Hi WA Friends!

Please help me celebrate the birthday of the incomparable George Benson!

A Little History

George Benson

George Benson is an exceptionally talented individual with a passion for jazz and R&B. Born on March 22, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, George's affinity for music was evident early on. Initially drawn to the ukulele, he quickly transitioned to the guitar, and by the age of 21, he was already recording his first album as a band leader, "The New Boss Guitar," showcasing a style that seamlessly blended traditional jazz with R&B influences.

George's career took a significant turn when he joined the Brother Jack McDuff Quartet in the early 1960s, a period that honed his skills and broadened his horizons. However, it was his solo work that truly set him apart, especially with the release of "Breezin'" in 1976. This album transformed the landscape of jazz by becoming the first jazz album to attain platinum certification. I remember hearing this album for the first time as a college student, and it blew me away!

Over the years, George's versatility allowed him to traverse various musical landscapes, from hard bop to smooth jazz and even pop crossovers, earning him a distinguished place in the pantheon of guitar legends. His collaborations span a wide array of artists and bands, including Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and the Count Basie Orchestra, showcasing his ability to blend effortlessly into any musical setting while leaving his unique mark.

Most people are familiar with his popular tunes that receive lots of radio and streaming play, like "On Broadway" and "This Masquerade, but did you know that George is also a hardcore Jazz and Bebop guitar player?

An amazing Live Performer!

I've had the good fortune to see George perform live on two occasions, and he stunned me both times with the breath of his genre-spanning repertoire!

His audience consists of musicians and music lovers of all ages, from the teens to people my age and much older.

George is very much the quintessential performer and showman!

Hey, super fan of George Benson heeeeeeeeere!!!! I discovered him when I was about 17 years old and always loved his elegance in music!

I was lucky enough to see him performing live in my town in Southern Italy, about 20 years ago! I remember I followed his car after his concert and literally stalked him while he was having dinner in the restaurant, with his crew!
He signed me an autograph "To Romina", saying that his daughter maybe has the same name! I am totally jalous of that autograph!!! He is one of the best musicians ever in the world!!

Hi Romy

That's an excellent experience, and I'm so glad you cherish the memory! 😎

I agree that George is a fabulous guitar player! πŸ‘ πŸ’―

I lived in Italy for almost four years, from the late 1970s to the early '80s, and I visited Bari. I remember how beautiful it was there!

Frank 🎸

Oh wow, it is wonderful you were in my town! It has changed a lot, more fun places now and more lively than before! Hope to welcome you here again!

By the way, thanks for your post! You opened the box of my memories by telling the life of this unique and wonderful musician who I called "my husband" for very long time!

Of couse, George does not know he was my husband :)))))

Your town was charming, Romy.

Haha, that's funny about George! πŸ˜‚ 🀣

Frank 🎸

I remember listening to the "The Greatest Love Of All" back in the day. Such a wonderful artist who many folks have not heard of.

Hi Kevin

Yeah, it's amazing how many people don't know George by name but will recognize some of his big radio hits.

Check out the two video links I left in this thread! 😎

Frank 🎸

The great George Benson. I can remember the Wings of Love. Other tunes too, but not the names. What a man.
Bux

Hi Dave

Yeah, George is a phenomenal entertainer!

Do "On Broadway," "Turn Your Love Around," and "This Masquerade" ring any bells? 😎

Frank 🎸

On Broadway does, yes. I will need to listen to the other two and see if I recognise them. I'll get back to you.
Great post.

Sounds good, Bux! πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž

Rock On! 🀘
Frank 🎸

Wow, that Michael O'Neill (not sure of the spelling) is a monster player as well!

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim

Yeah, George has always played with some of the best musicians. Wes Montgomery was his good friend! Lol 😎

Frank 🎸

Tim, be sure to listen to the album "Bad Benson" (1974) before the day is over. It has "face-melting" Jazz and Bebop solos galore! Lol πŸ˜ƒ

Frank 🎸

I will do that, Frank!

Thanks! 🎸🀘🎸🀘

Tim 🎼

Let me know what you think, Tim. 😎

I didn't listen to the entire album, but what I heard was great! I didn't realize he was such a monster player. That hollow body tone is just sweet!

Thanks for the recommendation, Frank! 🎸🎸

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim

Yeah, it was his voice that got him into the public eye with all those hit songs that dominated the radio charts, but underneath it all he’s an incredible guitar player.

Watch any of his live shows on YouTube and you’ll see how frequently his playing ability β€œpeeks out.β€πŸ˜Ž

Frank 🀘🎸

Hey Frank,

That was the surprise for me, knowing some of his chart toppers, but not knowing his additional talent.

I'll be waiting for the next guitar player's birthday.

Rock On and enjoy your weekend!! 🎸🀘

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim

Yeah, in the world of pop music voice and image are the keys to the kingdom.

It’s raining hard here in RI, which makes it a great music and movie day! Lol πŸ˜ƒ

Happy Saturday! πŸ₯³
Frank 🀘🎸

Hi Frank,

We finally have sun....finally, but it's cold here in Michigan!

Enjoy your music and movie day! 🎼πŸŽ₯🍿

Tim 🎼

That’s the plan, Tim, and I hope you do, too! 😎

Stay Warm & Rock On! 🀘
Frank 🎸

"Turn your love around" and "On the wings of love" - the two tunes I remember off the radio stations, Frank! πŸ“»

Appreciate the post! 🎸 🀘
Isaiah 😁

Hi Isaiah

Yeah, those were two big radio hits for George!

Check out some of George's Bebop and Jazz recordings. I think someone with your musical background will really appreciate them!

The album "Guitar Man" contains covers of popular tunes that George rearranged, and they sound absolutely fabulous! The chord changes and melodic phrasing will just blow you away, very much like Stevie Wonder. 😎

Frank 🎸

Thanks, Frank. I will check those out!

You're welcome, Isaiah. 😎

I love George Benson. My favorite album is Breezin. He sings on that album. I had Breezin album on 8track. Don't have the 8 track anymore, but I still have the original LP album. Earl Klugh is great, too, but my Klugh album was lost in a storage unit my sister let go of. Thanks for all this wealth of information you have shared about Mr. Benson's career.

Hi Delois

I love Breezin', too. George sings on many of his albums. You should check out more of his recordings.

Earl Klugh is a fabulous nylon-string guitar player, and I can never get enough of his music!

Haha, I think 8-track tapes were brilliant! You could select any of four songs instantly (but not from the start) with the press of a button. Like CD, but in an analog format instead of the over-compressed sound of digital music. Lol 😎
