Who Are You?

So many of us come to Wealthy Affiliate and start the training process as instructed. One of the first few things we are asked to do is to put a picture in your profile and share a little about yourself.

I am Upset!

I want to know who I am conversing with when I respond to a question or a blog post. I feel cheated when I go to someone's profile and I get a one-liner that someone shares about themselves or why they are here at Wealth Affiliate. Is that all you are about? We are a family here of like-minded people looking to develop online businesses, and we need each other!

Also, I love responding to new people who join the ranks. But I find it frustrating when I have to search for their name, so I can respond with their name, not "xyz10286." What is up with names like that?

Online Security and Anonymity!

Okay, I get it. You don't want people to know who you really are as their are so many fraudulent activities going on in the online world, right? Never fear! Supermen are here, and their names are Kyle and Carson, the co-owners of Wealthy Affiliate. They have your back. We are safe! They will quickly eradicate any would-be attacker! Okay, a little dramatic but mostly true. They have put many safety measures in place to protect us and our websites that are hosted here.

Please Update Your Profile!

I see people who have been here for years, and I don't see any updates about their progress here in Wealthy Affiliate. We all need to read those great things you have to sahre! It inspires others to greatness. Everyone should update their activities at least once a year, don't you think?

So, All of You Go Update Your Profile!

Please add your name if you don't have it their so I can address you as such and not have to go look for Kyle's intro message to your membership to find out who you are. It really does take extra time for me to address you properly. You see, I am just that kind of guy. I want to call you by name. Okay, we'll let you slide with a nickname if you feel you need to.

Also, please update your profile description and let us know how your life here in Wealthy Affiliate is going. It helps us all out when we get referrals who are checking out the platform to read all the great stories I know you all have.

Will you join me in being more diligent with this? Will you let your referrals know to do the same as well?

Thanks for stopping by!

Howard

You have made a great point. I am old school and like to know who I am addressing. It would also be interesting to know what part of the world someone is in.

Thanks for stopping by my blog Ray!

Hey Howard.
What a good point to be made. I know I am one of those that needs to do this. It was in the back of my mind and I guess it got lost. Anyways thanks for the reminder I will get to it shortly.

Thanks for stopping by Melissa and sharing. We look forward to the update!

You are very welcome and thank you

Hello Howard,
Like you I prefer to speak to people on a personal basis which is not very easy with some.
I have just added my first month's views to my profile.

Derek

Awesome Derek!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your one-month update! Glad to hear WA has helped you so much in that short time period.

I agree with that

Hi Howard, I too like to address people by name, and often go to Kyle's welcome message for that info. I am happy to give people my first name but, am still a little wary of giving my surname firstly for security, and secondly because what I do online, at this point, I don't wish to share with some people in my life!
I promise you, I will update my profile at the 12 month mark and I will post a real photo instead of a tree, lol. Now I have a question?
When you update your profile, do you delete what's there and write a new one, or do you add on to the one that's already there?
Thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny!

Thanks for checking in!

I leave my previous posts and continue to add the new ones so people can see the progression of events from the time I started at WA till now.

Hopefully, for most, it shows continual improvement.

Thanks Howard, have a great weekend.
Jenny

You too! Have a blessed Sunday.

Hi, Howard. I agree with you that it is nice when people tell us their names. I, too, prefer to call people I'm corresponding with by their names, not their screen names. It makes it more personal, and I feel like I know them better. And, sometimes when I wade back through all the correspondence to get the name from Kyle or Carson, THEY don't even have it. I've only encountered that a couple times, but I find it annoying.

I am disappointed when I click on someone's profile and it is just one or two lines, but I do understand that sometimes people really don't get it that we really do want to get to know them, or are uncomfortable writing about themselves. And sometimes we have non-native English speaking friends for whom it is a struggle to write much.

But that's where your suggestion that we all update our profiles once a year or so comes in. It doesn't take long reading other people's conversations to learn that people really do care about us and want to know about us.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Carol

Thanks for stopping by Carol! That is exactly how I feel.

We all need to remind our referrals to keep up with this. That's where the autoresponder in the messages section of our affiliate program could be useful.

I don't know about that, Howard. How do you access it? It could really be helpful. It takes a long time to reply to all the replies, but I feel that it's important to do so. Carol

Hi Carol!

Go to your WA Affiliate Program link and click on the message tab. There you can set up messages that go out in many different day intervals. It is automatic! Cool, eh?

Way cool. Thanks so much, Howard.

You are most welcome!

Howard,

One of the other reasons some may want to protect their real name is that they are still working at a day job. They may be concerned that their employer might be worried about them working on this when they should be working on other things.

I myself thought about starting with an alias for this reason. But I do my WA work on Saturdays (like now) and a few weekday evenings. Besides my first web site is all about dogs and dog training and EVERYONE at work knows I'm a dog guy, so that's no secret!

Like you, I prefer to call people by their name. In college, it took me a long time to learn how to pronounce my friend Lakshmi Vanniasegaram's name, but I did!

Cheers,

Matthew

Thanks for stopping by Matthew and sharing!

Yes, I can see where if an employer, who was nervous about such things, could sense dissension in the ranks if they felt like an employee was "moonlighting" with a desire to move on.

I do think most employers would have no idea of the power of what is here and sluff it off as a hobby.

But, that being said, at least a nickname and a reason for someone wanting anonymity would be acceptable to state in the profile, just so we know.

Wow, yes, that is a tongue twister name!

Ehi Howard great message!

I must be honest I need to erite something about me in the description :D

You are right, it is important. I'll do it.

Marco

Awesome, Marco. Thank you!

And, thanks for stopping by and sharing.

I agree about giving update reports on your profile. It contributes to the group as a whole. Also it is important to tell a little more about yourself other then a short one or two short sentences. I get it one may want to be mysterious about themselves at first if your knew and still trying WA out. Or you are bashful to reveal some information about yourself. After a few weeks, you can go back
And update your profile.

Sharing your brief profile beyond one or two sentences builds a stronger community. It brings more of the human aspect into the experience and journey we are on.

Judson

Thanks for sharing Judson! Yes, so true.

Evolving here!

What a splendid idea I was wondering where and how this would happen I think it is a spectacular idea. Because we do we all grow from one another by hearing the stories, to understanding the mistakes, and most of all about conquering our own fears. The wealth of knowledge that we could tap into from one another is what makes the world go round!

I will update my profile as well

Awesome Ramona!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing! I am glad you feel as I do. Let's hope this spreads like a wildfire. The stories will be so helpful to the community as a whole!

On a side note, I spent twenty-five years in Summit County, CO, in Frisco. Loved it during our time there, but we were called elsewhere. We have been creating that dream ever since!
