The Wealthy Affiliate ranking system - genius or curse?

As I read through the blog posts today it is clear that the change in the ranking algorithm has had two effects, that were inevitable with any change in a system of this kind:

1) Some people were surprised and excited by a sudden rise in their rank that was unexpected. This reaction is understandable as people feel that their work has been recognised although many seem surprised by the sudden rise.

2) Many people seem to have been surprised and and some horrified as they saw their rank suddenly drop. Some people have dropped a few places, some in the tens and others in the thousands. It seems to be the same with those on the up!

The problem with ranking anything in life is this: it can inspire and it can also deflate and I have read blogs today on both sides of the fence - good people who have seen their ranks rise, and equally good people who have now become a little disillusioned with the system and have been demotivated by the process.

So this begs the question - why have a ranking system in the first place if it can both inspire and demotivate overnight?

I would offer this insight for what my two pennies are worth.

1) Kyle and Carson built the system and can change it at will - it's their 'baby' as it were, and we are all just playing in their backyard. They have built a community which is a wonderful one but it is still in the backyard of WA and someone needs to be in control and set the rules. The algorithm for calculating rank is obviously much more complex than the 3 titles of "helper", "creator" and "activity" would suggest and this has been confirmed by Kyle today in a blog outlining some of the changes. See https://my.wealthyaffiliate.co...

2) Rankings here at WA are only as important as the value you place on them. They are not a measure of your worth as a person although we are quite often conditioned to see ourselves in competition with one another, ranking systems such as the one here, encourage that attitude. Whether or not that is a 'good' thing will be up to us as individuals to decide - and that choice will be determined by what we deem important at the time. My own rank dropped 30 places today and I would be lying if said I was not disappointed with the drop as I believed I have been working hard online to help and encourage others. I had to check my thinking, refocus and hence this blog.

I believe that the motivation behind the WA ranking is a genuine desire to inspire people to be the best they can and to help others and this is obviously motivating a lot of people as evidenced by the number of success blogs posted as people climb up the rankings. The 'problems' can come when people perceive that the goal posts have shifted, without warning, which can then lead to disillusionment and disappointment. However I would suggest to anyone who feels a little 'let down' (literally) today, not to take it to heart and to try to see the bigger picture so as not to become disillusioned or disheartened, especially when they feel they have been doing everything asked of them, (and they have) in order to maintain or climb the rankings. But if they feel that the goal posts change without notice, people may well feel a little put out or feel that it is 'unfair' in some way. And in this way, the initial intention to inspire, can be turned on its head.

In the UK there is a lot of emphasis on testing in the education system currently, and this has been increased in recent years to such a level that we now have many 11 year olds being put under enormous pressure from schools to do well in their SATS because it affects the ranking of the school. My own daughter who was due to take SATS last summer was not entered for them in the end because she was 18 months behind in her learning compared to others in year 6. This is due to the fact that she came from a disadvantaged background which meant that she had no nursery education in her early years and completely missed out on the first term of school when she was eligible to go. Consequently, she has been running a 'catch up' race with her peers ever since. (I fostered and then effectively adopted her). I liken it to her starting the race 100 yards behind everyone else and therefore in maths, English and science, (the things that the SATS exams focuses on), she is far behind everyone else and could easily become disillusioned because she is always at the back. Her motivation could easily be affected by this and she could choose to give up and not try.

My advice to her is simple - they are only measuring a few very specific skills and there are many attributes and qualities that she has, in which she far exceeds her peers, but that are not measured in the SATS tests. Things such as resilience, emotional intelligence, creativity and sheer GRIT! These are, in my opinion, equally valuable and desirable qualities as being able to manipulate numbers or regurgitate a science formula. My daughter, I'm pleased to say enjoys school immensely and the effort and care she puts in is exemplary. She never comes top in any test, but she tries hard and given her circumstances, her attitude is amazing.

It is the same here at WA - the intention I believe, (unlike SATS) is to widen the basis of 'assessment' with the goal of making it fairer but it is fallible system because it cannot yet account for many of the variables that could be monitored - like people helping others in their own time outside of WA, like defining what 'helping' really. is. Some people write posts that help many by motivating them, some people's post address a specific problem which helps others by giving them an answer to a problem. How do you discern which is the more 'helpful' or which is considered 'communicating?"

These are all questions that could come up and we may never know the answer since this whole system in itself is also a 'work in progress'. I am sure that Kyle and Carson will have thought of this when deciding to change the system. This also begs the question as to whether it is intended to be a 'fair' system in the first place, and since each and every one of us will have a different definition of what that 'fair' is, that must surely be a matter of perspective also.

