First WA Website - Home Page Problems

Finally bit the proverbial bullet tonight and bought/set-up my first WA Website. I say WA Website, specifically, because this is by-far not my first website to be built. I have had a personal design portfolio site for years and build sites regularly as part of my day-job. However, this is the first one that I am building specifically for marketing/affiliate purposes.

The process was easy enough; I purchased my domain name through NameCheap.com (LeatherCraftingForBeginners.com for those curious) and set up the DNS to my WA Hosting account. I've tentatively chosen a very basic WordPress Theme, and have a few ideas as to modifications I'm likely going to make to the theme structure once I get the site more stable and I have some more time to tweak things (perks of being a webdesigner - if I don't find a theme I like, I make my own.)

The problem I'm having at the moment is putting content on the main homepage. Don't get me wrong - I know my topic; I just cannot figure out how to put into words what I want to say about it for the basic welcome / home page.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any tips on getting over the writers' block hurdle here and getting something up that doesn't look / sound like meandering babble?

I have had no experience with the "fiverr" site but you might want to see what they can offer you for $5. Let me know if you did or not & if so...what were your results? THX Larry freedomforus

I agree with the gang. One thing I learned from the tutorials, put something on paper, act and plan on returning later to edit and improve. My problem was trying to be perfect the first time out of the box. Good luck.

Hi - Put yourself in the place of a first time customer landing on your site and think what they would want to know immediately eg

1. What is the site about ...
2. Who's it for ....
3. What 'problems' can you solve...
4. What benefits will they find ...

Make sure that you text includes 'you' and 'your' - not loads of 'I's

I would also look at any similar sites (though I know you've said these are limited) just to see what they are saying. It might give you some inspiration.

Hope this helps

Beverley

I like this. Be sure you're not offending your customer though. Using the word "You" sometime make the reader want to put up there guard & go defensive. Don't let that confuse you though.

I agree with Thomas, having been where you are. Take a break, maybe overnight, take a walk or busy yourself with something entirely different and you should find that your mind will relax and start to come up with ideas which you should note down straight away or risk losing them, good luck,

This seems counter intuitive but you might want to get away from the computer and out of the house. Grab a notebook and take it with you. Then write the content for your homepage in your notebook. Sometimes I find it easier to write something in a notebook than typing it up on the computer.

Hey jmkoontz,

You're learning that. That's understandable. You have a lot of experimentation & action taking yet to be taken to really have a firm grasp of knowing what you need to do to dominate the search engines for your specific niche, create strong traffic flow, and build your site into something that can really be reckoned with. Of course the main goal of all of this is to create sales, aside from helping other people online find what they need in an efficient & effective manner.

Your web designing skills will be an asset to you regardless when it comes to php coding of the website, tweaking your site to be more audience friendly, & many more techie related things for creating an awesome website people will love & enjoy to visit.

My Suggestion:

Do mainly what comes natural to you. Structure your website in a way that suits you to the point to where you can effectively relate to your audience and display the message you're trying to convey across. Use your own creativity, thinking, and constantly improve your website to the expectations that you have planned for it.

Aside from that, I normally try to keep it as simple as possible. You could try throwing up a page for products you're advertising, or even a drop down menu, and have this page displayed alongside About Us. Within the About Us page, you could have a link to the Privacy Policy page so as not to display it among the menu bar (some of your audience might freak out if they see a complicated page with a bunch of big words & hard to understand ideal sets oriented towards the lawful trade of goods via internet).

Then I suggest writing down categories that suit your blog well (choose wisely what categories you use for your website) and display these categories on your website. Then submit mainly posts on your website afterwards. Also, try and keep the widget area clean of adsense, pictures, flashy things, other things to slow down your website, and a bunch of other junk. People don't appreciate it when they visit a webpage with 4 different Google adsense flash banners on the footer, 3 videos on the side bar, and pop-up window to top it off. It's mainly a matter of effectively engaging your audience and creating a positive environment for your customers.

Good luck.
