Progress Post #1 - Month 1 of WA membership.

[Journaling my progress from day 1 on Wealthy Affiliate]

So I started a personal blog years ago, tinkering around on the internet (actually I created several). As usual, this blog got absolutely no attention and I eventually abandoned it.

Recently, it dawned on me that the reason I abandon blogs is because I have unrealistic expectations going into it. I'm writing with the hopes that someone reads it. I mean, naturally, you don't speak to a crowded room and feel good when the entire room ignores you. But I didn't do anything to get there attention, I basically started talking to myself in the corner or a crowded room.

I learned a few valuable lessons that I thought were worth sharing.

1. Traffic doesn't just happen because you write

2. Focus on ONE traffic source, not all of them

3. Expect to slowly build, don't expect some influx of activity

4. Stop focusing on the tools and start focusing on the trade

5. Create an actual relationship with your followers, learn from them

"Like any carpenter, it's not the saw, it's the wisdom of the individual."

I was 'SOLD' the saws for a while... now I know better.

So I dusted off and rekindled this old blog this month, since I joined WA and something odd happened.

It was a free blog, so I upgraded, added some plugins, changed the url and decided that Facebook would be my sole traffic provider that I'm going to focus on first. I cleaned it up a lot [that was key, more on that later].

I've tried to do everything at once and overwhelm always sets me back and discourages me.

Facebook:

Since I'm short on time, I'll just say that buying facebook promo's was crazy awesome, completely worth it. I am looking right into the living rooms of my followers. I can see HOW to sell to them. What they're talking about. I can even switch over to my personal account and become real friends with them. Talk about rapport building!

I've got 108 followers as of this morning and I started with 14 on Monday morning, today is Wednesday. That's less than 3 full days. I can barely keep up. I'm writing this at 10:45am Wed and I bought the url on Monday morning at 5am...(I'm writing from my day job desktop, oops, sshhh)

This is definitely a sign of improvement.

...I'll add more soon....stay tuned. Gotta go...

Great post Jay,Makes a lot of sense:)

Thanks Jaz! Did you graduate already? Have a business going?

Yes i graduated in June, I'm going through affiliate bootcamp and am in the process of building my website. Have a great weekend Jay

interesting!

Thanks! I finally see something that moves the needle, and it had nothing to do with writing, it was about people connecting.

erm, actually it was what you wrote connected us - you are teaching us here - this stuff seems so basic to you, but I'm learning reading your stuff, I'm not so much into 'connection' for me that is more of a bonus :D

Great post, Jay! I'm in the process of fixing up and rekindling an old blog, too. In fact, I wrote a post on it last night. Please keep in mind this is my personal blog that I get to say whatever I want on there. LOL Now to get some ads up. http://oldbustedhotness.com/2014/09/aarp-announces-tablet-design-baby-boomers/

I see you have adsense and facebook comments on there. Do you make an money with adsense? And do people interact on the fb comments? It's kind of hard to break through the first comment, I think... maybe I'm just not that interesting... people seem to comment the heck out of blogs I like to read, just not mine... yet ... Maybe it takes thousands of readers to get regular comments.

I've made a few dollars with Adsense. I'm going to work on that. Not so sure about FB. I'll have to take a look. Someone else built that site for me. There's a lot of crap on it I don't understand, but I WILL. Comments are hard to come by. I used to have people email me comments instead of leaving them on the site. Not sure why. I have to start writing and promoting it regularly. That should help.

Good advice. Thanks

Thanks Rick.
I wonder if you could have some success helping others with your same symptoms online. Do you do that?

Thanks, Jay. Yes. I am trying that first (at least here). Are you teaching your son guitar in the pic? Cool! My brother lost his Taylor via his son, though, so be careful.

haha! yeah that's how i learned, i confiscated my moms 12 string. leaving a legacy lol the sacrifices we make for our children.