My point about the WA rank is really this:

1) The more transparent the ranking algorithm is, the fairer it will be perceived to be by the community. In order to motivate people, the people have to know what they are striving to achieve in the first place, otherwise any action they take will simply be floundering around in the dark guessing where the target is. They will not be able to hit a target they cannot see or understand in the first place.

It is true that we were told that there would be algorithm changes this year, but perhaps, (and I say this with the greatest respect and grace to Kyle and Carson), perhaps, a little more warning about the specific changes that were involved, could have avoided some of the shock and disappointment felt by many today. "Forewarned is forearmed" as they say and if people had known that more emphasis was going to be put on long-standing helpers, indeed what the definition of 'helping' was, maybe that would have managed expectations a little better. This is not a criticism, just some feedback and after all, we all know that feedback is a good thing as we strive to improve.

2) The rankings are intended to inspire; but it you find yourself being uninspired by them, then I suggest that you take no notice of them at all, and focus on other measurements of your success - there will be many for sure. Ranking in WA will not earn you money from your website, not does it correlate with how your website ranks in Google so if these things are important to you, then focus on those instead. As and when the rankings in WA become more important to you, focus on your work here.

So that's it - oh dear, this post has turned out much longer than I intended but it may offer some consolation to those who have gone down in rank today (such as myself) and some inspiration to others who have risen, and that's ok with me.

We are all free to give our own meaning to the unique world each one of us inhabits. If things serve us, we should hold onto them and cherish them; if things no longer serve us then we should gracefully let them drift from our lives. There may come a time when our perceptions and focus change again and the great wheel of life turns once more, altering again what we deem important, which in turn changes where we put energy, value and effort.

One thing is for sure, whether we are going up or going down, we are all amazing, highly-valued and unique individuals who can succeed in whatever we set our minds on. Let us not forget that about ourselves today. The choice is ours.

I hope you find this helpful and do feel free to comment.

Well said Gail, Is the same thing I was pondering on for the last two months now and thanks for putting it in a nice and clever perspective. People will feel disappointed in this kind of grading if not taking courteously. I know it is important for Kyle and Carson to retaining their customer, yet disuniting them through unnecessary competition.

There are many people here, who are very competition conscious and wanted to be on to at all time and seeing themselves dropping from the ranks will depress them and feel stupid and this is not what WA is here to do, creating unhealthy competition within Her membership.

You cannot blame the people for wanting to be on the top because the society has created that for them and this the reason I was posting the spiritual messages to calm down those tendencies. Thanks again for your clever way of doing it GailLowe. Much blessings. Edi

Thanks for your kind words Edi and I know we are on the same page in much of what we think so I appreciate your taking the time to read and reply.
Discussion on WA is very valuable and a great way to learn, but it's not the real reason most of us joined so we just need to keep our eyes on the goals we have for ourselves and anything else is a bonus.
All the best to you today Edi.
Gail

Hi Gail! It's easy to get sucked into the whole ranking thing. I try not to pay too much attention to it. I appreciate that anything I write here has the potential to be ranked either by WA and/or Google but I try to remember that I'm writing for an audience--not rankings. Alanna

Sounds like an excellent attitude Alanna. You've got it sussed! All the best to you today. Gail

You are right in your point about WA ranking algorithm. That has nothing to do with our own site as our online business. That only shows how you are active in the WA community.
Being an Ambassador can never add a single point to our website. The more time you will give to be active in the community is a time subtracted from your time for your site development.
To answer hundreds of notices here needs more time and your site will be deprived of content.

Thanks Jimmy. I do think it is important to be helpful and active here, but just to have a good perspective too. Have a great day. Gail

Thanks for this Gail. I was surprised too this morning to go from 20k to 50k :-) I thought my activity yesterday after some time off was the cause.

Shows how important it is to build on your own platform, and not rely on validation from other people's algorithms (thinking social media here too).

But like you said, my goal these next 6months is to populate my blog and generate a consistent income. So here goes something...

Will check out Kyle's article.

Thanks Fify. I think you have the right attitude as it is our websites not our WA activity which will generate the income we are looking for. That said, the WA platform is what helps us get there so I think it is just a matter of perspective.
I love your happy photo by the way - if you smile your way through your life like that, all will be well. :) Gail

I have to admit that I was a bit confused to have dropped so much, but it didn't bother me much. I was actually a little relieved. I never thought that I should have been an Ambassador because I had not been here very long. I have also been ill and not terribly active for the past week or more and I expected to drop.

To be honest, upon my return I had planned to concentrate more on writing for my website anyway. I really need to be more consistent in doing that.

Best Wishes,

Anita

Hi Anita. Sorry to hear you've been ill and I'm sending you lots of wellbeing wishes.
Like I said to Pam, if it acts as a bit of a wake up call, all the better. Take good care of you! :) Gail

Thank you, Gail!

