What's The Secret To A Page 1 Rank?

If you're like me, you've been posting regularly, and waiting faithfully for your posts to climb up the rankings in Google and finally reach page one. A lot of factors come into play, such as keyword usage, use of images, video, etc.

There is a secret that I discovered just recently that should help us all improve our rankings, and it's not complicated.

Hint: How Long Are Your Posts?

Backlinko did a study where they looked at one million Google search engine results, to find out what made posts rank higher. One of their results is significant.

They discovered that the average word count for a Google 1st page rank is 1,890 words.

Most of my posts are well short of that. I'm usually around average, which, currently, is 1151 words per blog post. I've been working under the assumption that I needed at least 1000 words per post,

Now I realize that I need almost twice that.

Here's a statistic that will show you how things have changed.

Back in 2014, just 5 years ago, the average post was only 800 words long. Now, as I said before, the average post is 1151 words, a 42% increase.

And, that's still almost 750 words short of the average length for a page 1 rank.

Another statistic: 55% of bloggers still write less than 1000 words per post. I started off that way myself. Now I write over 1000 words every time.

I'm still short, though, so I'm upping my minimum to 2000 words.

Now I Know What I Need To Do

I've got to go back to all my old posts and add content to bring them up to around 2000 words. That might be difficult to do without adding a bunch of fluff, which could be another kiss of death for rank.

Do you need to update your posts? Do you need to add quality, relevant content to bring them up to page 1 average?

Most of us, including me, don't write a 2000 word post here at WA. Most of us don't write even 1000 words, which is good, because who has time to read all those long posts?

We should do that though, if we want to have a WA post rank high in Google. I know there are some of you that do optimize your WA posts for Google.

Not me, not usually. My WA posts are usually pretty short. It takes an average of 3.5 hours to write a post these days, and I'm writing my long ones for my website.

I've got a lot of work to do. I'd better get to it.

What's your take on this post? I'd love to hear your opinion.

I'm Grant.

Thanks for the insightful and very useful article. 2000 words per post? Oh my, I got some writing to do!

Thanks. Out of all my posts, only a couple are over 2000 words. I need to lengthen my posts too

Good info. Thanks Grant. Tom

You’re welcome, Tom.

Wow, that's too long for me.

Might be for me too. I’ll be finding out soon.

Interesting statistics. Thanks for sharing what you have found.

You are welcome

Excellent information Grant, Thank You for sharing this!
Absolutely correct, quality word count (and longer) posts closer to 2000 words rank better:)

My average word count for the SAC is 2174 words.

That’s amazing. I’m making you one of my role models. :-)

Good evening Grant,

Thank you for this information.
In the beginning, I did not use to write long posts and was happy to reach the 1000 words. Over time my posts are longer reaching 1500 to sometimes nearly 2000.
I try to go back on a regular basis to check and add to old posts, like that everything rotates.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

I think that you’re on the right track. I’ll be doing the same.

Thank you for sharing. Most of my blogs are 1500 words and up. Thank God.

Nice work. Mine are around 1200 or so.

Thank you for your insight. I have been pondering if I needed to go back and rewrite my beginning articles because of their length.

That’s what I’m going to do.

Very interesting statistics. Thanks for sharing. Most of my posts are over a 1,000 words which I'm happy about.

Thanks for checking in with a comment. I appreciate it
