Too Many Seasons, Too Many Keywords....

Have you ever had the problem where you are finding too many keywords? So many in fact that you are unsure you know will ever have time to ever “tackle” the marketing aspect of them?

Many of you are probably nodding your heads right now (likely many Jaaxy users), but some of you may think I am crazy to insinuate that keyword research is this easy. This leads me to a single problem...

Most people overthink the keyword market!

If you are having trouble finding keywords, you are putting too much thought into the keyword research process. You know the old saying KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Apply this to keyword research.

In particular, if you consider all of the seasonal events that take place throughout the year. Yes, there are niches. But then there are seasonal events, some happen every year, some happen many times per year, and some happen once ever few years.

Think of all the yearly holidays, think of all the product launches across many industries (iPhone 5 anyone), think of the Olympics and the World Cup. Seasonal events happen frequently, they lead to high volumes of traffic, and they lead to a lot of people making a lot of money.

Take us back to 2006, an unbelievable event happened!

Many of you have probably heard of the World Cup. It is the largest watched event in the world with close to a billion people tuning in when it starts every 4 years. This is a pretty massive audience wouldn’t you say.

There is one common problem that people were having during the world cup was that they really wanted to watch the games, but the games were typically during working hours. They were seeking out solutions and services that would allow the to watch the world cup online.

Guess what we did. We created some content around these search terms, we actually advertised them in Google and then sent people to services (through affiliate programs) that allowed them to watch the world cup online. The results were shocking. We were earning on some of the more popular games over $60 per minute. PER MINUTE. PEEEERRRRRR MINUTTTEE. Freakin’ insanity.

And these keywords were everywhere. Here was one of the popular ones...

“Watch Fifa World Cup 2006 online”

To this day, that keyword only has 11 competition. This proves my point of the limited competition at that time. 6 years later. 11 competing pages under one of the more popular terms. Pretty crazy!

People were looking to watch specific games. In fact, some of our top converting search terms were related to people searching terms like:

“watch usa vs. portugal online”
“usa versus portugal world cup 2006”

There were literally 1,000’s of variations and each and ever day there were new matches that could be leverage....and leverage them we did. Think of every game and every variation. When all was said and done we took home a pretty good “affiliate” income from the World Cup!

But we don’t care about the 2006 World Cup, we care up the ones that haven’t happened yet that you can and will be able to monetize.

You are concerned about the upcoming world cups.

The one in 2014 and maybe even the one in 2018! This is what I like to call being ahead of the competition. Now is a perfect time to get some rankings, to pick up some awesome domains, and to really create footprints in a popular event that ONE BILLION people will be watching.

And this is not the only event, there are 10’000’s of events that take place every year and are very cyclical in nature. Halloween, Christmas, New Years (and a ton of resolutions), Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Tax Season, Summer, Spring, Fall...

I could go on and on for hours.

So today I wanted to spur your thinking. Keywords are not just for niches. They are for seasons, events, and all of the FUTURE seasons.

Honestly, there are too many seasons and too many keywords to be able to tackle them all and I think that if you put a bit of research into this you are going to find the same!

Great post Kyle!! Keywords are all around us, thanks for sharing the long term planning, needed to be reminded of that :)

Exactly and so are domains (whoops, I said it)!

lol

KISS! So true for us new starters, we're so desperately trying to think of "That Perfect" keyword we can get lost in the very process.
Keep It Simple Stupid!
Indeed

You only find the perfect keywords through volume. The more keywords you get ranked for and the more keywords you try, the better the chance of landing a whale.

this is inredible and so simple, a real advert for "KISS", there is a lot to take in here, but at the same time, there isn't. Something you could say about IM is "you have to work hard, but the work you have to do isn't hard"

also, 84,000 dollars a day?!!

It wasn't quite that much but it is was a LARGE amount! The $60/minute were during peak hours and it did not remain that high throughout the entire day.

a man can dream though :)

For many companies that number is a reality :) Perhaps one day...

Excellent (and thought provoking post) Kyle. It's actually given me an idea to do a follow-up post in response to this one.

Cool, would love to read it Adi!

Excellent post Kyle. I was actually doing some research into this myself the other week. Have a couple good ones in mind, it's just hunting down some good, appropriate, affiliate program's to go with them now

They are never ending! There are so many opportunities like this that you will have to start throwing away all of your "extra" ideas as there simply is not enough hours in the day.

Cannot agree more. Really having to curb some ideas as I'll be spreading myself too thin. One project at a time!

Exactly, any SINGLE project can turn out to become a huge revenue stream. It doesn't take 10 sites to create a successful business, it only takes one. Just remember that.

Thanks - the juices in my brain are beginning to flow - Colin

No problem Colin, glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you Kyle, your post is always a wake up call. I actually did start something about the New Year, but then drop it. With this, at least I now know it was a right thing to do.

Yeah, for sure. Lots of opportunity in this market and I am going to expand upon this in the coming weeks.

Great stuff, Kyle. Love all the ideas that I get here.

No problem Scott, glad I could get the juices flowing!

Thank you so much, Kyle... will put it to work... earning and sharing never ends here... love it!

Glad I could give you some insight into new strategies! :)

Hi Kyle
This is interesting. I never have trouble finding keywords, but I know a lot of people do.

I do think ahead - I started on Christmas for 2012 back in March, but I hadn't thought about looking so far ahead at some of the events. Yet another thing to think about
Thanks

Now is a good time to start on Xmas 2013! :)