Hi Gail. This is a brilliant article. You have captured all the angles, given recommendations, advised, comforted and brought stirring analogies. I give you full marks by my standards!

You have pointed out clearly that each one has different strengths that they offer to the community. This is what makes us so unique. I believe this uniqueness helps to sustain the community, by keeping members bonded and even subscribed. I personally believe that some are here because of the glue of the community spirit and what it does for them, psychologically.

I did share my views on that post from Kyle you referenced and hope it wasn't misunderstood by anyone as my being upset. Far from it!!.

My challenges were just to encourage;

1. Proper proactive communication for the rolling out of major changes - technical and otherwise
2. ...And to understand the human "spirit."

I don't believe that Kyle and Carson want what they have created to come across as a betrayal of the very system, we were prepped and encouraged to engage in.

It is ironic that we are on this as a community as Google sometimes makes sudden changes to their algorithm and turn millionaires into "paupers" in one night.:) Remember that?

Hall of Famer post, Gail. It is!

All the best!
David

Thank you very much for your kind words David. I did read your comment on Kyle's post and thought it was very apt too, And I don't really think there is a problem with expressing how people feel if it is done in a constructive and polite way. After all, as I said in the post, feedback to all is important and to be encouraged but that is not the same as having a rant.

I love the psychological stance that you take no things as I love everything about the way we think and how it affects us.

I love your comment about Google changing things too as it is so true.... we are all at the whim of someone else - we can't change what happens - just how we view and respond. Therein lies our power - but I know you know that! :)

Have an amazing day.
Gail

Another Hall of Famer. :) You are one wise lady.

I bow now!

David

Thank you for putting such a unique point of view on this, I was a little disappointed to se my rank drop so drastically but after reading Kyles explanation on how it was computed it makes more sense. It was a shocker to see such a drastic change though.

Thanks Pam - shocks are sometimes there as a bit of a wake up call so maybe that's a good thing. I definitely need to focus on adding a few more posts to my sites, so I'll be doing that in the next couple of days for sure. All the best today. Gail

Good for you, that's what I aim to do as well

Yes my ranking went dropped drastically but I don't really pay that much attention to my ranking anyway because it jumps around so much.
I agree some warning would have been nice but then again like someone stated we are all just visitors in Kyle's playground.

Tried and true

Elaine

Thanks Elaine. Glad you are not too affected by the changes. And we must remember that if we get our priorities in line, this playground is a wonderful place to be.

These are all really, really good points Gail! I understand the testing problems. I did not do very well in high school (I didn't like all the social pressure) and did terribly on the math potion of the SAT and ACT. I did great at English. I was only happy taking college classes while in high school. I felt at home there.

I got straight A's through all of my graduate school courses though and did well and graduated with honors with my bachelor's degree! Testing is not the be all end all and schools that don't focus so much on testing do MUCH better in terms of student happiness, learning, retention of learning, graduation rate and most everything else!

I actually went up a few places today but I never move much when these changes occur. Last time it happened in the summer I didn't move at all! I was one of only 2 in the top 200 that didn't move I believe. I guess I am very stable.

Anyway, I like your points here about forewarning and clear definition of what ranking is based on. I can't complain about my own ranking but if I was suddenly moved 1,000 places it would make me a bit confused too!

Jessica

Thanks for reading Jessica and I like the story of your own schooling. It really is all a matter of perspective and opinion at the end of the day, as is everything in life. With my daughter, I just want her to feel valued and loved because it would be so easy for her to feel deflated and give up - I see it with other students at school who maybe don't have the same perspective.
I wrote this post because I have seen some people get a bit disillusioned and wanted to suggest ways of thinking that may help - and I do think that making the algorithm more transparent might just manage people's expectations more - and in business the teach that managing expectations is key.
Have a wonderful day. i'm off to bed as it's 2.30 am now!
Oh Gail.....not again! :)

I don't mind at all. I've been here for a little over 6 weeks, and yesterday my ranking was 242. It make me uncomfortable actually because I didn't feel like I knew enough to be ranked so highly. I certainly don't know enough to be actively helping people with more complex questions so I was feeling a bit like a fraud. Also, my website is yet make any money.
To my surprise my ranking today is now 2052, and I feel this is a much more appropriate ranking for someone with as little knowledge as me. At least I know what happened. For a moment I thought I might have been penalised for doing something that I was unaware of!
Onward and upward to everybody!

Thanks for reading Mia and I think you have reset your expectations wisely for what it's worth. My dad always used to say "there are lies, damn lies and statistics" so I've always been a bit sceptical of anything we can put a number too - especially my age! haha! :)
