What Have The Tailors In New Market In Kolkata India Got To Do With Affiliate Marketing?

Last August I wrote a post on my life's story website about Christmas in Calcutta, or Kolkata as that city in now called. Silly, I had forgotten to request site comments before the recent Christmas. I decided to request comments anyway, even though Christmas had passed.

One of my story's in this post was how as young boys, my brother and I were taken by out mother to visit the tailors in the New Market to have new suits sewed. One of the commentors asked me if this was still a custom there.

I didn't know the answer to that so I entered the following question in Google:

"Do parents in Kolkata still take their sons to the tailors in the new market to have suits made for them for Christmas?"

The following is a screenshot of the question and response by Google.

I was astounded to find that the article at the top of the list was my own! I also learned that many of the tailors that existed in the New Market when I was a kid are still in operation today. Perhaps that custom still continues today.

This website has only 4 articles published to date.

The facade in my cover photo is from New Market as available from the Wealthy Affiliate image library. It was built by the British when they ruled India and is still thriving today. I'm assuming this picture was taken during some form of rennovation.

Site Comments

I am happy to say that I requested three site comments and received three excellent responses.

My main goal with this website is to share interesting experiences of my life that I hope others will find interesting. Why so?

Would You Write About Events Like These Bellow?

I started learning Classical Piano in Calcutta in the 1950s and took exams by the Trinity College of Music, London that were held at the local Masonic Hall. From the ages of 7 to 12, I walked the streets of Calcutta and back for my piano lessons. A round trip of about four miles. See map below. After turning 12 my brother and I was dispatched to a boarding school in the Himalayan foothills.

My school life was like a Harry Potters experience before the author, J. K. Rowling was even born. It took two train rides, a ferry and finally a toy train up the mountain to get to school.

Our family emigrated to England in 1962 on a steamship called the RMS Strathmore. The voyage was from Bombay to Tilbury Docks located in the mouth of the Thames River. Traversing the Suez Canal was one of the many highlights.

I competed in the talent contest playing the piano and won first prize. Many years later I participated in a talent show on the Queen Mary 2, again pplaying the piano. That ocean liner was 6 times larger than the RMS Strathmore.

Note that the RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship. There was a time when mail was transported by sea.

I attended Liverpool University at the time the Beatles were in their prime. Penny Lane was released at the time I lived in Halls of Residence adjacent to Penny Lane.

After graduating, I went on an overland cultural expedition to India and back that took three months. 500 students from Universities all over the UK participated. The countries that intrigued me the most were Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan.

In Delhi we joined many performers from Universities in the UK and India to perform at a variety show in a packed 10,000 seat amphitheater. Guess what our Liverpool Contingent performed. Beatles songs! I sang and played guitar in our group.

We just happened to be camping on the campus of Zagreb University when the Lunar Landing and first Moonwalk took place. I watched that in the students' dorm on a B&W TV.

My first job in England involved developing LED displays in the 1970s that were tiny enough to record coded data on the edge of high speed reconnaissance film. Those were long before LEDs became ubiquitous like today. My career in LEDs and LCD's evolved from England to Canada and finally to the US. As part of my job I traveled all over the world. Foreign travel was in Business Class.

O. J. Simpson

On one of these trips from Munich to LA, I was upgraded to 1st Class on a Lufthansa Boeing 747 and was seated next to none other than the infamous OJ Simpson! This was after he was acquitted for the murders and before he was incarcerated for his Las Vegas misdeeds. I have his autograph on the Lufthansa First Class menu as a memento!

And there's more. Much more of unusual things that I have had the pleasure and displeasure to live through. I felt compelled to write these stories down just for the fun of it. And hopefully others will find them worth reading.

Some members of WA like Jeff Brown have suggested that I have enough material to write several books. I thought that blogging about these events would be a good start that could later morph into books.

How To Use Affiliate Marketing To Monetize Such A Blog

I have a few ideas on how to use affiliate marketing to monetize such a blog. The Travel Niche is one such area. This is so broad that I could narrow this down to say places to see. Tours to take. Different ways to explore the countries I lived in or visited.

If you have any suggestions please feel free to tell me. Although I have only written four posts to date I felt that I should not waste any more time to write these stories. Especially as our grandkids spent three weeks with us and I may not be around when they get older.

I have started a spreadsheet where I brainstormed a boat load of topics to cover. There is no shortage of material. Too much perhaps. Paring it down to essentials is going to be key.

My Challenge

My main website is the MMO one that promotes Wealthy Affiliate. My challenge will be to keep both of them moving in parallel. That is a good problem to have. What do you think?

Thanks for reading this post. I look forward to hearing your comments and questikons below.

Cheers!

Edwin

I love reading about your life and adventures! I think the stories will be very popular. I think as far as making money you would think about who your target audience is and what they might be needing. Publishing on Amazon is good too. I liked Create Space way better for print on demand but it still works on Amazon too. You could tie your stories into places to see and things to do in a particular area. Like a travel/history blog.

Hi Veronica,

Glad you liked this post. Thanks for your excellent advice. I will wait till I have more posts published on my website and then go full bore with eBook publishing. Thanks for the info on Create Space.

It’s time I check out the options on eBooks. That will be my next step.

Thanks for commenting.

Edwin

Create Space was absorbed back into Amazon and now it's called KDP. It's very easy to do an ebook or paperback copy. there. There are many other options too and I'm sure there are people here that will have great advice.

A great read Edwin. I used to work in India and I have every admiration and respect for that nation. They are so industrious and driven.
Keep the life story coming

Hi Dave,

So glad to learn that you used to work in India. That is one thing I’ve never done. I left while still in Grade School.

I watched some videos on the building and expansion of the underground Kolkata Metro. That project confirmed your conviction about being industrious driven.

Thanks for commenting.

Edwin

I look forward to reading more about your life!

Hi Rosana,

Wow! Edwin,

Thanks for sharing this biographical post. It reminds me of something you read in a National Geographic magazine. You've had such an incredible life.

You have a rich, cultural experience, phenomenal musical and educational background to boot, and the writing skills of an English professor.

What are you waiting for? You are a GSC, GA, SEO, WA person of interest.

Rachele

Hi Rachele,

You made me blush. One problem though. You can’t see it lol.

Thanks for your vote of confidence. I am going to go full bore with my writing.

Cheers!

Edwin

great, Edwin.

Thanks Anusuya.

Edwin

You have great stories well written about your past. It is not surprising that your blog ended up in number 1 position.
Thanks
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

As another member stated, what am I waiting for. I’m going full bore with my writing. I’m not going to worry about monetization until I have a boatload of posts written.

Thanks for commenting.

Edwin

Very wise.
Stephen

Hi Edwin…thank you for sharing your life journey. I like the idea of monetizing via a travel niche.

-Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your vote of confidence. I’ll aim for three posts a week. I’m going to delay the monetization bit until I have a few scores of articles written.

During that process I shall be researching affiliate programs tied to travel. Both normal as well as off the beaten track.

Cheers!

Edwin

Best of luck, Edwin!

-Mike
