I am trying to find out more about this: how things are nowadays? Is it worth to do something about it and if yes, what can I do?

Yes, what you need to do is contribute to websites that have high ranking and authority so that they will link back to your site. This not only gives you a backlink but adds to your website's authority. Not easy to do but this is what the experts I read have written as the best process.

I agree with Dale. You'll build better credibility if you let them use the chosen door instead of a 'hidden' back door.

You don't want to create backlinks that aren't natural. Google will flag them as spammy and it may get your URL blocked on Google. Quality content as Dale said, and if you can find guest blogging opportunities, you can sometimes ask to include your link in the blog.

Natural is the best way to do it - create quality content, share it as best as you can & let people link back to your site by choice :)
