I think I can answer the question quite easily...
I was brought up with very little and my parents did not really have a lot to offer me when it came to keeping up with the Jones's.. but their love was always there...
When I started work as a Firefighter I gave most of my money to them as I knew they were without... and I made as much effort as I could to save what I could save...
Money is never enough, so yes.. I came here in the hope of finding a passive income to help me and my family further ... I have ups and downs..
But what keeps driven and going?
Is it the money? Hope? .. Not me... My Pride only.. I know I can do it.. and I will never stop until I get there...
(plus I enjoy it :))
Thank you for sharing your story Chris! Your journey, rooted in both pride and the desire to support your family, is truly inspiring. I also didn't grow up with a lot, had hard working parents, but we were never "ahead".
The resilience you've shown...working hard not just for yourself but for your loved ones, is a powerful testament to your character. Work ethic and doing so with a sustained goal is how we achieve. That is something that I learned at an early age.
It’s clear that this journey is about so much more than just money for you; it's about proving to yourself what you're capable of and building something lasting. I am in the same boat...and the funny thing is that when you have a mission that looks like that, the money tends to naturally follow.
Appreciate you man, and thanks for sharing! :)
My Why is pretty simple. I want a comfortable retirement beginning in a few years. Most of my adult life I have worked two and three jobs to make ends meat. I'm not sure what it is like anymore to have any leisure time or hobbies just for fun. I would like to discover that again. I don't want to live extravagantly, just comfortably.
I also want to fund a kidney project that I started after having a kidney removed. It is to help families with hotel and meal expenses as they undergo kidney treatment.
Jay, your ‘why’ is inspiring.
After working so hard over the years, the dream of a comfortable retirement with time for leisure and hobbies is definitely well-deserved. And also, creating an online business to fund that future while also supporting your kidney project is something where you can truly have a positive impact on people's lives.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us! It is a great reminder of the good that can come from channeling our goals into something meaningful for ourselves and others. :)
I have been doing this for a long time, but recently, my modus operandi has changed. I earn enough money from old blogs, all of which started years ago, to fund my permanent roaming as a digital nomadess.
Two years ago, I visited Guatemala and found heaven on earth. Below is the view from my bedroom window. If you like this this post and I win, I will double the cash and send it on to whoever is the most desperate family at the time.
When I stand on the shores of Lake Atitlán, I am captivated by its breathtaking beauty—the crystal-clear waters reflecting the towering volcanoes and the endless sky. Yet beneath this picturesque surface lies a profound injustice that fills me with a feeling of deep sorrow. More importantly, it makes me furious.
The Maya communities here endure hardships that seem unimaginable in our modern world. Most families live without a bathroom. Most houses have a toilet, which is separated from the living area, usually by a curtain. So, every day, the family members walk down to the lake to wash themselves and their clothes.
It's a daily struggle that steals time and energy, perpetuating a cycle of hardship. And don't even get me stared about the pollution this causes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Month after month, I witness families stretching every quetzal, yet it's never enough to see them through to the end. The crushing weight of poverty leaves them in a constant state of uncertainty and need. What breaks my heart the most is seeing the children—bright, eager minds full of potential—who are denied the basic right to education. There aren't enough teachers, and schools are ill-equipped. Many children are forced to leave school as early as eight years old. Instead of learning and playing, they toil away in the building sites, fields, or markets, working twelve-hour days, seven days a week. The trucks take them to work, and they all stand in the back of pick-ups trucks for at least an hour, which could be double that to get to work. the trucks leave at 6.00 am and depart at 6.OO pm
This is not just a local tragedy but a glaring injustice demanding my urgent attention. The Maya people of Lake Atitlán are rich in culture and spirit, yet they are marginalized and overlooked. Their daily reality is a stark reminder that beauty can mask deep suffering. They still have deep roots in the old ways that haven't changed for Centuries; the family and community are at the root of everything they do. They help each other because they don't get help from a government that wants to wipe them out.
I cannot stand by as they are deprived of basic human rights—access to water, education, and a childhood free from labor. I already spend a a thousand dollars a month just on whoever is most desperate at the time.
I want more money to fund one school, which will be open to all ages, including adults, to start with. Then hopefully there will be more around the Lake.
As many of you know I am at present wandering in South America but i still send money to the place I call home every month
Thank you for reading this far.
Hey Catherine,
Thanks for sharing such a heartfelt story here. It is definitely inspiring to all of us to see how you’re using your success and freedom as a digital nomadess to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the Maya people around Lake Atitlán (beautiful pic btw).
Your goal to create a school is also powerful, education is one of the most transformative gifts that anyone can have and we live and breathe education (and actually have an exciting update we are working on to the training environment here).
It’s clear that this place has captured not just your heart but your sense of purpose. Keep up the amazing work, and thanks for sharing your "whys" here!
Hey there!
My "why" was originally to make a little extra money. I have been at this for a years and honestly I have been spinning my wheels. I got a little caught up in guru overload and really got more confused, and burnt out from something that was supposed to be a fun little side gig.
