Why Tell Us About You

In the past several months I have noticed individuals introducing themselves with just their name and a blank area where they should have written something about themselves. At first I was upset I thought if that individual cannot take the time to tell us a little about themselves, I am not going to take the time to be overly welcoming.

Then I did respond to a blog like that, not welcoming the individual but wishing them the best at Wealthy Affiliate (WA). I also decided at the time to ask the individual to tell me a little more about themselves. Their response turned on the light in the attic and made me think why others might also have legitimate reasons for being so brief. This person’s reason was language. They did not communicate well in English.
There are others who maybe shy or do not think their lives are interesting enough to write about. Or others who do not know where to begin. So I decided to create this blog with an outline that can be used to get anyone started on introducing themselves.

Why do you need to introduce yourself? It is a human desire to get to know with whom they are being acquainted, with whom they are going to be associated and with whom they will be doing business. Imagine if you were meeting someone for the first time and you were going to spend a long time together, and all they told you was their name. Would that be sufficient for you to warm to the individual, feel comfortable or even to do business with?
By telling people a little about yourself, you are asking them to trust you and at the same time trying to find common ground on which an association can be built.

The approach I recommend is an approach I used when being interviewed for new career positions. What I found was on most interviews to break the ice and to make the interviewee (me) feel relaxed, most interviewers started with the question or statement “tell us about Harvey Brown.” I even used the same approach when I was a manager and conducted interviews.
To ensure I did provide some information about myself I developed a template which I filled in overtime about who Harvey Brown is, what he likes, about his family, and why he wants the position for which he was being interviewed.
Before launching my introduction about me, I wrote it out and when I was comfortable about what I had to say, I started using it on interviews.
Over time what I noticed was not only did it help me to relax, but it humanised the whole process and made it seem like individuals trying to understand each other.

The following is not an exhaustive list but at least you will give your associates here at WA and the visitors to your website an insight into who you are:

• Family: are you married with children, or single
• Education: University, College, High School, Work experience
• Hobbies and/or sporting activities: making model planes, building cars, martial arts, swimming, etc
• Interests: watching tv, reading, painting, music, computers, etc.
• What attracted you to WA and why you want to start online marketing at this moment in your life.
As I said the list is not exhaustive and if you can think of anything else that would help newbies get started or give greater clarity to who they are let us know, and we can add it to the list.

Last but not least, remember this is a world where writing has to become the norm and what better way than to post something about you.

All the best, Harvey

Hello Harvey,
Thanks for sharing. I wish to emphasize trust issue. It is very important to have an idea of who you are connecting with for many reasons.
Benjamin :-)

Thank you Benjamin for your comment. Trust is something that we all hold valuable.

I am glad you posted this Harvey. I have also asked others here with essentially blank profiles if they would care to share a bit more about themselves. I will leave a nice reply and follow them anyway, but at the same time, I found it annoying.

You have given me reasons to pause and reconsider that some may very well have valid reasons for not sharing more of themselves.

Thanks for the positive comments Cindy.

Sometimes people want to be private about their situations. We all have our problems which include some form of illlness. There is no need to be embarrass because we are suffering from something that is not our fault. Some times when we share we get advice which helps us.

You are so right Luna. All of us have a disability of some sorts. Some are more apparent than others, but by speaking or writing about it we may find others with the same disability who can. Provide advice or a connection.

This has great points to follow, thank you.

You are welcome Tania.

Before you can put your opinions out there by writing, it is well to put yourself out there first. Good writers have their biographies available!

Very true Michael, the down side of that is not everyone starts out as a good writer, like most things it is a learnt process with lots of practice. If you add shyness into the mixture or using a new language, it becomes very intimidating.

Yeah, people do need to say a little bit more about themselves in their profile. I have to do the same.

That is the spirit Roger, thanks for the comment.

No problem, Harvey.

Dear Harvey,
You make great points. I agree with everything you wrote. And I still consider myself to be the exception.

A few years ago I began to show the signs of MS. Fast forward to today and I require two canes to walk. So all my fun hobbies like hiking are not options for me anymore. This all happened when I didn't have a partner so I can't tell you about my family either. My days are consumed with the thoughts of what can I do to fix this? How can I heal me? I'm sure that I have grown up a lot from this experience. I'm sure there have been many benefits. But none of them seem to scream "put me in your about me page." I cringed when I saw that that was a suggested part of if this program.

So what do you recommend for an exception like me?

Paula

There will always be exceptions to any template, and that is what makes us who we are. I will say however, the little bit you wrote about your current circumstances, spoke volumes about you and gave me a better understanding of the person with the nice smile. I am a very physical person and understand the psychological impact of not being able to do the things we love. Being in this community I hope will give you the incentive to find other activities that can replace the ones you can no longer perform. By the way I would still talk to the things I love and then explain why I can no longer enjoy them.

Thank you Harvey,
I truly wanted to hear your opinion. I appreciate that you gave it to me rather than just taking my reply as a kvetch session. That was good feedback. I believe I will have to take that approach. Always hidden is not my style. But you suggested a tool to make the authentic "about me" a reality.
Paula

Valuable help. It can be intimidating introducing oneself in such a big platform. However your blog will show newbies the light.

Thanks Harvey.

You are welcome Gifty. Yes it can be very intimidating especially when you are not use to presenting yourself.

After reading your blog and pondering the outline, I am going to edit my Profile page..I left a few important things out!!! Thanks...T

You are welcome Tammi. Sometimes it is hard to think about describing yourself. That is why I thought of putting this together.

Harvey, I'll go back and add a little more info on my bio. I agree with you that folks should give our "family" a little info on themselves.

That is the idea Mark, Take care. I believe today is the 42 anniversary of the Vietnam war. Thank you for your service.
