting websites for clients right here at WA under my Premium Membership account. It pays for my annual membership fees, and more.
Thanks for sharing your whys here Kessy!
I love that you came to WA for an all-in-one solution and found a space that supports your journey and what you want to achieve . We can certainly help you out with that and provide you with an environment here where you can truly be fulfilled and advance your education with eery day that passess.
Even without focusing on affiliate marketing, you’re using the platform to build client sites and cover your membership, many are using their "skill sets" here to earn a 6-figure income online.
Glad to see how it’s working for you and wishing you nothing but success in the year ahead. :)
Hi Kyle, thank you so much. Yes, its a new skills sets I've gained and I'm learning much from the courses as well as the community.
I'm always grateful to WA (yourself and Carson) for blessing the world with this Learning Platform.
Much blessings and love for WA, the community and you all.
When I came to WA I wanted to learn how to create a secure website to sell my book online. I was curious to see if it's possible to reach readers through my website. Within a few months I achieved that goal and lost interest in the project.
Then I personally, physically, built a shed in my garden... to my very fancy specifications. It's pretty. After the task was complete, I lost interest in the shed.
A Pattern
I soon realized the end result is not what is so exciting for me. It is the journey. I was always in a rush to complete the task to get to the end goal. I have learned that this is NOT where the value is for me.
Building relationships, sharing ideas and savoring or learning new ideas is where it's at. It creates a rich and fulfilling life and WA fits this picture very well. Thus building my online business through WA is very fulfilling. There is always new ideas, sharing and involvement within the community. Huge motivation for me.
Now I have set up a new challenge for myself. I want to harness the creative force within me by following the following principle.
"To think FROM what I want and that is putting myself right into the midst of my fulfilled desire first." Give me a chance to explain this further.
Apparently the above works magic.
My fulfilled desire is to be in Vegas, with all the super affiliates, ya?
So now, to think FROM my fulfilled desire is to...
Every night before I fall asleep, when I am in that groggy state, the last idea in my mind is that of me in Vegas... flying to, arriving then falling asleep in my room at the MGM and partaking in the yearly conference. Eating that food and enjoying the activities. Meeting with the co-founders - the whole shebang!
Living it in my mind as though it is happening. Apparently this does the trick because for everything to exist, the chair, the clothes etc, they existed in someone's imagination first before they were created. So apparently it never fails. I have to commit it to my mind as the last thought before I fall asleep. Apparently nothing happens if I don't live the reality of it first in my mind.
So I am putting everyone on notice so that when you finally see me in Vegas, you will know where it began and who knows you might decide to use use it to create your own dreams.
There you have it. My motivation is to go to Vegas and the process I use to keep going at my efforts is as above.
See you there Kyle and whoever else makes it to Vegas. This year may not be the year but we shall meet.
Cheers
Midsummer.
Hey Midsummer,
Thanks for sharing your insightful whys and what motivations you. It is definitely inspiring to see how you’ve discovered that your motivation lies in the journey itself, not just the end goal. I am very much the same way, without loving what you do and loving the learning process, the end goal doesn't amount to much.
Loving the way you’re visualizing Vegas as well...with that principle of thinking from what you want. It’s a powerful mindset! Everything starts as a thought and a goal, and then being on a mission to achieve that goal and letting nothing stand in your way will lead to accomplishment.
Keep that vision alive, and I have no doubt we’ll see you in Vegas next year. I am of course here to help you out every step of the way as well!
Thank you Kyle. I'm on a mission and will let nothing stand in my way till that goal is accomplished.
I have been practicing Optometry in my own solo practice since 2006. Right now I need to be in my office almost every day all day.
MY motivation to create an online business is so I can take time away from the office, or even retire from Optometry all together.
I want the flexibility to be able to travel for more than a week here and there and do not want to be tied to my office.
Also, as I reach the age of "retirement" I want something I can do from home or where ever I happen to be, something enjoyable and fun as well.
When I cam across Wealthy Affiliate, I thought that this could be it. So I joined. It is now just past 1 year since my joining.
Although I am not yet making any real good money from it yet, I am optimistic that as I develop it it will grow fruits.
I think I could have been making more money by now had I had the time to put a lot more work into it.
I am now putting more time into it and hopeful for the future.