But now my "why" is a little different Yes I want another income stream, I am planning for retirement in 5 years and want to have this business running and generating income for that. We all know life has gotten ridiculously expensive, and living on a pension will get harder and harder.
My why is because I dont give up. I needed to take a step back and clear the cache so to speak. I have stayed off my social media for the past 6 weeks. Worked out on paper why I am doing this, what I want to put in and what I expect to get out. I worked onmy mindset. And i decided to remove all the other "Gurus" from mysocials. Wealth Affiliate is the program/community I will be sticking with to build my business, and have fun doing it.
Thank you for sharing your journey Kennia!
The ups and down I think are something that we all experience, at different levels and in different shapes and sizes. It’s easy to get caught in the cycle of information overload, especially when we’re just looking for straightforward ways to build something meaningful. Taking that step back to re-evaluate, clear out the noise, and redefine your ‘why’ shows some real determination.
Creating a stable retirement income and sticking with Wealthy Affiliate, can and will be your path to make that happen. Just add effort, persistence and a bit of time to the mix and you are golden.
Building a business that’s both successful and fun is absolutely possible, and that is the opportunity that the internet has provided us all. We are on an even playing field.
Thanks for sharing your story/goals and your whys make a ton of sense. ;)
Hey Wealthy Affiliate fam! 🌟
I’m excited to join this challenge and share my “why” for building an online business. It’s something that truly drives me every single day.
For me, exploring Wealthy Affiliate is all about building financial freedom and creating a life with more time for my children and family. Working a traditional job in government has always felt like there’s a glass ceiling holding me back. While I’m grateful for the experience and stability, the income limits and rigid structure don’t align with my long-term dreams. I want a career that doesn’t just pay the bills but also lets me design my life around what matters most, my kids, my passions, and ultimately, a more fulfilling life.
On those tough days, this vision keeps me going. I remind myself that I’m not just building an income stream; I’m building a legacy and a lifestyle that isn’t bound by the constraints of traditional work. And honestly, seeing others succeed in this community makes me feel that I’m in exactly the right place to make it happen.
Looking forward to reading everyone else’s stories!
Welcome to the challenge Nicholas!
Your ‘why’ resonates with many of us I am sure. Creating a life that goes beyond the traditional 9-to-5 and really aligns with your personal values and family is something that I believe we are all after. Though the "day hours" fit into everyone's lives, we want to do something that we love, enjoy, and find fulfilling. The internet business world empowers all of us to do this.
Seeing others succeed here is hugely motivating, and your story is an inspiring reminder that we’re all in the right place to turn our visions into reality. Thanks for sharing your story, and here’s to building a life on your terms. :)
This is the first challenge I’ll be participating in lol.
The thing that motivated me to do this kind of business is the freedom. But not the freedom everyone seeks. I will give a bit of a backstory:
Since I was in my school days, I aways wanted to have my own business, and there is when I fist heard about Wealthy Affiliate. I didn’t had the money to buy a membership, but one December, I managed to read an email from Kyle, and there was the 50% first-time promotion for Premium. I decided to try, as I had a little money saved back then. I started a photography website, as I liked it. But after the first month, I was unable to continue and everything was lost.
My life continued like this as the years passed. I wasn’t the brightest person in the world, as I suffered from depression, I was inside some very serious addictions at the time, my relationship with my (then girlfriend) was terrible. With one word, I was broken from all sides. There was even times when I was searching the trees (I was living in a village) to find some apples to eat, as I didn’t had any money.
Then my future wife and I found the faith in God through one church that changed our entire lives. As we started to surrender our lives to God, everything changed. I stopped smoking, I stopped drinking alcohol, and my depression vanished completely. Our financial situation also changed, as we are now blessed with everything. Now, we both serve God that changed our entire lives.
1 and a half year ago I remembered about Wealthy Affiliate and decided to give it a shot again. But why an online business? Yes, it will give us a lot of freedom to travel, more time with my family, but the most important thing - the time and freedom to serve God and help other people change their lives, just like our lives were changed. There are a lot of people suffering in the world, and everyone deserves a good life. There is one thing I learned: God is not a religion, God is faith.
Thank for jumping into your first challenge Nikolay, good to see you here!
Also, thanks for sharing such a deeply personal and transformative path that has taken you here, and into the online world. It is definitely inspiring to see how you’ve turned your life around with faith, a good deal perseverance, and the support around you.
Thanks for sharing your whys!
I always been fascinated by all the ways to make money from the internet. I tried many times but without a lot of success, but I'm still trying because I love this.
But my big why is my family. I have three young kids (3, 5 and 8) and I would like to have more money and more time for them. Time is precious, so my goal is to work less, reduce stress, and truly enjoy more moments with my family.
Family is everything. I am in the same boat, they are my key driving force, but prior to having a family I suppose I was more motivated by creating a future for myself that didn't look like the norm and to do the things I loved, on my own will (which are represented in your whys as well). That is the luxury that the internet provides us all.
Thanks for sharing here Jonathan.
Yeah so, I'm lazy! I need something to keep me busy. Since I am newly retired, actually semi retired it has been a drastic change for me.
