Happy Birthday Les Paul 2024! (June 9, 1915)
(Title image by DALL-E 3)
Hi WA Friends!
Just a quick note for all music and guitar fans to say happy birthday to one of the greatest guitar players and inventors of musical equipment of our time!
Les with his Les Paul guitar, standing next to his prototype 8-track machine
You can read about some of his major accomplishments and discography in my previous post:
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/frankb-1/blog/happy-birthday-les-paul-june-9-1915
He was the inventor of the first solid-body electric guitar, Gibson's Les Paul model, tape echo, as well as sound-on-sound and multitrack recording, to name just a few of his contributions that changed the recording world!
I was lucky enough to meet him back in 2004, during which I saw him play, and afterward, we had an amazing conversation! During the soundcheck, he showed me his pedalboard of digital effects and proudly proclaimed that he had invented the analog versions of each one of them years ago. He was still able to kick my ass on guitar at almost 90 years old, but that's Les for you! Lol π
Les & Me (groveling for an autograph! Lol)
Today, to celebrate, I am only listening to his music and watching the 1988 Les Paul Tribute - Brooklyn Academy Of Music concert, which you can see here (one hour long):
https://youtu.be/MtbobDQvJwg?si=jNhRGYq9y0PlsL3x
It features players like Eddie Van Halen, Jan Hammer, Brian Setzer, David Gilmour, Waylon Jennings, BB King, Steve Miller, and Stanley Jordan!
If you don't want to watch the whole concert, then be sure to check out Les playing his hit song "Lover." You can see his "Les Pulverizer" (multitrack recording box) and a microphone screwed to one of his guitars. He was constantly experimenting to come up with new ideas!

Later this evening, we're having a Les Paul birthday party with food and streaming a variety of Les Paul performances from Fat Tuesdays and the Iridium. We might even throw a regular movie in there. I was thinking of Pacific Rim I.
I'll leave you with one of my Pinterest pins that is getting a lot of attention:
Haha, that hurts me just looking at it! π π΅βπ«

Happy birthday Les!!
ππΈπ»π
It was an incredible honor and a great opportunity, Nick! π π
Ahhh, the good ol' days, but I'm still having fun. Lol π
Rock On! π€
Frank πΈ
The good ol' days indeed Frank, but... I know you will continue to have fun no matter what day it is my friend!!
πΈπ»ππ
Yeah, it's my super-power, Nick, which was drilled into me by my Italian family from as far back as I can remember! Lol π

The names you mention are a who's who in the music industry.
A friend of mine was a big part of the music industry and I love nothing more than listening to stories about my favorite stars who were his collaborators.
A different era and you have some fantastic memories.
Thanks, Karen! π
Check out the tribute video & you'll have a great time! π
Frank π€πΈ
That's great Frank! Its experiences like that which add spice to our lives. Well done.
Mel
I had a lot of connections in the music industry back then, Mel. I was the backstage doc at a large concert venue and met many promoters and managers.
My music room is filled with those memories, with dozens of autographed record albums of my favorite bands. π

Hey Frank
Your pin says it all, about 35 years ago for me! ππ
Les was truly an amazing person and what he did for guitars and music, will likely have a HUGE impact on music forever! And what an honor for you to have met him! That's Awesome!
Happy Birthday Les!! πΈππΆπ

Hi Tim
Yeah, it was a humbling experience, for sure!
Les changed the music in an extraordinary way, and you won't see his kind again.
I knew you'd get a kick out of the pin! Lol
It reminds me of my high school days. We even had a cheap smoke machine that never worked right. Hahaha π
Rock On and listen to some Les today to honor him! π€
Frank πΈ
Haha, cool!
We ran about a 40 can light show, with smoke, a soundman and a light man, but still made no money! ππ
Watching the tribute, Eddie is playing now. Very Cool! ππΈ!
Thanks again for this post, Frank! πΈππΆ
Tim πΌ
Wow, that's impressive, Tim! ππ
We were just teenagers back then, having a good time. Lol π
Yeah, that's a super cool concert, and it shows the reverence those big stars had for Les. So glad you're enjoying it. Did you know that Les was Steve Miller's godfather??
Sorry about that last message, I was on my zero turn mowing and trying to type! ππ
I'll finish the concert later on.
