Old Friends
There is something comforting about putting on your favourite old sweatshirt or t-shirt and jeans etc. The same can be said of seeing old friends... If you were lucky enough to have the right friendships - Its almost as if there was never any time missed from the last time you saw them!
We used to live in a small community where everyone knew everyone else and once or twice a summer we would have street parties or BBQ's. Along the way we became quite close with our neighbours across the street. They had older kids and we had younger kids. Their kids were in university or already out in the workforce while our kids had not even got through grade school! But for some reason it didn't seem to matter and our friendship seemed to cross the borders of normalcy - we didn't have a ton in common except we had each others back.
You see we live in an environment where the winters are tough and snow is plentiful and when I was done shovelling my driveway I would saunter on over to take care of the neighbours driveways too. Sometimes in the summer we would help each other cut the grass...sometimes we would spend time chatting at the end of the driveway and yet other times we would slide around to the backyard for a glass of wine (or two...)
As the years went by the six of us (three couples) would go out for dinners, BBQ's and small gatherings at someone's house. Eventually for health reasons one couple moved to the city. Next it was my wife and my turn, again for health reasons, to move to the city away from "Leave-it-to-Beaver-land". Yet still we tried to keep in touch. The frequency is not near as often but the feelings are still the same! It always feels good, comforting almost - just like how you feel when you put on your favourite whatever!
Tonight was one of those nights - we've had months go by without seeing or talking with each other but it doesn't seem to matter - its as if we were still just across the street from one another! It felt good and we will all take the time to reflect on yet another great evening. Here's hoping that everyone has these kind of friends - if you do count yourself as being very lucky indeed!

Kevin I really like your story. Yes with true friends , no matter the time that has lapsed , you just seem to pick up where you left off and catch up. Great isn't it?
Real friends are hard to come by these days. Great old friends are even more rare and I think that is why we usually have only a few of them.
Love to here about, such friendships, I lost one of my best girlfriends I think it was because her husband did a bad proposal to me, I kicked him out, but eversince, our friendship is cut of, she does not want to talk with me, I don't know what he told her, think not very nice things, I keep it that way, because if she was a true friend, she would know me better. Nicely written. Sometimes we are lucky enough to have that living experience. And then life changes so we have another experience, yet that tight-knit experience comes at just the right time in our lives. It's pleasant to think back on those days and how it helped to bring us where we are today. Thanks for the reflection