Here is to all of our success 🥂!
Thanks for sharing your whys Mark. Building something that gives you freedom beyond the office is an ideal goal, I can tell you first hand as I have had the flexibility of being at home and operating "remotely" far before that was even a thing. For you, this is probably especially ture with a career as demanding as Optometry.
It’s a journey, and putting in that extra time is going to pay off. Here’s to your vision of success, more time, and that flexibility you’re working toward!
My Why For me, the motivation behind building an online business is both personal and deeply rooted in the desire for creative freedom and financial independence. Creating something from scratch that reflects my vision feels empowering, but it’s also about more than just autonomy. I love the idea of establishing something sustainable that will support not only my dreams but also provide value to others.
After years in the traditional workforce—where I spent a lot of time managing, marketing, and creating under someone else’s vision—I realized I was ready to pour my energy into something of my own. I wanted a venture where I could bring together my passion for art, design, and helping people while working on my terms. On tough days, when things get overwhelming, I remind myself of that dream of freedom: the ability to travel, connect with others, and live more fully. That vision keeps me moving forward, especially when things don’t go as planned.
Sharing and Supporting I’ll check out others' "why" stories! It’s inspiring to see how different people are driven by such varied motivations. Sometimes those shared stories are a reminder that we’re all on unique but intersecting paths.
Slayma, thank you for sharing such a brilliantly articulated ‘why’!
The drive to create something that reflects your vision and passion for art, design, and helping others is incredibly powerful. That is fulfilling as well. If you have fulfillment in your life, and it surrounds how you make money, it is the ideal combination.
Shifting from building under someone else’s vision to creating a business that’s truly yours is a journey filled with freedom, growth, and purpose.
Your dream of blending financial independence with creative freedom, travel and connectivity is what running and internet business is all about. Those are the luxuries it affords us.
It’s amazing to see you connecting with others' stories here, too; as you said, our paths may be unique, but they’re all driven by that desire to build something meaningful.
Thanks for sharing, awesome stuff here! :)
I think I can answer the question quite easily...
I was brought up with very little and my parents did not really have a lot to offer me when it came to keeping up with the Jones's.. but their love was always there...
When I started work as a Firefighter I gave most of my money to them as I knew they were without... and I made as much effort as I could to save what I could save...
Money is never enough, so yes.. I came here in the hope of finding a passive income to help me and my family further ... I have ups and downs..
But what keeps driven and going?
Is it the money? Hope? .. Not me... My Pride only.. I know I can do it.. and I will never stop until I get there...
(plus I enjoy it :))
Thank you for sharing your story Chris! Your journey, rooted in both pride and the desire to support your family, is truly inspiring. I also didn't grow up with a lot, had hard working parents, but we were never "ahead".
The resilience you've shown...working hard not just for yourself but for your loved ones, is a powerful testament to your character. Work ethic and doing so with a sustained goal is how we achieve. That is something that I learned at an early age.
It’s clear that this journey is about so much more than just money for you; it's about proving to yourself what you're capable of and building something lasting. I am in the same boat...and the funny thing is that when you have a mission that looks like that, the money tends to naturally follow.
Appreciate you man, and thanks for sharing! :)
Thank you so much... I appreciate you saying that... and good to hear from you too.. sent you a PM back too :)
My Why is pretty simple. I want a comfortable retirement beginning in a few years. Most of my adult life I have worked two and three jobs to make ends meat. I'm not sure what it is like anymore to have any leisure time or hobbies just for fun. I would like to discover that again. I don't want to live extravagantly, just comfortably.
I also want to fund a kidney project that I started after having a kidney removed. It is to help families with hotel and meal expenses as they undergo kidney treatment.
Jay, your ‘why’ is inspiring.
After working so hard over the years, the dream of a comfortable retirement with time for leisure and hobbies is definitely well-deserved. And also, creating an online business to fund that future while also supporting your kidney project is something where you can truly have a positive impact on people's lives.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us! It is a great reminder of the good that can come from channeling our goals into something meaningful for ourselves and others. :)
I have been doing this for a long time, but recently, my modus operandi has changed. I earn enough money from old blogs, all of which started years ago, to fund my permanent roaming as a digital nomadess.
