Latest news - Google ranking by 'truth'?

This morning (11th March 2015) I read that Google is considering ranking websites by how truthful the facts are! This was discussed in a research paper published by Google in February 2015 and reported by New Scientist magazine. A team of computer scientists at Google has proposed a way to rank search results not by how popular Web pages are but by their factual accuracy.

While this is theoretical at the moment as it is not a product announcement, it is mind boogling to think how they would do it. It would obviously need a fact database to be the reference point for the truth. However unless this database covers everything since the universe begun, one can only began to imagine how websites ranking will be affected!

Interesting, Kummy, thank you for sharing, I am interested to know. :)

wow, interesting! thanks for sharing!

You are Welcome! Truth is sometimes grey depending on whose side you are on!

That's very true!

That is scary. At the end of the day what is truth? Everything we know has come from someone before us and who knows if they were telling the truth at the time. The only thing presumably concrete is discovered scientifically and even that is sometimes based on assumptions.

The world and the internet has gone mad.
Lis.

Totally - for instance 'nature' versus 'nurture' debate on why we are how we are!

Interesting idea. As the article points out, the knowledge database will grow over time as Google determines what is fact and what is not. When articles are opinion, they would have to determine if the opinion is based on a fact and then compare to that fact.

This would be quite an undertaking. When I think of what Google already has in place and what Amazon knows about all of us and our buying habits (let alone other personal information), this isn't beyond their reach.

This is very deep and as you say mind boggling. Thanks for sharing

I can't see how that would work for a large portion of the internet. They would probably segment it into applicable sites. If they do go that road - more Google Slaps ahead! (For some, not for those of us who stick to the facts :-P )

I agree with you. i wonder what would happen when things are contentious like 'that dress'? Is it blue and black or white and gold? :-)

Oh my gosh that whole thing is a perfect example of "what is Truth" - because I've seen pictures where it's white and gold, and pictures where it's blue and black, and supposed eye witness testimony - and I've come to the conclusion that they are ALL wrong, and it's really rainbow sparkle unicorn hair fabric. >.<

Yeah - I was looking at the same picture of the dress with others at the same time and we saw different. Does Google have 'eyes? :-)
