Writer's Block: the enemy

We all have days when we can’t seem to find the words to bring our content to life. Those days are rough: you just want to get your ideas out, but you can’t make the words come together!

First thing to do: don’t stress! We have deadlines, I get that. But stressing about it will absolutely not help in any shape or form. If anything, stressing about it will only cause the writer’s block to worsen.

Number two: do something else. Sometimes, our minds just need a break from the current task because it’s been overloaded. Take this time to read a book, watch a movie, meditate or write in your personal journal (if you keep one).

Writing in your journal may sound counter-intuitive: you’re already having difficulties writing content, so how is this any different? But it'll actually make you more productive! It’ll serve to help clean the clutter out of your brain. I know that’s what it does for me; who's to say it won't work for you. Sometimes, our thoughts are just all over the place, we need to let it all out and see it from a new perspective. Now that the obstructive thoughts have been banished from our minds, we can think more clearly about the topic we want to share with the world.

Three: you could be hungry. Being hungry affects our concentration, which in turn affects our ability to write. Go eat and come back to your work.

Four: maybe you’re going stir crazy. You could have just been spending too much time indoors. Go outside, get some fresh air. If you want, take your laptop, notebook, notepad (whatever you use to write out your ideas) and do your work in a different setting (ie. coffee shop, park, or public library).

And lastly: if none of the previous suggestions helped, then maybe you’re just exhausted and should probably go to sleep. Tomorrow will be a new day and your mind will be fresh after a good night’s sleep (…or morning…or afternoon…just sleep).

Nice on Krystle

Thanks.

Thanks, great suggestions Krystle

You're welcome! =)

Hi Krystle, writes block is quite common. For me, I take a break for a day or so and them return to the task at hand. Irv.

That's always a great tactic to use to help with writer's block. =)

I am in my 6th week and have not written one blog. My excuse is I am on holiday in Africa at the moment and have switched off from any social media.
I am aware that I have a lot of catching up to do, my grandchildren come first. I have not seen them in a long time. I have lots of ideas about my forthcoming blogs so all is not lost. I just pick up where I left off.

Being on vacation is reasonable; I would spend time with my family that I haven't seen in a long time as opposed to just being stuck in my work. Glad to know you're having a wonderful time! And great picture!

I recently told something like this to someone who had writer's block
"...do a little something everyday and gradually work your way up, that's how you will get out of your slump - .start writing short comments, ask questions...".

Perhaps I left something out before this......

Relax. Get away from everything, the reading and writing, etc....do something FUN that you really enjoy for 2-3 days. Even one week. Think about those experiences. Write a short blog post about it, or something you normally would never blog about.

Perhaps even write a blog post about IT - why you think you are in a slump. To a small degree, you already started that here.

Then gradually ease back into things.

Yup; sometimes, you just really need to get away from things. Forcing yourself to write something will only result in you writing mediocre content; and that's not something that anyone wants to do.

It's already a week I haven't posted one. It seems to be a dead end.

That's unfortunate. But maybe you just needed a week break! =)

Just start writing out your thoughts. It gives you something to focus on. It's easier to organize them later as you have raw material to work with that wasn't there before!

I agree!

I agree. I have to take breaks sometimes. Leave it and come back. Sometimes you don't know what the writer's block is. After a bit of time away, returning with a clear head can get you going again.

Yup! That's what happens to me; sometimes, I'm doing something completely different, then the words just hit me!