After owning my own commercial janitorial service for 30 years I worked many many long hours away from my family. I worked hard physically stripping and waxing tile floors, cleaning thousands and thousands square feet of carpet and I can't even count how many public toilets I cleaned night after night after night 6 to 7 days per week. I'm not boasting, but I flat out physically worked hard all those years.
My business was not large but large enough to babysit 5-6 employee's which added to a certain level of stress over the years. But I never quit! I wanted too many many days/nights and tried to find another profession many times. And yet the good Lord kept guiding me through the tough times. After a few years of looking for someone to take over my business I finally found someone I actually knew as another local cleaning company that I sold it pretty cheap to.
The not being constantly busy was and really is hard for me! I can't physically move as good as I ever used to and have problems with painful legs but I get around ok. Come the end of 2025 the money from the sale of the business will be gone - we are living on that income now. All my wife and I will have will be our SS which no one can live off of.
I HAVE to find something else to do from home and still stay busy enough to not just sit around watching the crap that is on TV. So, I remembered at one time many many years ago signing up for some website in regards to Affiliate Marketing and remember thinking back then that it was a great and simple business model. Unfortunately, I never stuck it out way back then but hind sight is 20/20. Here I am again giving it a more legitimate try and have all the time I need to make it work some day for us.
I could wallow in my sorrows but it's time to get to work again. Just not physically hard! I have to be able to mentally and technically learn a new skill that is difficult for me. Never been on social media much but I love the idea of working from home. In 12 months I better be well on my way to establishing a supplementation to our SS or we are going to be in trouble.
Thank you Kyle and Carson for providing a place for us to give it a legit try to develop an income from home. I think it is a legit business model and hopefully it works for us.
Haha, we all need to keep busy. I am certainly don't seem lazy, in particular when you have been given something to motivate you (like building an online business).
Thank you for sharing your story her Randy, your determination and work ethic are evident (though you may not think so). The next chapter can be a fun one and after three decades of hard work running a successful janitorial business, the transition to working from home is a big one (and fun one), and it sounds like you're ready to make it happen!
Learning a new skills can feel challenging and overwhelming, but that is a "comfort level" thing. When we are kids we don't have the choice whether or not to learn, so we just do it. As adults, we know "enough" so we have the luxury to sit on our laurels if we want, earn a living and never advance our knowledge beyond the expectation of our job.
We can all achieve much greater things though. You can learn this stuff, and you can thrive within the online world...and I look forward to seeing it take shape.
We’re all rooting for you, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes you!
When I started with WA back in 2014, my goal was to have a big website presence and I did not know how to do that.
I also wanted to relaunch an online business that I started in 2011 based on the RV niche.
My WHY was to help people so that when they were spending tens to hundreds of thousands dollars on an RV that they were making an educated choice and not purchasing a money pit.
That why plus my experience gained at WA helped me create a new industry, and with that much success.
In the early days of our business growth, clients success stories kept me motivated.
Helping people have safe and enjoyable travels with friends and family, while enjoying RV travel, and creating lasting memories, kept me moving forward.
Thank you for sharing your journey and your ‘why’ Howie, I know your story is an inspiring one. It's really cool to see how a clear purpose has driven you to create a whole new industry!
Creating memorable RV adventures is truly valuable work, and it’s clear your passion for this niche is driving your success. I just can't wait to see your site for "create success from an RV" so we can get you down in Vegas one of these years!
Thanks for sharing your why's, as always you contributions to the discussions are appreciated. :)

My Why For me, the motivation behind building an online business is both personal and deeply rooted in the desire for creative freedom and financial independence. Creating something from scratch that reflects my vision feels empowering, but it’s also about more than just autonomy. I love the idea of establishing something sustainable that will support not only my dreams but also provide value to others.
After years in the traditional workforce—where I spent a lot of time managing, marketing, and creating under someone else’s vision—I realized I was ready to pour my energy into something of my own. I wanted a venture where I could bring together my passion for art, design, and helping people while working on my terms. On tough days, when things get overwhelming, I remind myself of that dream of freedom: the ability to travel, connect with others, and live more fully. That vision keeps me moving forward, especially when things don’t go as planned.
Sharing and Supporting I’ll check out others' "why" stories! It’s inspiring to see how different people are driven by such varied motivations. Sometimes those shared stories are a reminder that we’re all on unique but intersecting paths.
Slayma, thank you for sharing such a brilliantly articulated ‘why’!
The drive to create something that reflects your vision and passion for art, design, and helping others is incredibly powerful. That is fulfilling as well. If you have fulfillment in your life, and it surrounds how you make money, it is the ideal combination.
Shifting from building under someone else’s vision to creating a business that’s truly yours is a journey filled with freedom, growth, and purpose.
Your dream of blending financial independence with creative freedom, travel and connectivity is what running and internet business is all about. Those are the luxuries it affords us.
It’s amazing to see you connecting with others' stories here, too; as you said, our paths may be unique, but they’re all driven by that desire to build something meaningful.
Thanks for sharing, awesome stuff here! :)
