Just a Quick Word About Copied Content & Rising Above It

I had a referral reach out to me with concerns about copied content, so I wanted to make sure I addressed it in a way to put him and other members' concerns at ease.

When it comes to the possibility of having your content copied online, the fact is that it can happen.

The internet is filled with content and there are always going to be people out there trying to take shortcuts.

No one wants to have their content copied and published without permission. You work hard on your it, and for someone else to publish it as their own feels like a personal attack.

One Important Thing To Remember:

Even if someone copies your content it in no way penalizes your hard work or takes away all your traffic. It's really more hurtful on a personal level than any kind of financial one.

It's something that can drive you crazy if you let it. In fact, it can take you away from publishing more quality content. But with so many variables that are out of our control in a situation like that, the worst thing that a copier can take away from you is your momentum.

Think of it like this. If someone cheats off you during a test without you knowing it, did they get a temporary benefit from it? Sure. But did it affect you at the end of the day? Nope.

And let's say they cheat again off you during the next test. Are you being slowed down in any way? Not at all.

The only way you'd be slowed down is if you get so worried about others cheating off you that you stop concentrating on your own test. And as we all well know, ultimately the person copying is only getting a momentary benefit that they can't sustain. It sounds corny, but they're truly cheating themselves in the long run.

What Action Can You Take?

First, let's not start searching the internet for copies of our content. This will take away from your momentum BIG time. But should it come to your attention, don't worry, you can report the offense to the search engines and the content will be removed immediately.

In the unlikely event that someone has infiltrated WA with those intentions, report them.

What About Financial Loss?

If someone copies an article that momentarily ranks higher than yours, this is a blip on the radar when you have 100 other articles. In other words, the more quality content you have, the better.

And if someone is trying to copy ALL of your articles, this is a HUGE red flag and even easier for the search engines to spot. They'll find it, you'll find it, SOMEONE will find it.

Once found out, the copier's content will lose its rank and they're dead in the water while you're still out there with solid, quality content.

It's important to remember too that being ranked #1 doesn't automatically mean more commissions than #2. First page ranking content is the top goal, but, again, it doesn't automatically mean #4 gets more click-throughs and conversions than #5.

So to that point, if copied content is at #1 while original content is at #2, don't lose your head thinking about all the conversions you missed out on. Keep your head up! You're still in that sweet spot where you want to be and the copier's content won't penalize yours :)

And guess what, when they're gone, you're back in your rightful spot :)

Is it painful when you find out someone is ranking with your stuff? Absolutely. But don't let it bring you down. It's short-lived, and the copier cannot sustain this.

It's really important to remember that copying catches up to the copier. Search engines know it, and ultimately so do the people copying.

Shortcuts don't last. Keep pushing forward. Don't let this affect you and the content you create. Follow the experts' examples like Kyle, Carson, Jay, and the rest of the leaders here and don't lose your momentum.

Those who take shortcuts can't steal your drive, your focus, and your determination to reach your goals. Keep that attitude, and rise above :)

I've had this happen to me some time ago Eric and found out while checking my rankings in Google.

This person used the same title, exact images (on one of the screenshots you could see my FB profile pic and name, talk about caught red-handed), and barely changed the content. Yet he still was ranked one position under me.

Turns out, this same website had taken several of my posts and probably posts from others.

Talk about frustrating, so I called them out on it and asked them to remove all of the stolen content. Only one of the post was ever taken down.

As upsetting as it is, it's important to realize that these people DON'T last as their website eventually gets penalized, their strategy falls apart, and since they never took the time to acquire the proper skills of doing it on there own, they give up.

It's unfortunate that anyone has to experience this, but you are right, keep your head up, take the appropriate actions as shared above, and move on.

I just hope I can produce something good enough that someone would want to plagiarize it. I will deal with that when it happens.

That's a perfect example, man. It's frustrating, eats part of you up, but just like you said, that person can't steal the skills you've acquired. It's just text, and eventually it's removed. Meanwhile, while they're off looking for other shortcuts, there you are making it to Vegas. Perfect example of keeping your cool and pushing forward :)

Yes, indeed!

Hope all is well with you, Eric.

I haven't had that happen yet, but good point.

We all hope it will never happen to us. But if it ever does, it's important to keep a cool head about it, and know that the copier will ultimately fail. :)

Thanks for sharing, Eric.
