Jess Recuperating From Her Amputation

Hi All WA friends,

Jess went in to the vets yesterday for surgery on her infected toe bone, the vet thinks it is cancer. So only one thing we could do, get the toe bone amputated and hope that there is no further spread of cancer elsewhere.

Jess came home last night, still under the influence of the anesthetic, I had to try and lift her out of the car onto the driveway, 45kg she weighs !!!

Anyway managed to get her in the house, she immediately went out in the back garden desperate for the toilet, bless her. You could see she just wasn't with it, her eyes were half shut and very blood shot.

All we could do was try and make her as comfortable as possible, Jess just wanted to lie down and not move she was very drowsy. We hand fed some chicken breast for her to eat which she loved and gave her some water.

Now and again she would cry in pain, but there was nothing else we could do to stop the pain. She is on Metacam and pain killing tablets to try and ease the pain and discomfort, I stayed up with her till 1.30am UK time because she hates being on her own.

Our latest boy edition to the family, Kass is keeping Jess company on the floor.

During the night, Jess was sick, but we expected this with everything she has been through in the last 24 hours. The other 2 rotties are brilliant and don't bother her.

She has to return to the vets tomorrow morning, for the dressing to be changed. The poor girl may have to be sedated yet again, if she wont let the vet near her paw. This would be out of character for Jess as she loves everybody.

No dog walks for quite a few weeks for her, and we must not let her dressing get wet, plastic bag or cling film required to cover her dressing before being allowed outside.

Jess is in a lot of pain which is very sad and upsetting to see her like that, but we had no alternative, as the cancer would have spread 100% if we did nothing. For her sake I hope this amputation of her toe bone has stopped the spread, the bone has been sent off for analysis. But with cancer you never know, it can attack any time.

Getting her pain free and coming on walks again would be fantastic, enjoying what time she has left with us is all that matters. Remember she is a very old girl, for a rottie at 11 years old. The vet bill was nearly a 4 figure sum but we didn't care how much it was going to cost, her health and well being matters most.

Hope you are looking forward to your weekend and the weather treats you well, in whatever you plan on doing.

Thank you,

That is so sad to see her like that John. I know you must be so worried about her. Hopefully it heals and then all will be well again.

It makes me think about declawing animals and how cruel it is. Imagine if she had all her toe bones cut off (that is what they do when they declaw!) at once! No wonder they have problems for the rest of their lives!

Good for you for taking such great care of your dogs! It is so wonderful to see pet parents who take their obligations so seriously. I hope she gets better soon.
Jessica

Thank you, Jessica.

I did not know about declawing, sounds barbaric. I am worried because if this is confirmed as cancer, when the bone is analysed this disease has a habit or recurring elsewhere.
Anyway Jess is in a good place being very well looked after and comforted, although very sore and in pain.
Hoping she can get well at the earliest opportunity.

John

Awww poor Jess, hope she is coping a bit better tonight John and that she didn't have to be sedated again to get the dressing changed. I also hope that the news you get back from the bone analysis is not a bad as you think. xx

Thank you, Cheryl.

She gets her dressing changed tomorrow (Saturday morning), but will worry until the result of the bone analysis returns. Jess has been sleeping most of today which is good for her.

John

She looks like such a sweetie! I hope she heals quickly.

Thank you, Suzanne.

She really, really is a sweetie, Jess loves being cuddled by everyone. She rested well today.

John

Ahhh! Just ensure she is kept well with prayers, company and love. Do everything you can to reinforce her mobility and recovery!

Thank you, Mike.

She is getting all the love and companionship, my wife or I is sitting with her, Jess hates being on her own.

John

Great job John!!. If you have compassion for Jess, as an animal, how much more wouldn't you have for a person in need.
May God bless you!!!
And a good recovery for Jess.
Daniel

Thank you, Daniel.

Any animal you own means we as owners, have the responsibility to get them the professional help to make them well again.

John

I hope she can be pain free!
I stay broke from vet bills too but we want them to have the care they need to be well and happy.

Thank you, Linda.
Yes our bill was just under £1,000.00 but immaterial to the well being of your dog.

John

Poor thing:(. I hope she has a speedy recovery:). Pets are really like our children in so many ways:)
Blessings:)
Suzi

Thank you, Suzi.

This house will be an empty place without the dogs, she is not so drowsy today. But Jess is sleeping most of the day still which will do her good.

John

Oh, good:). She needs to rest in order to heal:)

Give Jess all my love and hugz.

Hugz for you whole family

Thank you, Sunday.

Jess is getting all the love in the world.

John

Wayne

Thank you, Wayne.

She will be desperate to go on dog walks again with her 2 pals, just hope she gets the all clear in a few weeks.

John
