Hey everyone, I was thinking of staring a new niche site about vegetable gardening (becasue gardening is a big hobby of mine) but i'm a bit stuck on how to narrow it down. Do

I think vegetable gardening is a great sub niche, maybe check the competition, and see how easy it is to rank for keywords. If there is a huge competition then niche down further.

Oh I like helping with brain storming, let me see: organic gardening, growing a community garden, small spaces gardens, hanging gardens, garden designs, interior gardens, pet friendly gardens, themed gardens, architectural gardens, small gardens, miniature gardens, gigantic gardens, art gardens,
Edible gardens, display gardens, garden features, gardens, herbal medicine gardens, flower gardens, fruit gardens water featured gardens, cultural gardens, self contained gardens, gardens for people with allergies, city gardens, rooftop gardens, apartment gardens, roadside gardens, cemetery gardens, gardens to help homeless, gardening for the non-gardeners, money saving gardening tips, how to feed a community gardening, gardening for life, yoga gardens, gardens for retreats, gardening is happiness ...

I could go on forever lol

Oh wow,
I might have to come to you if I make another site for some brain storming your amazing.
Debs :)

Haha thanks Debs I am better at thinking for other people, and not for myself a big conundrum of my life :) and anytime my friend.

Ezra - what about gardens for disabled or autistic children wouldn't that be cool? Or...
- creating a chef's gourmet garden
- A paleo/vegetarian/ vegan - diet garden

lol I better stop my brain is running away from me...

Thanks a lot, that helps

You are welcome :)

I like the idea of focusing on vegetable gardening. I think there'd be a lot of scope for good content. If you have a particular strength with gardening (container or indoor) that would be a good starting point.

All the best.

Hope this helps

thanks a lot Andrew

Why do most people think you need to be in a super narrow niche to succeed? I thought your articles rank for individual specific keywords that you target so even if you're in

Once you are established in your niche, you can start expanding to related products and topics. Google will then respond well as you do so, because they know you are an authority on the original topic.

That being said, I've seen some people go far too niche. Don't do "guitar strings", go "guitars" and include straps, picks, cases, music, etc.

Yes, Google ranks by article, but you've got to establish credibility with them first before they will extend that credibility to keywords which don't seem close enough on original review.

Does that help?

That definitely helps

Search engines want to display the best content for their users - and if you have a super specific niche where you constantly write about the same topic, naturally the search engine (and your visitors) will begin to assume that you are an expert in that niche (even if you're not!) - thus search engines will likely begin to favour your content for that particular topic, so it helps you rank.

For example let's say you setup a niche about snack helmets (as per the example in the training) and this all you write about... Then one day you write about laying turf in a garden... The search engine will assume you have no idea what you're talking about on that topic & whilst it might get listed, it likely won't be ranked very high at all.

So unless you can consistently deliver regular content on all the different niches on one site you shouldn't do it - but even if you can, you then run into problem number 2...

Problem number 2 is that if you're talking about multiple stuff on your site it becomes harder to target your promotions. Is the user interested in your snack helmets or are they interested in learning how to lay turf in their garden? (going from the example above again).

So basically by creating super-targeted niche websites you're just making your life a heck of a lot easier - you can rank easier & you can promote more targeted offers a heck of a lot easier :)

Hope that makes sense ;)

Thanks that definitely helps.
But let's say the stuff you write about is somewhat related, eg. a niche site where I write about cooking and cleaning at home (it's not identical but its all home related), cant I have a good chance of succeeding?
Both of the topics I cover on my site are home related. Or would you suggest focussing on one thing eg. home cleaning or Cooking only? I hope you understand what I mean.

Totally get you - and yep you could certainly see success in doing what you’re saying, however again it comes down to effective targeting. The more narrow your niche, the easier it is to know what they want so the easier it is to put a targeted offer in front of them. The wider you go the harder it becomes - so whilst you might be growing a larger audience, your conversions will likely not be as high. You would find greater success creating a separate website for cooking & cleaning because overall your traffic would be the same but the conversions on each site would be higher :)

Thanks a lot, your insight clarifies everything.

From your personal experience, what keyword practice works best for SEO? I've seen many conflicting instructions. Some say the only place you should try to fit your keyword is

i installed expand seo plugin- may no longer beup to date - but this like yoast gives you hints where you can add keywords for improving seo.
remember the most important thing is to write for the audience, if you do this well then you will be adding other keywords naturally and with the social engagement google will see it is relevant content and consider it seriously.
watch jays latest keyword webinar and follow the advice in there for the post types and see how far you get.
good luck
phil

Could you please share the link to Jay's webineer? I'll try to check out the plugin and see how it works out. Thanks

its the last one about keyword comprehension- just click on the live events and it should be in the last few weeks .
have fun with the plugin- go for 60 and above, but don't strive for 100. things have changed a little.within the google algorithm, but use it as guidelines.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I have it in my title, first and last paragraph and my meta description.

I've got a couple of posts where I used the same strategy so I'm curious to see how it works out. If it gets ranked under the targeted keyword that's a great practice I'll definitely continue to use. Thanks for your feedback.

Erza,
I follow what our Live Training Coach says -
Use the keyword in the title of my post -
once in the first paragraph
in the meta description -
and in the keyword description

If, I happen to use it throughout my content
it happens but I do not purposely do this.
Susan

Great! Atleast I know I'm not doing it wrong. I use my keywords exactly the same way but I thought by not fitting it in a sub heading (or alternative versions of it in the content) I was doing It wrong. Thanks for your feedback.

Would it be a bad idea for somebody to choose a general niche? For instace, picking 'home' in general as your niche and then covering topics from cooking to gardening to cleani

hey hi Ezra -- all good questions!

from all that we've heard and read about here at WA -- the best, long-term success is to build a selected niche in-depth and deep which means, yes, a very tight, narrow niche which you can build out and become an authority niche on ... with lots of blog postings of quality content on a consistent basis -- so it is vital to choose a topic that you truly can sustain energy and interest in !

and suggest, of course, carry on with the OEC training to successful completion ...

all the best for a big, successful 2019, cheerio .... ⭐️🎈

In the example you give, I think you will have a hard time keeping up with your site because it will take you a long time to have enough "gardening" articles to attract gardeners when you are only writing about gardening 33% of the time you spend writing.

The same idea will apply to cooks and people who want to read about cleaning.

You can do what you want, but the way I would tackle that is to pick one aspect of it and make a goal to write a certain number of quality articles on that part...25 articles, for example, then make the change over to another item on your list and write all the articles you need on that while still trying to add an article every week to the first subject.

As you take on new subjects to focus on, you still need to add weekly articles to the subjects you've already built up. The reason I say this is because if you want to write about gardening, you are not going to want your most recent article to be on growing tomatoes as we go through January (Or a very cold month wherever you live).

All of this to say that your site and its articles need to be relevant considering what's in season.

I wish you the best in success!

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll just go with a narrow niche so i don't loose focus by trying to cover so many topics
