I signed up and filled in all the information for payment etc. At that point, I did a product search on the associates home page and hit get link on the products that I wanted to promote.

Amazon gives you a 90 day trial period where they will allow you to use the associates program while they see if your website is suitable. Then you have to make 3 sales within 180 days to stay in the program. And that was it. Just use your personal associate link for the products that you chose on your website.

If you are just starting with your website, I would recommend you publish atleast 5 pages or posts on the site before you start monetizing.

When you say associate home page meaning ...Wealthy Affiliates are Amazon site or my own.com site.?

The Amazon Home page is where you get individual product links or you can create recommended add that will place the native ad on your pages. My native ads show just before my comment area.
