ACK! BACKLINKS (not Zombies) Ate My Brains!
Okokokokok....
I know they tell me that "backlinks are dead;" that they are a thing of the past and that Google has banished them into the twisting ether.
However...
I keep running up against backlink walls when looking at my SEO score on Google Analytics and on SEO site testers (I always get penalized because I have no backlinks to my site, because everyone tells me they are worthless).
Moreover, while my site is indexed with Google, it has not yet been given a rating. One of the chief reasons? NOoooooo backlinks!
What gives?
So, are backlinks *really* a thing of the past, or are they reincarnated (gulp) things that we have to still think about?

I think they are still worth it if they are relevant, as Doug Hayman said. But a bunch of them hitting you all at once with other subjects. . . . nope.
I'm still putting them in wherever I can. The way I see it, anything that links back to my site can't hurt me!
If you run your site through SEO tester sites like http://nibbler.silktide.com and http://seositecheckup.com you'll see your score as well as what is going on with your site. Can also see backlinks on your Google Analytics page.
I've given up trying to figure it out... first keywords on the All-in-one SEO... then authorship... now backlinks... I just write what I write
I know, there is so much to figure out! I'm just concentrating on the lessons and hopefully things will get clearer as I progress. :)

Great question! I have been wondering the same thing myself. I recently read an AWESOME article about some great SEO strategies that you should check out. As far as backlinks go, I have been more or less letting things happen organically, as opposed to forcing them or risking any "tricks." I think they still serve some value, but perhaps not as much as they once did.
