"Just do it already!"
Hi everyone! I'm Kathrin and I've been a member here for about 6 weeks. This is my first blog post here and it's kind of ironic, that I'm writing this today, when I've been struggling with major writer's block, when it comes to my own site.
Have you had one of those days, where you get up in the morning determined to write one of those 1000-worders and then you end up... well... doing anything but that? I'm having one of those days today. So far, I've probably checked Google Analytics, what feels like 50 times, looked at the statistics in my Amazon Associates account and played around with different settings on my theme. What I haven't done though, is write a single word. Although this is the one thing, that really needs to get done.
I keep telling myself "Just do it already!" and then end up staring at the blinking cursor on a blank page again for 10 minutes before my brain wanders off and I find something else to do.
And then I think about the amount of content I need to write for my site and it almosts feels overwhelming. So much to do... and yet... I'm struggling and it feels like I'm not getting anything done.
Do you all have days like this sometimes? How do you overcome writer's block?

In my opinion, there is no such thing as writer's block. We are just preoccupied with other thoughts, distracted by our environment or we simply don't know what to write and keep putting it off. Happens to me all the time.
To get around it here are a few things that work for me:
- Try to sort out what is bothering you.
- Stop forcing yourself to write something when you clearly don't want or cannot do it.
- Make a plan. Think first about what you want to write. Build a skeleton and then put some meat onto the bones.
- Just write. Funny enough this helps quite often. I just start writing and I don't care how good or relevant it is. More often than not something useful will come out of it. By producing "junk" you subconsciously start to define your project and suddenly things become a lot clearer.
- Listen quietly to music. Preferably without words like classical music, jazz or whatever type of music works for you.
- Remove distractions like email or social media.
- There are good and less good times in the day to write. Find out when you are most productive and reserve the time for your projects (if possible).
- Don't drink too much caffeine, especially coffee. Try green or white teas. The caffeine in tea stimulates your central nervous system and helps to focus without getting jumpy.
- Already said in previous comments: Write as good and as much as you can, leave it, do something else and come back to it later or the next day. Works wonders.
- It always helps to write about something you are interested in. Boring financial writing is as painful to read is it is to write.
- Don't get hung up on the word count. I know that everybody here tells you to write as much as you can but I believe in quality, not quantity. If your post has "only" 600 words but it reads well and makes the point, so be it.
- Above all: give yourself time to develop your rhythm and skills. Rome wasn't built in one day.
I did not know how many tricks I knew to get me writing. It clearly shows that you are not alone.
Happy writing.
Martin
Congrats on your first blog Kathrin!
I think the first blog was already 500-600 words (I guess). So it's not that hard once you started to hit the ideas. The number of words will fit in naturally.
Minimum wordpress post should be 350 words. There are evidence to show that longer post ranked better but only if the content is good in the eyes of uncle G.
I would suggest start with 350 - 500 - 750 - 1000 and without you monitoring the no of words and write naturally as you hit more ideas into your content, you'll be writing 1,500 words easily.
Write naturally is key. And you can always go back to the old post and edit more content as you have new ideas. So your 350 words post will be more dynamic and uncle G loves posts that are always updated from time to time.
All the best.
Joe
Thanks for those helpful tips! Yes. I think just making sure I hit the 350 and then taking it from there expanding the articles will really help me!
Yes 1000 words is so hard sometimes for me too. In my chosen niche, it is actually hard. Not much to say till I get 1000 all the time. I just write a few hundred and continue next time when I have ideas. Sometimes I will just post it first, add words later .
I see some websites do not have a lot of words but they get into the first page. It has more pictures than words. Look at wikihow. They have little words. A lot of images. Valuable and helpful content. They got into first page of Google all the time.
Is the 1000 words really compulsory thing?
I don't think it's compulsary, but Google seems to like it. Especially when you're starting a new site it's an advantage I think.
I do the same. Sometimes I just write less, hoping for inspiration another day. Some content is better than no content, right?!
Yep- I definitely have those days! You are not alone. I feel like I have to find a topic to write about that I really know and understand before it's easy for me to whip up a 1,000 word article about.
I have started jotting down ideas throughout the week that come to mind or that I may see online. Then I try to pick one and start researching it, even if it's just for a little bit each day. I just jot down a few phrases about what I have learned. Within a few days, I can go back and realize I have quite a bit listed and can then start to organize those ideas and start to turn them into full sentences/paragraphs. This has been the most helpful method I have found when I'm having writer's block. Not sure if that will be helpful for you or not but I thought I would share.
Thanks for sharing your process, Heidi! Those are some really useful tips! Glad to hear I'm no the only one!
Hello Kath,
Welcome to Wealthy Affiliate and congratulations for your first WA blog post.
Cheers!!
Hello I am for a sure a newbie to all of this , but i will strive to make great progress . I am a person who loves writing especially poetry! so what do i do when i get blocked in my mind , I think about every single moment in my life and I write from my heart , because the best words come from within , its like music and how it speaks to us in many ways , I feel like every time i turn on radio the music is reflecting exactly whats happening in my life ironic i know but it happens every single time !!!. So being with music and memories they tend to make all the words I want to say just jump off the page , I can tell by how much you put into writing what you just did , you have a voice and your own thoughts , why not express them , very first thing that comes to your mind, that's what i would blog about , a blog does not always have to reflect the website it can also reflect the person who made the site , best of luck hunni !!
Thank you for the encouragement, BillyJeanCha! You're right. I should just get writing. Write anything. Get in the habit of it again. And hopefully it'll get easier. I'll try!