Two years ago, I visited Guatemala and found heaven on earth. Below is the view from my bedroom window. If you like this this post and I win, I will double the cash and send it on to whoever is the most desperate family at the time.
When I stand on the shores of Lake Atitlán, I am captivated by its breathtaking beauty—the crystal-clear waters reflecting the towering volcanoes and the endless sky. Yet beneath this picturesque surface lies a profound injustice that fills me with a feeling of deep sorrow. More importantly, it makes me furious.
The Maya communities here endure hardships that seem unimaginable in our modern world. Most families live without a bathroom. Most houses have a toilet, which is separated from the living area, usually by a curtain. So, every day, the family members walk down to the lake to wash themselves and their clothes.
It's a daily struggle that steals time and energy, perpetuating a cycle of hardship. And don't even get me stared about the pollution this causes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Month after month, I witness families stretching every quetzal, yet it's never enough to see them through to the end. The crushing weight of poverty leaves them in a constant state of uncertainty and need. What breaks my heart the most is seeing the children—bright, eager minds full of potential—who are denied the basic right to education. There aren't enough teachers, and schools are ill-equipped. Many children are forced to leave school as early as eight years old. Instead of learning and playing, they toil away in the building sites, fields, or markets, working twelve-hour days, seven days a week. The trucks take them to work, and they all stand in the back of pick-ups trucks for at least an hour, which could be double that to get to work. the trucks leave at 6.00 am and depart at 6.OO pm
This is not just a local tragedy but a glaring injustice demanding my urgent attention. The Maya people of Lake Atitlán are rich in culture and spirit, yet they are marginalized and overlooked. Their daily reality is a stark reminder that beauty can mask deep suffering. They still have deep roots in the old ways that haven't changed for Centuries; the family and community are at the root of everything they do. They help each other because they don't get help from a government that wants to wipe them out.
I cannot stand by as they are deprived of basic human rights—access to water, education, and a childhood free from labor. I already spend a a thousand dollars a month just on whoever is most desperate at the time.
I want more money to fund one school, which will be open to all ages, including adults, to start with. Then hopefully there will be more around the Lake.
As many of you know I am at present wandering in South America but i still send money to the place I call home every month
Thank you for reading this far.
Hey Catherine,
Thanks for sharing such a heartfelt story here. It is definitely inspiring to all of us to see how you’re using your success and freedom as a digital nomadess to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the Maya people around Lake Atitlán (beautiful pic btw).
Your goal to create a school is also powerful, education is one of the most transformative gifts that anyone can have and we live and breathe education (and actually have an exciting update we are working on to the training environment here).
It’s clear that this place has captured not just your heart but your sense of purpose. Keep up the amazing work, and thanks for sharing your "whys" here!
Thank you that means a lot, and yes it has given me a renewed purpose which is what everyone needs when approaching 70
Hey there!
My "why" was originally to make a little extra money. I have been at this for a years and honestly I have been spinning my wheels. I got a little caught up in guru overload and really got more confused, and burnt out from something that was supposed to be a fun little side gig.
But now my "why" is a little different Yes I want another income stream, I am planning for retirement in 5 years and want to have this business running and generating income for that. We all know life has gotten ridiculously expensive, and living on a pension will get harder and harder.
My why is because I dont give up. I needed to take a step back and clear the cache so to speak. I have stayed off my social media for the past 6 weeks. Worked out on paper why I am doing this, what I want to put in and what I expect to get out. I worked onmy mindset. And i decided to remove all the other "Gurus" from mysocials. Wealth Affiliate is the program/community I will be sticking with to build my business, and have fun doing it.
Thank you for sharing your journey Kennia!
The ups and down I think are something that we all experience, at different levels and in different shapes and sizes. It’s easy to get caught in the cycle of information overload, especially when we’re just looking for straightforward ways to build something meaningful. Taking that step back to re-evaluate, clear out the noise, and redefine your ‘why’ shows some real determination.
Creating a stable retirement income and sticking with Wealthy Affiliate, can and will be your path to make that happen. Just add effort, persistence and a bit of time to the mix and you are golden.
Building a business that’s both successful and fun is absolutely possible, and that is the opportunity that the internet has provided us all. We are on an even playing field.
Thanks for sharing your story/goals and your whys make a ton of sense. ;)
