An Unexpected Check In The Mail
WooHoo, I was surprised to receive a check for $341 in the mail today! The cover picture has something to do with it.
When I was looking for a picture, I entered the San Fernando Valley. Lo and behold, the Wealthy Affiliate image database had a pic. Without skipping a beat I grabbed it.
Who Would Want To Send Me Money?
In 2015 There was a pollution scandal caused by the Southern California Gas Co. Residents who lived nearby got badly sick. In addition, a terrible odor enveloped that residential area. A Class Action lawsuit was filed described below:
"In the class-action lawsuit, the Plaintiffs claim that the Defendants violated the law as a result of an October 23, 2015 incident related to a natural gas storage well at the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility and alleged impacts within five miles of the well."
The cover picture seems to have been taken not very far from Aliso Canyon. Serendipity!
Geographical Isolation Protected Us
Although our home is within that 5-mile radius as the crow flies, a major freeway intersection and the mountains shown below, isolated us from the effects of the pollution. Hence, nobody in our area got ill. Nor did we get any bad smells.
When we received the notice of the lawsuit several years ago, I didn't give that much thought. Frankly, I had forgotten about that incident.
Today we received the settlement checks. Not only me but my wife too? Our family was compensated in the amount of $682! Not bad.
Here is a sad thought. I wonder if those who got sick were able to get a higher level of compensation. Frankly, for them, $341 per person would be an insult.
If you ever get a notice about being a beneficiary of a class action lawsuit, stay on top of it. You never know when you may find money dropping into your lap unexpectedly.

Awesome, Edwin, though that was still a small price ot pay those who suffered the most. We must take our wins where they come from.

I did some research. Those who were directly affected had personal lawyers represent them. They got significantly higher settlement amounts because they had to leave their homes and get a lot of medical treatment. They decided not to disclose what they received.

Yes, I agree it would be an insult as compensation for getting an illness because of that pollution.

Yes, I just wish business and government would be more proactive in how they treat people and the environment before having to put band aids on a “stuffed up” project.

That shouldn't have happened in the first place. The people living close to have been seriously affected did get larger settlements commensurate to their suffering and inconvenience.

Hey Edwin, since I do not live far from you, literally off the 210 in Glendora, I remember this situation all too well.
Yes I am sure, it was nice to see the check, but as you said, the people who did develop major health issues due to that issue, I am praying they were compensated a lot more.

Great to hear from you. I believe that those who experienced health problems and had to leave their homes for a while because of the stink did receive compensation for all those specific situations. It took a long time to process their claims.
It's always awesome to receive unexpected money. I also received money a while back from a class-action lawsuit against Walmart.
