Wasting Time: A National Pasttime

If wasting time was an Olympic event most Americans would win a gold medal!

We all take time for granted, the very affluent, the middle class, and those people stuck in the endless poverty cycle. Wasting time has been inculcated into our very culture and accepted with open arms by most of the American people.

Our citizens are leading the world when it comes to abusing alcohol and drugs, playing video games, talking on the phone, watching TV, playing sports, watching sports and spending large amounts of time relaxing from what they consider a stressful life.

In fact, watching sports has become a national epidemic!

We watch players earning millions of dollars hit that home run, catch that football, make that basket, catch that hockey puck, while we waste time drinking, cheering and getting fatter.

Americans do this they say because they are stressed out and need relaxation. Why is this the only way to relax... this wasting of precious time? When did it become stressful to work at a hobby, read a good book, study a new language, work at a business, or better your way of life by volunteering?

Fulfilling one's life through watching the successes of other people through sports, TV programs and movies has always made me feel empty. I do enjoy watching baseball after achieving my goals for the day.

I hear families complaining about money, the stress of paying the bills and putting children through college. Yet, they waste most of their precious time on empty pursuits instead of working hard to achieve their dreams. These empty pursuits drive them deeper into despair and hopelessness.

Why can't hard work make someone happy and how can pursuing a dream be stressful?

In the 1900's 9 out of 10 Americans owned their own businesses and worked hard at them. Today only one out of 10 Americans own their own business. We are all created equal, but we do not get equal results because some people just plain work harder than others. If you're not living a wonderful life in the most free and prosperous country in the world take a look in the mirror. You're probably wearing an Ohio State Buckeye shirt, wearing a Cleveland Indians hat, or Dallas Cowboys shirt!

Become your own cheerleader for you and your family...get off the couch and into the arena and get your fair share of the financial pie by earning it!

I agree with you! I actually enjoy working on starting my own business or figuring out how we can afford to buy a house in my free time. I also enjoy many other hobbies like gardening and photography.

I do watch TV but I mostly watch shows that teach me something I can apply in real life like cooking, or documentaries about topics I enjoy. I also pay attention to local and national events so I know how I want to vote in the next election! I can't stand soap operas that are just the worst waste of time imaginable! I don't watch any sports except the Olympics.

If people could find enjoyment in learning how to improve their lives they would come out ahead.

Very true but being a fellow Marine vet I understand the importance of hard work and determination. I learned it in the Marine Corps at an early age. Most Americans dont take up on that opportunity so those core values are rarely used. Thats why its the few and proud.

I really like this Post. I want my new clowns that come to my site to see that it takes that time to do things creative and productive.

This is a great post!

LOVE this post. Well done!

Bread and circuses. The politicians' way of leading the masses around by the nose.

Hi I know exactly what you mean getting pretty much like that over here in the UK.

People have never got time, which is usually crap and just a state of mind. Work 9-5 then watch TV 6-8.

I tend to watch a little news every now and again (Mostly repeats, Ha!) and then record tv shows, If not watched it within a couple of weeks it gets deleted.

People just need to learn to connect with life again it's still there for the taking!

Dave

The tone is a bit harsh but people need to wake up!

See my own blog of today if you want a bit of encouragement.

God bless you!
